kitten_mittens_··on Esbuild – An extremely fast JavaScript bundler
For ESLint:

For TS, tsc has an —incremental flag. ts-fork-checker-plugin is non-blocking for the rest of the build too.

In browser JS can drop down to the old Promise callbacks (.then) to avoid coloring synchronous callers.
kitten_mittens_··on A web of trust for NPM
Once you get through unspecified dependencies of dependencies (and pnpifying tools), my last big hiccup with yarn 2 is that zipfs doesn’t work with vs code and typescript’s language server. So you can’t go to code or type definitions within zips.
kitten_mittens_··on A web of trust for NPM
Two of my last three jobs did NOT need to compile down to ES5. The current shop is supporting only ES2020 browsers.

Yarn 2’s Plug and Play has actually been a dream dep size wise. Once you get over the initial hurdles of setup, you can do things like vend your reps for zero installs. core-js alone (two major versions because @rjsf felt compelled to polyfill in a library) is 3K files worth of node_modules.
kitten_mittens_··on Tesla’s Nemesis in China Is a Tiny $5k Electric Car from GM
The common wisdom in a lot of the States is that car size is an arms race. If you drive a little car, you’re in more danger in an accident. 70% of auto sales last year were SUVs and trucks too.

The city I just left, Boise ID, had 80% of people driving to work alone in these suburbitanks.

kitten_mittens_··on Not an Amazon Problem
Honestly, housing anywhere in the American West. In Boise, the median house price has gone up 54% since 2015. 84% of the city is zoned for single family homes.

English word clusters like “Weapons of Mass Destruction” are similar to German. The way they’re written is different though. It is ‘mashed together.’

Once you get used to picking out German morphemes, it’s not hard to make things out.

kitten_mittens_··on Show HN: Should you buy a house and rent it out?
70% of Germans rent. Any increase in rents is broadly felt, especially compared to America, where most political power in most cities resides with homeowners (~63% of the population).

There is plenty of history in North America.

kitten_mittens_··on Bleve: Full-text search and indexing for Go
Our biggest pain point using bleve is umlaut handling (our documents are in German).

Other than that, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it fit into our static doc server that we shipped a binary around of.

kitten_mittens_··on The Secret Rules For Getting Hired
Germans pronouncing my American first name is the same way. It's a boring common Old Testament name. German has all the phonemes they need to say it too, even if the vowel is off a bit.

It's just something that happens, and I don't blame them for it after so long. I get the feeling that Anglicizing or Deutchifying names is universal.

kitten_mittens_··on Germany's car industry faces a perfect storm
European English for code. It's sufficiently different from American that it's sort of got its own rules at this point. It's difficult to understand sometimes.

Most docs at my >200 dev shop including contractors are in German though.

kitten_mittens_··on Future JavaScript: what is still missing?
> a class in most languages is just a group of related static functions.

In class oriented languages like C# and Java, sure. JS with ES modules has the alternative of using functions exported directly from a module.

The latter approach has the benefit of better tree shaking than the class based equivalent.

kitten_mittens_··on Why Design Thinking Works
Can you smoke in Dutch bars? One thing that I was horrified by in the Netherlands was people smoking right at entrances to buildings. In the US, you have to be 20 ft (~6 meters) from entrances when you smoke.
kitten_mittens_··on Why Design Thinking Works
> relegitimizing nicotine addiction

You should visit Europe where smoking doesn't have nearly the amount of stigmatization it does in America.

There are smoking rooms within my office in Germany, and the rooms smell like an American restaurant circa ‘95.

kitten_mittens_··on Why Use F#?
F# does not have HKT, and it shows in the compile times.

Hamburg checking in at 930 € furnished. 15 minutes from the city center. My salary is 3.200 a month after taxes. I have a blue card.
kitten_mittens_··on How Loneliness Is Tearing America Apart
I lived in the Northeast Megalopolis for a bit before moving to Germany.

In the eastern US, I didn’t know anyone prior to moving there for work. The city was very anonymous, to put it lightly. The only people talking to you on the street were homeless.

I’d go to meetups and flit around, but it was hard to put down roots where everyone was friends with their college buddies from MIT or Harvard. The school I went to in the West isn’t famous for anything other than football.

I moved to Germany figuring that I didn’t have much to lose, being deracinated and all. It’s strange how many more people try to talk to you on the street. Mostly drivers and older ladies asking for directions.

Since I don’t speak German, I’m very isolated now though. It’s easy to discount interactions with service workers at CVS or Whole Foods when you’re going through them, but I think that it’s the sort of foundational thing even loners like myself need.

kitten_mittens_··on Built to Burn
A lot of the interior West and SoCal where fires are the most intense is unforested. A good deal of the lumber used to build is shipped in from elsewhere.

My home state of Idaho (the south) is largely cheatgrass, tumbleweeds, and sagebrush. None of which are useful for construction. All extremely flammable most of the year.

Thanks for the reply! The Discord channel has been very helpful, but I must have missed this sort of thing there.
kitten_mittens_··on ReasonML: Strict, powerful and forgiving
Avoiding reason-cli and just using bs-platform and reason-vscode together is the way to go in this ecosystem.

The problem with reason-cli is that it can get out of sync with the bs-platform version and fail in unclear ways.

There was quite a bit of pushback against reason at my shop due to the interop between these two packages and trying to do things like have autocompletion fail because of them.

It’d be nice if the upgrade of bucklescript to the OCaml 4.6 drops soon too.

kitten_mittens_··on Even janitors have noncompetes now
Assuming you can read German. My German is horrid, but the German company I work for assured me contracts can only be in German.
