kitten_mittens_··on Lessons learned from the recent job hunt
I wonder what that looks like versus Purchasing Power Parity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)

My salary in Germany (€60K) and apartment in a not great neighborhood was €900 a month.

Here in the US, I pull $150K and spend ~3K a month on a studio. I think my standard of living in Germany (besides desperately missing air conditioning) was roughly the same.

I'm from the mountain west, and I'd say anti-California sentiment has been around my whole life (born right after the Wall fell). Even from my Appalachian migrant parents.

kitten_mittens_··on Gen Z does not dream of labor
That's where I was going, yeah.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=OBTh only has data for median house prices from 1963, and household income from the mid '80s. The spread growing isn't heartening.

I agree with the sentiment, but what was the median house price v. the average?

kitten_mittens_··on The Colorado Safety Stop is the law of the land
When I lived in Hamburg in Germany, there was an arterial on my way to work where cars definitely _did not_ stop for pedestrians. The street was 2 lanes wide with an spot to stand in the middle.

kitten_mittens_··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Pretty much. It'd get below freezing some days when it was clear and then snow. But that only happened a handful of times. I think Berlin is probably colder than Hamburg. Most of the Fall/Spring was 8C and raining in Hamburg.
kitten_mittens_··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Having lived in both Hamburg (55deg lat) and Seattle (46), I can say that northwest Europe daylight hours are _brutal_ in the winter.

The first winter I was in Hamburg, I think we got 10 hours of sun all of December.

kitten_mittens_··on Show HN: French Republican Calendar based on equinoxes
Makes sense.

I made a decimal time clock here https://github.com/wegry/decimal-time where I used `requestAnimationFrame`. Admittedly, it probably uses more CPU than it should.

I think I had an issue `setInterval` similar to https://stackoverflow.com/a/729943 talking about here

> In this Fiddle, you can clearly see that the timeout will fall behind, while the interval is almost all the time at almost 1 call/second (which the script is trying to do). If you change the speed variable at the top to something small like 20 (meaning it will try to run 50 times per second), the interval will never quite reach an average of 50 iterations per second.

kitten_mittens_··on Lawn mowing frequency affects bee abundance and diversity (2018)
How hot is it there and how much does it rain? I grew up in Idaho, where in the summer it'd get to 42-44C relatively regularly. And there was at most 200mm of precipitation a year. Most of the grass in my parents' neighborhood was Kentucky Bluegrass. Mowing the lawn weekly was something that happened to help a bit with water retention.

My dad always insisted on mowing every 4 days though.

kitten_mittens_··on Show HN: French Republican Calendar based on equinoxes
If the time portion of the view isn't using `requestAnimationFrame`, it probably should be. Otherwise deferring to `setInterval` sets a weird cadence for the time changing.

kitten_mittens_··on Boeing’s 737 Max Software Outsourced to $9-an-Hour Engineers (2019)
As an American, I think that arguments about outsourcing that boil down to ability being all over the map don't feel right. Plenty of American engineers are all over the map.

The biggest difference is distance, the time zone split, and cultural differences.

I say this as someone that thinks limiting insourcing raises wages in the short term.

kitten_mittens_··on Burgeoning bike cities emerge across America
Ah, yeah, I cross by that in my route from the West End to Seaport (I think it's Winter/Summer Street?). About as much paint as grade seperated spots and a share row on Cambridge St. is the fairest spot until you get to South Station.
kitten_mittens_··on Burgeoning bike cities emerge across America
It's definitely improved noticeably since '16, when I moved out here. Which Washington Street? I live by North Station, and biking to the Charles River Path is a little scary, but once you're on the path, it's pretty easy to get to most of Back Bay/Fenway without too much of the way shared with traffic. There are still big gaps, but the number of grade separated paths in the West/North End, at least is heartening.

Seaport could be much better if enforcement was there at intersections. I've tried to use 311 to report drivers sitting in their cars at them.

kitten_mittens_··on Can computers cope with human races? (1989)
Hispanic isn't a race according to the Census Bureau.

> The United States Census Bureau uses Hispanic or Latino to refer to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race

The way it's used in popular imagination is as a "race" though. My mom doesn't see Pope Francis as hispanic because he isn't mestizo.

kitten_mittens_··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
Cities in the US can be very steep too. I have a ~50 sq meter apartment that runs ~€3000 in Boston. When I lived in Germany, my salary was about half what it is here in the States. Taxes are much lower, my effective tax rate is closer to ~25% (state and local) than the 42% in Germany plus the 5% Soli.
kitten_mittens_··on What’s the Difference Between American English and British English?
My first introduction to Canadian English being slightly different than American was a physics professor my sophomore year who in the first lecture kept saying zed. I thought it was a tic.

Later I moved to Germany, I finally figured out that zed was a Commonwealth English thing from my Canadian coworkers. None of my German coworkers could understand me when I said zee, because it sounds like "c", I guess. So I'd say tset (the German zed equivalent).

kitten_mittens_··on Why can't we build nice neighborhoods anymore?
My 42sq m German apartment had concrete walls. So quiet. In Boston, I have stick walls, but the building is built in such a way it's not too bad.

I've lived in some very loud stick built buildings though. Americans seem to love to put multi family housing on 5 lane roads.
