I once happened to be with a coworker setting up VSCode on his new laptop. I was shocked by the reckless abandon with which he installed all kinds of third party extensions.

If all it takes is 3 smart motivated post-docs with no experience, then wouldn't the brain drain need to be 100% for it to be the reason?

I can't know for sure of course. But it seems reasonable to me to think that at least most of the dictators would want to have nukes to keep their hold on power. And there are many.

kirubakaran··on No Experience Necessary (2003)
How do you explain that most countries that want to become nuclear powers aren't able to do it?

He didn't go insane, but the doctors he challenged forcibly had him committed

> In 1865, János Balassa wrote a document referring Semmelweis to a mental institution. On 30 July, Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra lured him, under the pretense of visiting one of Hebra's "new Institutes", to a Viennese insane asylum located in Lazarettgasse. Semmelweis surmised what was happening and tried to leave. He was severely beaten by several guards, secured in a straitjacket, and confined to a darkened cell. Apart from the straitjacket, treatments at the mental institution included dousing with cold water and administering castor oil, a laxative. He died after two weeks

Do you think that means nothing?

I hear you. I just want to point out that the same thing was said about video games in the last generation, and about comic books a couple of generations before that.
kirubakaran··on Refund fraud schemes on TikTok, Telegram cost Amazon, other retailers billions
Every generation has been saying some form of this about the next generation. If there is "moral decay", you'd expect shoplifting to go up, for instance. The crime statistics don't seem to support that narrative.

kirubakaran··on Ask HN: How do you learn and research every day?
I built https://histre.com/ to help with this. We all go through the explore -> filter -> decide loop when researching online. There weren't any good tools to help with that, until now :)
kirubakaran··on How have you found purpose in your life?
I recently read "Four Thousand Weeks" and that book makes some great points on this subject: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54785515-four-thousand-w...

Another evergreen recommendation for this topic of course is: "Man's Search for Meaning" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4069.Man_s_Search_for_Me...

I agree, but that's not the case here though. Just SF the city, not "SF Bay Area", is the 17th largest city in the US! SF feels small, both in area and density.
