kirkarg··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
A model to predict medical equipment failure and predictive maintenance calendar based of a whole lot of data recompile from our own and clients cmms. Its fun, extremely time consuming, frustrating, but fun. It also provides to our clients with some interesting and useful information

kirkarg··on Ask HN: What brought back the joy of programming for you?
Usually the joy comes after I force myself to build a tool for specific purpose focus on me, and it works. Then if the tool can be scaled for more users, and their feedback is good (good criticism also) that I would consider it a plus.
kirkarg··on Surprise, your data warehouse can RAG
That would depend on what LLM are you using and the average tokens per answer. For example the average cost of the user query in my system is about 0.07 if you add 0.01 you are adding 15% per query (+-). Then, take into consideration how much value does RAG add to the answer Vs using other method.

Edit: typo in costs

kirkarg··on Ask HN: Should you include salary range on an international job post?
If the listing is for all countries this approach might not be the best, you need to consider that in some countries this data might not translate to the reality of it when it comes from a government source. I don't have a clear solution either
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
Poems for the lost, because I'm lost too. By exurbia.

Excellent book, some poems go very deep but most of them are just funny (at least for me).

kirkarg··on A Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet from Hell Slowed Williams' F1 Cars for Years
I our company we use a CMMS to keep track of medical devices and their parts with the corresponding sub parts and so on (much like a tree). Shouldn't a system like this help with the problem?
kirkarg··on A Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet from Hell Slowed Williams' F1 Cars for Years
And why not adopting a CMMS system? I'm missing something? Of course that you need to pay for it, monthly or one time payment, but they are made for this kind of job
kirkarg··on Ask HN: Does the Huberman hit piece change how you feel about his content?
It would be wise to not let a theory be affected by the people who preach it. A theory doesn't change because the person telling you about it doesn't have an exemplary lifestyle. Luckily for us, we are all humans and make mistakes
kirkarg··on Ask HN: Books that gave you different perspective on religion
An specific chapter on the "Wondering mind" from Isaac Asimov. Great book
kirkarg··on Chasing Passive Income, Americans Turn to Vending Machines
I wonder how much of a difference there is in the quality and reliability of Japan's machines and countries where is not common. I've worked at the Madrid airport in Spain and every single day we have a problem with this things and that would destroy the concept of "passive income". On the other hand, it's not that easy to find a good user interface, or at least to me.
kirkarg··on The new croissant taking Paris by storm
Besides the giant smoke bomb of a title, and that it looks like something my 4 years old niece could bake, it's a cool name.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: How often do you restart your computer?
Desktop computer: every 2 or 3 days. Sometimes weeks but it's odd. Work notebook: wednesday and friday. It might vary based on the things that I'm doing but I'm trying to close (and save) everything at the end of the day so I can turn it off.
kirkarg··on How to work 100 hours per week
This is a general advice for life improvement. I ve been doing all of that for at least 2 years( except quiting coffee), and it improved everything, not only work.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: 36 months of unemployment and depression. How to go back?
100% on this. Prioritize you health and you will see some huge changes. Plus, if it helps, try to see the "numbers" behind your situation, remove any abstract thoughts and try to find a logical approach
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Feb 2024)
Getting into Fuzzy algorithms because we need to normalice a 200k+ database of medical equipment of different suppliers. It's really fun actually, and right now I'm focusing on optimizing the speed of the overall app since I feel that it is the core problem right now.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: Are you using a GPT to prompt-engineer another GPT?
I'm not sure about web based service but with the API this is easily achievable by tinkering with the system message.
kirkarg··on "Sugar Alcohols Ruined My Health: Learn from My Mistakes" [video]
I never thought of that, and given that it was the average supermarket stevia, I think it's not even close to being natural.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: Have you made money from desktop apps? Please share what info you can.
Chatgpt API wrapper tailored for the company, all in vb.net. 7 months and counting. So far I'm very happy with it, but it is not a stable product because of the nature of the API
kirkarg··on Ask HN: Any way to write a simple desktop app anymore?
I've been using vb.net for a while. I love how easy and fast is for small projects.
kirkarg··on "Sugar Alcohols Ruined My Health: Learn from My Mistakes" [video]
Although Stevia is considered a replacement for many, it wasn't suitable for me. Quitting it helped reduce insulin spikes, which led to hormonal imbalances. This, in turn, resulted in low-level inflammation that primarily triggered pimples on my face. I can't provide scientific data to support this, but I systematically eliminated all sugar and artificial sweeteners, observing the effects of each over a 20-day period.

That said, I come from a family where sugar is deemed public enemy number one. We used to heavily rely on artificial sweeteners, which I believe led to my low tolerance after 20 years

kirkarg··on Did you compare the cost of using a GPT plus subscription and use GPT by API?
It's more expensive with out a doubt although I don't have the exact numbers, but there is also a huge advantage to it that is volumen of content that you can send and control over the system message. At the end, and this is only my case, I'm using both the premium for short problems and the API for more complex ones.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: If I buy a physical book why is the eBook not free?
Only once I needed the ebook of a huge book and when I contacted the author he sent me the download link. Awesome guy. Story aside, I believe is 100% greed from the publisher. The authors don't usually get a lot of profit from it and also the general profit of the book market is very low (or at least in Argentina and Spain)
kirkarg··on OpenAI: Increased errors across API and ChatGPT
I experience the same with the API, it simply ignored all system message. This things should be told beforehand clearly
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What Do Recruiters Do?
I understand, but consider most recruiters as individuals who may not fully grasp the company's actual needs. Their primary aim is to find a reason to hire you, and as long as you perform well, they get paid.

Another important aspect is building connections with people who share your mindset. This can be immensely helpful when seeking a job that aligns more closely with your values.

There is not a secret to this, keep on searching and don't loose your ethics values, some people will find that more valuable than your knowledge

kirkarg··on Ask HN: How do you balance stress, productivity and mindfulness?
What I've learned in the past years is: 1) don't focus too much on looking for a balance. Life has too many variables that can't be controlled. This pursuit will give you more headaches . 2) Instead, learn to adapt. You may have weeks of intense work, or life issues, or anything else. Learn to deal with that. Use the tools that you have. In my case is excercise, taking a walk, eat healthy , SLEEP. 3)Don't believe the bull** that you see on the internet about people finding inner peace or balance, that thing doesn't exist for prolonged periods of time. Hence, learning to adapt is the best thing to do.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What Do Recruiters Do?
The safe choice is to go directly to recruiters and contact them trough LinkedIn directly.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What Do Recruiters Do?
1) Tailor your CV vocabulary to the vocabulary used in the application. 2) LinkedIn: directly contact them (it sucks, but it helps)

Good luck in your search bro, is not easy to be in that position, don't let your guard down

kirkarg··on Ask HN: What is one thing that has improved your energy the most?
I would love to do this, my biggest fear is bowel movement, coffee is the trigger and I'm honestly afraid of leaving it because of this.
kirkarg··on Ask HN: What is one thing that has improved your energy the most?
Carnivore diet, it has stabilized my energy trough out the day. It sucked at first, specially since I have a bad history with sugars and carbs (lost over 55kg a few years ago). Also, try to find things you like to do, this is crucial. Moderate amount of excercise every day, nothing crazy but 60min a day followed with stretching.
