kinnth··on Why Web3?
A lot of them are happening right now. The most interesting thing about Web3 is just how much stuff is being built. Really innovative financial models, huge DAO that are beginning to work, NFT communities that actually help people.

It's happening right now, just join the discords.

kinnth··on Ask HN: Why have we accepted the cookie pop-up situation across the web?
I don't think most websites honestly care about personal data. What most sites want to know is what anonymous users are doing on their sites so they can improve them.

I for one need this data on a daily basis to help me decide how to make products better. I think the legislation doesn't do it's job properly. Why not force it so that like apple, the browser informs the websites that they don't want to be tracked, then it is the websites issue if they are caught tracking. Or all browsers forcibly obscure a users PII.

kinnth··on The Handwavy Technobabble Nothingburger of Crypto
Decentralisation offers the following value over centralisation:

* Control by a majority, not a minority. (democratic)

* Open ecosystem that visible and able to be analysed by anyone (transparent)

* Immutable (no one makes up assets without everyone knowing about it)

* Fair. Same price for everyone at all times, no chance of a monopoly.

Those don't exist in central systems and so the price you must pay for that is speed, scalability and anonymity (which is both used for good or bad). I don't believe crypto is the answer to everything, but I certainly don't see it as useless.

kinnth··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
I think whether it's the right or wrong decision is very personal. However, the worst case scenario of quitting with nothing to do is:

1. You have less money 2. You have less upto date skills (perhaps) 3. You will then need to get another job at a later point in time.

If you can budget correctly and you are a passionate learner, I only see 3 as the biggest issue. Even then perhaps that time off gives you perspective and you then get a job that fits you better.

kinnth··on Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards
100% I pay for almost everything on AMEX to get the points and use Monzo debit for the rest. Amazon has my amex linked and I use it for 100% of purchases.

Most people in the uk chase points and credit cards have much better points and bonus' than debits.

kinnth··on DownThemAll (2019)
The comments in this thread are a pleasure to read :)
kinnth··on Jack Dorsey mocks Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse plan, saying it's dystopian
I think people always think of the metaverse as a 3D space, whereas social networks are always thought of as more of a 2D space. That's how I think of it at least
kinnth··on DuckDuckGo as a TTY
I was about to say, the main issues with the DDG view is that it's all formatted in a single colour. One colour for links and one for titles is so much better on the eyes! This is a great project!
kinnth··on When someone mentions the BTC energy problem, point them here
I think when you look at it compared to the other systems (gold, banking) it is comparable for the amount of value that is moved.
kinnth··on Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days?
I found the MBP 16 Intel version to be the worst macbook they have made. Great screen, but everything else wasn't worth the money.

They also introduced a crazy bug which when you plug in a USBC charging cable you can twig the temperature sensor on the macbook sending the whole CPU to 100% and it was a software issue not a hardware issue. Still not fixed.

I intend to get the nex M1X for the simple reason that it will be better integrated with the mac's and OS. I don't love Apple, but I consider them to make the best laptop so i'll be excited to see what they release on monday.

kinnth··on Ask HN: Practically accepting cryptocurrency for businesses without middlemen?
The issue imo is the infastructure to tie the transaction to the purchase still needs to attach on chain data with offchain data and so that's complex for each chain and each website or app backend. Still recommend using a payment partner at this stage.
kinnth··on Ask HN: Practically accepting cryptocurrency for businesses without middlemen?
Moonpay.com works, it accepts about 100 different coins and handles the transacations and KYC (as all crypto transactions now need KYC)

However, it's fees are hefty something like $4 or 5% whichever it higher. So only makes sense if you sell things that cost $100 or more.

kinnth··on Launch HN: RescueTime (YC W08) – Redesigned for wellness, balance, remote work
I just logged back into your app (2615 days since you last saw me) haha!

I used to love this app, I used it a lot when I was studying and most recently I just needed a new app to help me focus. Working from home has led to me working more, but procrastinating more. I'm much less effective in the afternoons now and especially with Crypto I keep getting distracted. This update has come at the perfect time for me! I'll get back into it again and hopefully get my data back.

kinnth··on European Payments Initiative (EPI)
wow, thats hilarious how bad the fraud is then!
kinnth··on How I Experience Web Today
DuckDuckGo should add an ad / popup score to every article so that in the search results you could preview just how much crap you're expecting to see if you click. If there are no ads it could be a gold result or something :)
kinnth··on Ask HN: Updating to Big Sur on an Intel Mac, do you now get Kernel Panic issues
I'm blighted with it daily now. I can't connect my second screen and I even have issues on low battery when i connect to a normal charging cable.

It's made the mac unusable with anything connected.

kinnth··on Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup?
In the UK at least you should buy the Gigacube from Vodafone, it's unlimited wifi over 5g and it costs around £45 a month. You can power it off a battery and then it gives you local wifi connected to the 5g network.
kinnth··on Show HN: Thruhikes – A list of long distance hikes around the world
You definitely need to link to the map file or the open street map walk details on your site, the rest is great but as a user I want to be able to see an overview map of the trails.

It would also be easy for other users to contribute by uploading the map files and thus help every future user.

kinnth··on Cellmate: Male chastity gadget hack could lock users in
wait, how does that work!?
kinnth··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
China didn't ban them, they just asked them to play by Chinese Rules. I think it should be the same. Instead of Banning the US should setup what US rules they expect international companies to play by, as should the EU etc.
kinnth··on iOS14 reveals that TikTok may snoop clipboard contents every few keystrokes
Is it even clear whether this data is being sent back to Tiktok or any company or is it simply to check for activating keywords to add app functionality?

Is it all done locally?

kinnth··on The Dyson Battery Electric Vehicle
I'm not sure electric cars are as deep as motor driven cars and obviously Dyson had the manufacturing of electric motors down to a fine art. I am pretty gutted they couldn't get an economy of scale to make it work, even if they had sold 100 at 250k a pop I think it might have grown and they might have followed the tesla model from luxury down to affordability.
kinnth··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Siri on Apple watch is the biggest piece of shit i've ever used. The number of time it chirps up for no apparent reason and answers a irrelevant question happens daily.

Apple make nice stuff. They suck at big data.

kinnth··on Saving money on international payments as a remote freelancer
We've been doing this for 3 years and we sit within EUR, GBP and USD. Rather than doing immediate conversion I sit and wait for various rates to become profitable, im happy being in any of the 3 currencies and so usually oscillate between USD and GBP which has been very profitable in the last year making around 10% net over 3 transactions. Can highly recommend TransferWise.
kinnth··on N26 will be leaving the UK
That's a bang on description of N26. Well done.
kinnth··on Ask HN: Best book / resources on leadership, especially for tech teams?
This is a great thread!
kinnth··on Laser-Based Audio Injection Attacks on Voice-Controllable Systems [pdf]
Blew my mind!

I always felt all these assistants we're super creepy any way and I get a lot of things hooked up in my smart home but want to control everything via my phone, which I trust.

kinnth··on [dead]
The only choice is action at this stage. There has to be a global uprising that shocks and dislodges the current status quo.
kinnth··on Parasite SEO
This shit is what now fills up over half of my google searches with listicals and generally fake sites touting deals on any of my search terms.

What annoys me now is that copy catting a decent article and just filling it full of ad shit, ranks so well. :( gone are the days where googling for something felt good, it's now a web of sales tactics and copied texts.
