kinleyd··on Gpwgraph – PipeWire Graph Qt GUI Interface
Just stumbled across this a few days ago. Very pleased to have it in my pipewire audio stable. Linux audio is moving along very nicely!
kinleyd··on Accounting For Developers, Part I
Interesting. And Zig too? Hmm.
kinleyd··on Accounting For Developers, Part I
Sadly, I gave up accounting in high school after failing to reason through the meaning of 'credit' and 'debit' (Yes, I went in too deep!). My epiphany came in B-school when I tackled it again, when I finally figured out what your instructor summarized.
kinleyd··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
Hmm, that does not sound right.
kinleyd··on My New Sony NW-A55 Walkman
Rockbox was very cool. I used it for many years.
kinleyd··on Programming in the Apocalypse
Well said. I think if the vaccines hadn't come out at all, it could well have been as bad as the Spanish Flu.
kinleyd··on New links found between musical training and cognitive ability
Why? I'm interested to know.
kinleyd··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
Yes, I understand the requirements for EU/NATO membership and that Ukraine is a long way from there. I thought it was realistic given the circumstances: Ukraine is quite literally fighting for eastern Europe - including those countries that have already acceded to the EU. I can't see any other way to look at it given the facts that have already surfaced. While the EU and NATO waffle over the extent it is willing to risk engaging in this war, Ukraine is getting destroyed, but may yet do enough to set back Putin's designs by 30 or more years, if not permanently. I believe such an outcome should confer the deserved right to special treatment for Ukraine by both the EU and NATO. However, perhaps I am too romantic in this regard as even at this time I'm sensing stodginess on the part of the EU and NATO.
kinleyd··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
<Ukraine joining NATO is just not ever going to be allowed to happen.>

I believe a lot will depend on the outcome of this war as well as its ramifications for Putin's grip on power. Ukraine has so far defied all the odds and I wouldn't bet against them at this point. If given a bloody enough nose Russia may not be in a position to never allow NATO membership to happen.

kinleyd··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
Given what's already happened, and provided (I'm hoping) Ukraine continues to hold out as it has, both EU/NATO membership is looking very realistic and likely to occur in relatively quick order. I think settling for less would be illogical at this point.
kinleyd··on A “Sideways” supply response in California winegrapes
Ha ha, I do that too!
kinleyd··on A “Sideways” supply response in California winegrapes
Count me in among the flakes who went for Pinot Noir (and, um, still do) because of Sideways.
kinleyd··on PipeWire: A server for Linux audio and video streams
PipeWire is fantastic already, and I can't wait for it to take Linux audio to where it should and can be!

I've got my broken mess of a configuration for alsa, mpd, mpv, Firefox and pulseaudio all working again after a long, broken spell.

The only thing I haven't gotten working is the upmixing of channels for 5.1/7.1 audio channel movies on mpv. Currently I rely on my alsa upmixing setup in ~/.asoundrc but am looking forward to having that work with Pipewire alone, hopefully soon.

Yes, documentation for pipewire is sparse, and I'm surprised all/most links I see go to pipewire.org, which is where it is sparse. The useful one is here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/wikis/hom...

kinleyd··on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Is Associated with Low Testosterone Levels
No, that seems logical but as is usually the case, such logic is simplistic and likely to cause more complications. It is more important to identify the cause of low testosterone and address that. Then you get to return testosterone to normal or improved levels and have the knock on benefits, etc. that you mention.
kinleyd··on Eating sardines regularly helps prevent type 2 diabetes
You, sir/madam, have pointed out a most germane fact.
kinleyd··on Steve Finberg, W1GSL, SK
Thanks, I didn't know that. I find it very poignant.
kinleyd··on The Real Book
This was a great read!
kinleyd··on Kingdom: Sikkim’s merger with India
<Today the western democracy is existing by forceful takeover of independent kings and kingdoms, where minority rules through the tyranny of power and weapons.>

Is that so? Now I'm left wondering what world you are living in.

<If you read the history you will know that over 75% of population in Sikkim wanted self governance, India just helped through that transition and prevented minority to be ruled by force.>

Self governance, by India. How does one miss that? smh

kinleyd··on Kingdom: Sikkim’s merger with India
Interesting comment.

<Shows in great details Indira Gandhi was a real Ironlady>

Would you hail me as an 'Ironlady' if I were to overwhelm you by force?

<who brought Sikkim into democratic fold removing the monarchy>

What is this category of democracy that you extol? I find it ironical that you would label as a win for the spread of democracy the forceful takeover of an independent kingdom.

kinleyd··on Cognitect and Nubank will be sponsoring dozens of open source developers
It's a great development. I'm keen to see how it galvanizes the Clojure ecosystem in the years ahead.

I came to search HN to see if this had been posted yet. A link to Rich Hickey's post would be better, imo: https://cognitect.com/blog/2020/12/15/sponsoring-open-source...

kinleyd··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
I remember trying to set up a PVR and getting pretty far using mpv and at. The system worked as long as it was left on. rtcwake was the bridge that was too far: Upon waking, recording started but ACPI errors occurred soon after, culminating with ivtv reporting the encoder had died. I never got past that stage, but it was a worthy try - and I learned that some bugs ain't never going to be fixed. Edit: It was an Arch setup from about 5 years ago.
kinleyd··on Developing Wayland Color Management and High Dynamic Range
It's certainly in keeping with a fine tradition!

"This kernel is tainted by Nvidia." is another I remember, as of course that notable middle finger that was thrust skyward in similar context.

kinleyd··on Developing Wayland Color Management and High Dynamic Range
Having just emerged from an exploratory dive into Wayland, this thread popping up here is surely a sign from the gods. :)

It's been a good experience: Weston, sway and Wayland itself have such tiny foot prints while doing so much. I haven't tried qtwayland and some of the others mentioned and will give them a run out. I didn't have any problems on Arch but for some reason Weston wouldn't build on GuixSD which I am also exploring.

One fun part was having to use the flag --my-next-gpu-will-not-be-nvidia to invoke wayland against Nvidia drivers. It isn't supported and promptly crashes anyway. I was glad I had a Radeon gpu also installed, on which I continue a most satisfactory exploration.

kinleyd··on Tinnitus Treatment from Neuromod
Thank you. Just the news from that time was so shocking. I can't imagine being caught in the middle of it.
kinleyd··on The guy who discovered Jon Stewart and Bill Maher
Interesting. It's a high bar indeed but personally I find Trevor to match Jon both as comic and intellectual.
kinleyd··on The guy who discovered Jon Stewart and Bill Maher
And then Jon Stewart went on to discover Trevor Noah. It's a fine tradition we have here.
kinleyd··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Apple was the ultimate outlier in that respect. It would be great if someone could pull this off for Mozilla. The odds are slim, but one can hope.

Edit: Cal Peterson's article clearly shows how we got here. Such a shame.

kinleyd··on At 31, I have just weeks to live. Here's what I want to pass on
I have to stash this gem somewhere safe. Thanks.
kinleyd··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
Has pricing been indicated anywhere?

Edit: See https://www.inverse.com/innovation/spacex-starlink-heres-how... and https://www.zdnet.com/article/spacex-starlink-internet-prepa...

So about $80 pm. That's pretty good imo.

kinleyd··on Mozilla’s Uncertain Future
Quantum was just one of the milestones, albeit an important one. Servo continues to develop and pass on many more features to Firefox. Shutting it down is basically shutting the major pipeline of progress that has gotten so many of us excited over Mozilla in the past several years. The decision does not augur well for Firefox and Mozilla.
