kingofspain··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (July 2013)
SEEKING WORK - Remote

Web dev & design. I hear that's kind of a unicorn thing?!

Recruiter-style bullet points (assume 25+ years on all of these if HR asks):

* PHP (Codeigniter, Cake, Zend, Symfony, Laravel...)

* HTML 5, CSS 3

* Javascript (yes - and jQuery too!)

Also add in git/mercurial, responsive-ness, PS, AWS, API-a-plenty & I'm picking up AngularJS too.

Some of the things I've worked on: e-comerce x 1000, Wordpress, vehicle tracking, MRP/CRM/EMS/TLA, iOS apps... plus a load more.

My site: http://pitbot.net

Happy to discuss anything and talk through my previous work and whatnot.

I'm in the UK.

kingofspain··on Beware of these lame App Store techniques
Something similar happened to an app I built. The direct competitor in the web world (they had no app of their own) posted a 1-star review using his real name no less, mere hours after launch. This was followed shortly afterwards by 2 more with very similar wording. No luck in getting them removed and we just had to live with it, though it no doubt hurt a little that our first 3 reviews were all 'This is app is crap lol'.

All sounds good then! The timing works so this should my first HN meetup. Plus the booze inflation up north has reached such a point now where I no longer faint at the price of a pint in London.
kingofspain··on Hacker News London meetup, Wednesday 10th July
What's this like for total newbies to the meetup thing? Does everybody already know eachother? Would I be forced to endure some cruel hazing ritual involving VB6?!
kingofspain··on Ask HN: Good places for short coding term gigs?
Ah, I just came off a frustrating weekend of PPH! Should've mentioned that above. 2 different bids interested, both then tried pushing bid down and disappeared, re-listing at half the price later (re-listing 4 additional times in one case). It could get better but right now I'm not confident!

Design & development! Mobile & web! With gusto!

* PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascript in general

* iOS & Android (with Titanium but have used Phonegap in the past)

* Codeigniter, AngularJS, Titanium mobile dev for more specific recent stuff

* SEO, UX to various extents

* General design, PSD-to-HTML and whatnot

* Happy with git or mercurial

Just starting to put together a proper portfolio but you can see a bit of WIP on an iPhone app I've designed/developing here:

My somewhat ageing site:

I'm UK based though discounts available if you'd prefer to fly me out to somewhere nice (hmm!)

Web app dev (PHP), web design, iOS & Android app dev/design, HTML build and perhaps 8 other things.

Skillz:

* PHP (mainly Codeigniter in recent times)

* HTML / CSS (5/3 respectively if you want hotness, XHTML and RDFa also if you prefer)

* Javascript / jQuery

* Titanium or Phonegap mobile dev

* Nice SEO

* UI/UX to some extent

* Git / Mercurial

* Picking up AngularJS

Other stuff too numerous for a tidy post, but if it applies to the web I've probably had a go at it at some point. I've worked on everything from Wordpress blogs to big e-commerce sites (big being relative but think $1m+/month).

Also have a couple of new iOS/Android apps coming out shortly. I can see through an entire project from start to finish if required and have a lot of knowledge built up over time on what converts.

My site - in need of an update but here it is:

kingofspain··on Ask HN: Have you been receiving spam from the freelancer's thread?
I've had a couple over the past month and none that I can recall from earlier.
kingofspain··on Ask HN: What's the best cofounder finder sites?
I'm Manchester based myself so if you go the building route, I'd be interested in seeing it!

kingofspain··on Ask HN: Salary Increases Over Time
Very similar for me. I was doing a job I could easily have got £40k for, for £13.5k (I incredibly stupidly applied labelling myself as 'junior' because I only had 4 years experience back then). I never got a single pay rise, not even for inflation. Eventually I wised up and moved on. Up until I went freelance it was the only way I ever got an increase.

kingofspain··on Ask HN: GitHub vs Bitbucket
From personal experience, in 2 years on Bitbucket I can remember one unscheduled outage and that was only a few minutes IIRC. This from daily use at UK time.

And to echo xauronx, the new UI really is great and pretty much did for my Github envy.

kingofspain··on Handling the London Waterloo rush hour on Twitter
Heh, I recently moved from an area covered by SWT back up north to Northern Rail territory. My physical experience on NR is much worse though (2 carriages at rush hour after the previous train was cancelled?!) but I doubt anyone can beat SWT for crappy customer service.

kingofspain··on RBS IT cockup: This sort of thing can destroy a bank, normally
I'm with the Co-op and as far as banks go, it's the best I've dealt with so far. Once you memorise the couple of keys to skip straight to a human they pick up straight away and have always been helpful.

On the web though they are horrible. The site is awful and little more than a truncated list of recent transactions with the odd money transfer bit thrown in. I don't know what other banks are like but statements don't go back very far (especially if you have lots of small transactions like I do). They wanted to charge me £395 for statements covering September 2010.

However, they have never cut off my student account without warning a month before I finished (Halifax) or threw my parents out of their house over some fucking clause in the PPI (Natwest).

kingofspain··on Professional Starcraft Team releases documentary with pay-what-you-want model
And I don't watch half of them unless I'm bored and desperate for something, anything, to watch in a hotel room.

They could put up a quick blurb and a trailer. I'll spend a few minutes on a trailer for virtually anything. Especially for a 'pay what you want' movie. The fact that it's about a subject I've so far had no interest in is irrelevant if it looks like a decent film.

kingofspain··on Alan Turing's 100th Birthday - Mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, scientist
relief

A friend asked me this morning if I fancied the Turing event this evening in Manchester. I'm currently skint and a bit under the weather so I had to pass. Seeing the list of speakers I momentarily felt a lot more unwell until I realised that this wouldn't be the same event!

kingofspain··on Ask HN: What code editor do you use?
Netbeans
kingofspain··on Apple iOS6 Preview
Ooh, if this means that even a file upload limited to photos is available then that makes my life a million times easier.
kingofspain··on Dear Heroku: Quit blaming all of us when you fail. Do this instead…
An ex-boss accused me of hacking and embezzlement(!) when he discovered he was paying £10/month for DNS services a few years back. It was something in place from years before I even started!

He also flipped out over firewall issues on his new Macbook (the site is down and taken the internet with it!) and problems with his ISP (some weird adult filter).

Point is, some people expect a site to be a single atomic thing with no dependencies or connections between. Through anything "unusual" in there and confusion and chaos reigns. My ex-boss was somewhat extreme I admit, but I've experienced it to a lesser degree many many times.

kingofspain··on Indus Valley Civilization’s Collapse Explained
There was a decent BBC documentary from last month which covered the mechanism and the attempts to decipher it. On my phone now so this is the closest link I can find: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17989915 but you can get to it from there :)
kingofspain··on Ask HN: I need your help naming our science startup
I'm clearly not very good at this but scitraq.com is available, or rather more rubbishly so is verscion.com
kingofspain··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (June 2012)
I'm picking up Obj C but it's early stages yet. I'm also building a couple of things in Python but not to the level I'm comfortable risking someone else's project on it at the moment.

I do know a fair bit of C and spent 3 years in a Perl shop but tbh, I'd rather not go down that path right now :)
