kin··on Seven alien, Earth-sized planets found just 39 light years from Earth
Honestly, I wish there was an extension that could translate click bait phrases to non-click bait ones. It'd be hard to do w/o first reading the article though.
kin··on [dead]
That's kind of a click bait title. First of all, O'Reilly never made books, they just publish them. Second, they're not stopping, they're just no longer selling directly. These books are still available for purchase digitally and physically. The biggest thing is that they're no longer DRM-free.
kin··on Safari Should Display Favicons in Its Tabs
I agree for sure. At the very least have it as a preference. My bookmark bar consists of icons w/ no label. I treat Favicons more or less like I do iOS app icons.
kin··on Coco: Framework for enterprise blockchain networks
I was just going to say, verbally Coco = Cocoa. Not that it matters all too much since they're in different spaces, but they could have come up with a different name, especially when you don't even have to use a real word.
kin··on Atom 1.19 – Improved Responsiveness and Memory Usage
The improved responsiveness is absolutely noticeable for me. Great job and much appreciated!
kin··on Launch HN: Dropleaf (YC S17) – subscription service for indie PC games
I more or less agree. I feel as if Steam is starting to look like the Android app store. It's at the point where legit games have to worry about SEO. That being said I think it's really hard to define super simple games that deserve a place to be seen and played vs. super simple copies and exploits.
kin··on Launch HN: Dropleaf (YC S17) – subscription service for indie PC games
In your opinion do you think those games should be omitted entirely from Steam? Or, do you think platforms like Steam need to organize their storefronts better from their front pages?
kin··on The Nintendo Switch and Gadget Design
It's actually one of the most celebrated consoles by indie developers to date. I don't see anything walled about that at all.

What's the gimmick you're referring to? The motion controls? The handheld mode? The dock mode? The kickstand?

kin··on Tesla seeks to raise $1.5B to fund Model 3 production
It the fundraising really necessary or just a way to sort of overproduce in anticipation of high demand? As it is, they pretty much have that $1.5B in preorder money alone right? Unless, he's just somehow pouring extra money into SpaceX instead.
kin··on Elon Musk’s Tunnel Plan Isn’t as Crazy as SpaceX or Tesla
You don't have to be so mean about others referencing old news: http://www.scpr.org/news/2017/05/13/71818/elon-musk-digs-dee...
kin··on Elon Musk’s Tunnel Plan Isn’t as Crazy as SpaceX or Tesla
He's already recorded a video transporting a car-sled from LAX to Westwood in 5 minutes. That alone would solve a lot of my traffic woes.
kin··on Elon Musk’s Tunnel Plan Isn’t as Crazy as SpaceX or Tesla
This isn't a hyperloop. It's just a new alternative transit system to bypass LA traffic
kin··on Microsoft Paint to be killed off after 32 years
Paint is the one program I miss the most from Windows other than the Windows file explorer and window management. Paint clones don't seem to cut it. Preview doesn't cut it for me either. Everything else seems to offer a subset of Paint in a more complicated manner. I don't quite know how to explain it.

Is it possible to DL an executable of Paint and run it in Wine?

kin··on CoinDash’s ICO Website Has Been Hacked
Does Ethereum not have an escrow like Bitcoin where a 3rd party can confirm a transaction first?

But also, if it's really as easy as replacing some arbitrary address with another I'm surprised Coindash wasn't more careful.

kin··on Juicero Plans to Lower Prices and Cut 25% of Staff
Freshly pressed juice is sold at a pretty high markup and little stands and shops seem to make a hefty margin. They charge like $10 for 12oz. of freshly pressed fruit and veggies. So, there's a ton of upside in selling packets and I can see how they made believers out of early investors.

But wow did they go about it wrong, charging $699 for a machine that does a worse job than your bare hands!? Was there not one investor who did a technical due diligence? I'm so surprised.

kin··on Disneyland raised prices to shorten waits
Understand the fast pass system. There should be blogs online about it. Don't get fast passes for rides that are not worth getting it for. The main ones where fast passes "run out" are Radiator Springs, Guardians, Space Mountain, and Indiana Jones. Note that the two parks are under two different fast pass systems and if you stay at any of the Disney hotels, I believe you can request specific fast passes.

Try and get into the park first thing in the morning. As soon as you get in, bee line for a fast pass to one ride, and wait in line for another. Some rides such as Toy Story are not part of the fast pass system. While waiting in lines that are 1 hr+, have a friend to go across the park and get more fast passes while you wait. Also, the time window for these passes are not super strict. That being said some cast members can be particularly annoyingly strict. Good luck!

kin··on Disneyland raised prices to shorten waits
The results are posted further down the article. You're right though, title is most definitely click bait. The notion of raising prices for the sake of shorter wait times is barely an assumption.
kin··on Disneyland raised prices to shorten waits
This could definitely work if they changed how their annual passes worked. Right now, pass holders can come in whenever there is not a black out date, but Disney needs to first implement a system where days have to be booked in advance. Otherwise, first come first serve would unfairly block those traveling from out of town.
kin··on O’Reilly Media has stopped retailing books directly on its ecommerce store
The $399/yr doesn't make sense for a lot of people. It definitely is too high a price point for me as I only read 1 or 2 O'Reilly books a year at most. It's nice to have a copy lying around for reference years later.

On the flip side, I totally understand them going DRM-only for digital publishers. O'Reilly PDFs are way too easy to find for free with minimal Google-fu.

kin··on O’Reilly Media has stopped retailing books directly on its ecommerce store
Google Play store offers O'Reilly books DRM free in both PDF and ePub format.
kin··on O’Reilly Media has stopped retailing books directly on its ecommerce store
Amazon sells Kindle versions so there's DRM. But, Google Play store offers PDF and ePub versions of O'Reilly books.
kin··on O’Reilly Media has stopped retailing books directly on its ecommerce store
But you can still buy their digital copies elsewhere like on Amazon or eBooks or Google Play.
kin··on Facebook Hits 2 Billion Users
Say what you will about Facebook but I can't deny that I use their products to connect with others. Facebook messenger and groups along with Facebook events has been a part of my life in better ways than AIM, Hangouts, or BBM ever was.

Congratulations to them for hitting 2 billion.

kin··on Amazon Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and return clothes free
> “Buy more and get a discount which increases, within some range, based on quantiry”

What amazon is doing is not the same as this quote. This isn't buying in bulk. This is more kin to B&M retail shopping where you don't have to pay any upfront costs to try on an article of clothing and assess fit. Only now, it's in the comfort of your own home.

The discount would be icing on the cake, but in the realm of fashion, 10-20% off is game changer.

kin··on Amazon Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and return clothes free
Sure, discounts for buying more is nothing new, but no upfront costs? No place does that at Amazon's scale.
kin··on Amazon Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and return clothes free
But the game changer is the 10-20% off your purchase. That's a pretty big deal. Not only that, but no upfront costs.

Amazon already had free shipping and returns before for Prime users. This however is a completely different psychology to online shopping.

kin··on Amazon Prime Wardrobe lets you try on and return clothes free
No upfront costs and 10-20% off is a pretty hefty discount.
kin··on Losing My Patience with Google+
I was under the impression that the plus movement died a while ago internally at Google. They had an initiative to switch all of the user ids to plus ids and have everything revolve around your plus account.
kin··on Uber finds one allegedly stolen Waymo file on an employee’s personal device
Nope, it's just between Waymo and Uber at the moment, and it's just a civil case at the moment.

Levandowski however has criminal lawyers here because the judge's court order for documentation may bring up something that makes Levandowski a criminal, whatever it is.

kin··on ESPN Has Seen the Future of TV
I've cut the cord and subscribe to ESPN through Sling. I'm very happy that ESPN has readily made themselves available on all the different streaming services (PS Vue, Youtube TV, Sling, etc). However, I also pay for Hulu and Netflix. In the end it still comes out to be the same price as cable, but with a more friendly subscription model.

Time Warner tried giving me a free year of basic cable and each month all of the random fees and surcharges were placed on me. Bills weren't predictable. All of a sudden the price would change 1 month and they have every right to do so. So yeah, I'm never trying that experiment again.

In the end, as long as ESPN has games to broadcast, they will no doubt have viewers and subscribers. Aside from that? People unsubscribe to ESPN either because they never wanted it to begin with OR because they honestly lack programming. Football has Sunday Ticket and Basketball has NBA GameTime.

Outside of live sports, IMO Scott Van Pelt is the last great sports commentator on ESPN and everyone else on the show (Stephen A Smith, Skip Bayless) and other people I don't care to remember the name of, sucks. The commentating and the topics they discuss are now more reality TV than it is about sports. Why did Kaepernick kneeling get so much airtime? Are they same demographic of people who watch sports on ESPN the same who would care? I felt like any coverage of that should have been on Bravo or E.

Also Bill Walton's coverage of NCAA Basketball seriously makes me want to shut the damn game off.
