kieranmaine··on First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
This article also provides good analysis: https://powerstack.currence.ai/p/powerstack-post-ipo-fervo-c....

The tldr

> If we look at our Fastest MW analysis, the fastest way to get power to the grid right now is solar+BESS with existing interconnection agreements in ERCOT. This setup gives a 27-month or less time-to-COD, and can come in at $40/MWh PPAs, a price and speed Fervo can't catch. So, per the above, the right way to think about it is that Fervo competes for a different customer than the ones looking at solar+BESS. Are they required to procure geo? Are they in the West? Do they need fully baseload power? For sure, that’s a smaller niche. But if Fervo's anticipated 38GW resource base materializes even a little, the niche is huge.

kieranmaine··on Greenvolt begins building 600 MW/2.4 GWh BESS in Poland
The UK has some mammooth projects in the pipeline as part of the Long Duration Energy Storage Cap-and-Floor scheme [1].

There's a 200MW/3,600MWh project which has planning permission and also a 400MW/7,200MWh proposal [2].

kieranmaine··on Greenvolt begins building 600 MW/2.4 GWh BESS in Poland
This source has some useful stats on duration: https://seia.org/research-resources/energy-storage-market-ou...

> In Q2 2026, battery energy stationary storage (BESS) installations reached 20.2 GWh

> total module manufacturing capacity to over 100 GWh.

> Storage Deployed in 2025: 57.6 GWh

kieranmaine··on Greenvolt begins building 600 MW/2.4 GWh BESS in Poland
> What's a "GW of battery storage capacity"?

This is the maximum amount of power it can dispatch. I think they use it intentionally so they can compare it to other generation sources.

For example this spreadsheet [1], with data for 2023, contains figures for "power capacity megawatts" and "energy capacity megawatthours".

kieranmaine··on Greenvolt begins building 600 MW/2.4 GWh BESS in Poland
The BESS market is doing OK in the US. Politicians will come and go but the fundamentals of BESS are solid, so I don't see why the installed base won't keep increasing in the US.

Battery storage capacity averaged 70% growth over the last three years - https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=67925

> During the first six months of 2026, operators added another 8.3 GW of battery storage capacity, reaching nearly 52 GW of nameplate battery storage capacity

kieranmaine··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
Agreed. I read the title as they would start using my data for training and I couldn't opt-out. After looking at the page and checking my app (I have Pro subscription) it seems like I can opt-out and my initial opt-out when I subscribed was preserved.
kieranmaine··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
How so? I've opted out of using my data for training.
kieranmaine··on Swiss parliament lifts ban on new nuclear power plants
For UK specific electricity costs I'd recommend looking at https://www.electricitybills.uk/

The UK is a grid that is adding lots of renewables and building some nuclear plants, so the site provides good data around the costs for the added transmission, storage and subsidies (for both renewables and nuclear) needed for a renewables heavy grid supplemented with nuclear.

kieranmaine··on Wind and solar generated more power than gas globally in April 2026
My earlier comment was too ambiguous. Those that spend money on generating capacity in the US get it.

> As of April 1, 2026, renewable energy’s share of total US utility-scale (>1 MW) generating capacity was 33.6%. EIA projects this to grow to 36.6% by March 31, 2027. Utility-scale solar will add 42,626.1 MW, expanding its share from 12.8% to 15.7%, while wind will grow by 14,157.4 MW (including 4,155.0 MW of offshore wind), increasing from 13.0% to 13.6%. The mix of other renewables (hydropower, biomass, and geothermal) will add 297.1 MW.

> The capacity of battery storage was 42 GW at the end of 2025 and is expected to double and reach 85 GW by the end of 2027.

In terms of the general population or politicians, some more than others. This is also with an administration that is irrationally hostile to renewables.

kieranmaine··on I was recently diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis
Quercitin + Bromelain has also helped my nasal polyps. The biggest improvement has been my ability to breath at night through my nose which has really improved my sleep.

Copilot recommended these supplements. Due to a lack of studies relating directly to the effect of these supplements on nasal polyps, it inferred they might help based on the known action of the supplements and the theorised cause of polyps, so it could all be nonsense. That said, both those supplements are considered safe at the doses I take and it appears to help, so even if it is a placebo effect I'm happy.

kieranmaine··on Wind and solar generated more power than gas globally in April 2026
The USA get's it. Trump doesn't. Texas is a the leader in wind and solar in the US.

kieranmaine··on Waymo pauses Atlanta service as its robotaxis keep driving into floods
> Alternatively, just don't run Waymo operations during flood/flash flood warnings.

FTA

> the company said that it shipped an update to its fleet that placed “restrictions at times and in locations where there is an elevated risk of encountering a flooded, higher-speed roadway,”

> But even those precautions apparently were not enough to stop the Waymo robotaxi from entering the flooded intersection in Atlanta. Waymo told TechCrunch on Thursday that the storm in Atlanta produced so much rainfall that flooding was happening before the National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning, watch, or advisory.

kieranmaine··on Iran war sparks renewables boom as Europeans rush to buy solar, heat pumps, EVs
I'd argue it already is. Only 7% of electricity generating capacity being added in 2026 will be natural gas.

> Solar power makes up 51% of the planned 2026 capacity additions, followed by battery storage at 28% and wind at 14%.

kieranmaine··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
I think in this case it's because LDES can't compete in the UK energy market, but it's a capability that needs to be developed, so this scheme address that by providing a guaranteed revenue.

The floor is a minimum revenue guarantee, to protect investors at times when the wholesale price is low and the cap is a maximum revenue limit to protect consumers when the wholesasle price is high.

It seems like these limits haven't been set yet, so I don't know what the potential impacts on energy prices will be.

kieranmaine··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
Regarding long term storage keep an eye on the UK's Cap and Floor scheme which offers guaranteed revenues to long term storage technologies [1].

Page 7 of https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2025-09/LDES%20... lists the technology types of the project applications. The majority are Li-Ion BESS, but there are also other battery chemistries and Liquid/Compress Air Storage

Battery revenues are shifting away from stabilisation now from https://cn-cob.com/info-detail/2026-uk-energy-storage-market...:

> the focus of energy storage has shifted from frequency services to energy arbitrage. Due to market saturation, the share of frequency services in the revenue stack has significantly declined, from 80% in 2022 to just 20% in 2024. Looking ahead to 2030, we expect energy arbitrage to dominate the revenue stack, with most revenue coming from participation in the balancing mechanism.

EV smart charging is a solved problem in the UK IMO, at least for those with a parking space.

OVO[1] and Octopus[2] offer smart charging tariffs that give EV owners reduced electricity rates.

The usual caveat is you can only benefit if you can install a charger and park near that charger. Still, based on this 2021 article [3] 65% of UK homes have at least one off street space, so the potential for a majority of homes to smart charge is there.

To extend the benefit of cheap smart charging to more people, it would be good to see legislation that makes it easier for leaseholders and renters to require the installation of a smart charger where technically possible.

Regarding the affect of EV adoption on electricity consumption the site https://robbieandrew.github.io/EV/ has some interesting data. I'd recommend looking at the following graphs:

* Distance travelled by passenger cars in Norway

* EV electricity consumption and total power generation in Norway

EVs now make up approximately 1/3 of miles travelled, but the increase in total electrcity consumption is fairly small.
