ki85squared··on You probably don't need query builders
The most sensible and pragmatic advice in this thread.

I am comparing it to the low cost alternative.
ki85squared··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
Can't say I understand how $10/month is expensive.

Quality search results ultimately save time digging through poor quality search results. Add up 300+ searches per month and surely you're hitting minimum wage value at least.

The value proposition is absolutely there at $10.

ki85squared··on ChatGPT Search
FWIW, ChatGPT Search didn't surface the video either with that query

> Based on the elements you’ve described—eyes, a pineapple, a bucket of water, a house of cards, chess, and a time loop—it’s challenging to identify a single music video that encompasses all these features.

ki85squared··on Why Should I Care What Color the Bikeshed Is? (1999)
Keen to read the original thread referenced in the email, but I can't find it anywhere.

Thank you. Your writeup helped make it click!
ki85squared··on 1Password rolling out “privacy-preserving” telemetry system
Thank you. Parent clearly didn't read the details. And wtf is with their claim of "exfiltration" when it's opt-in and you're already explicitly entrusting 1Password with your data? smh...
ki85squared··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
Thank you for this. How much of an impact is this having 1+ years on? I'm sure it's still substantial but wanted to ask if you had any current data.

> you must admit that this campaign against KF is coordinated and that you can't expect either side to be completely honest

Stating the obvious. Coordination is a prerequisite for any campaign/change movement, and no one is perfect.

But on coordination: I began advocating against CF after listening to @lizthegrey [1], a leader of the campaign, lay out the evidence of harassment - not exclusive to keffals - going back years [2]. (I mildly trust keffals by proxy, but I too am unsure of her history.)

My involvement of message amplification was purely voluntary and I received zero direction from anyone. The new friends I made along the way seem to be in the same boat. This was organic political discourse over an issue that finally came to a head.

ki85squared··on “Shit Academics Say” Twitter account hacked, Twitter Support refusing help
The account was hacked, not suspended. The spammy NFT Tweets are what the owner is looking to take down. https://twitter.com/Adidas_Web3/status/1548084214486118402
ki85squared··on I Write Letters to CEOs (2018)
Sonos publishes an email address for contacting CEO Patrick Spence "directly." [1]

I wrote an email drawing attention to a clunky process for reactivating a subscription to Sonos Radio HD that was cancelled because the credit card had been closed. (Forced to call in and speak to someone, couldn't reactivate it online.)

Sonos did revamp that process so you could reactivate a subscription online, but I never received a reply. I still like to think the few minutes I invested in writing that email saved many others dozens of minutes on hold with support.

I feel you.

It's so tempting to reject practically every large company because of their missteps, but time heals all wounds.

ki85squared··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
Zucker's decision to axe CNN Airport was yet another bluster on his part. It was used not only for live CNN and HLN but it syndicated content from Turner's other networks like Cartoon Network and TBS. His decision kept Discovery from adding its content to the rotation.

Zucker rationalized the decision by blaming streaming services and other mobile media but I don't buy that because Airport was still invasive - i.e., people look up from their devices and could still be seeing CNN, etc. today. And, from a business perspective, it required very few internal technical resources (a single master control system and operator) so the costs were almost certainly exclusive to whatever fees CNN paid to airports to install their receivers and displays.

(Full disclosure: I'm a former operations-level CNN employee, half speculating from my time at CNN WHQ)

ki85squared··on Show HN: Make your PDF look scanned in browser
Thanks for this tip! Preview has evolved so many little features the name is borderline misleading at this point.
ki85squared··on Psychedelics and mental illness
Parent used the term mushroom, but the article does not.

It's correct that the fungus does not contain LSD the chemical, but it does contain lysergic acid which is colloquially LSD the drug. For a short, layman-targeted article I'm inclined to give the US Forest Service a pass on this one.

ki85squared··on Deno Is Webby
There is zero practical downside to using `const` whenever possible, and my (Fortune 100) team's backend has been using a NoSQL database for years which has saved us an absolute ton in hosting costs. Hardly a "debacle."

Our solution is the right way to do things... for ourselves. Sorry that it upsets you.

ki85squared··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
Interestingly, this article [1] mentions a 2008 YouTube outage caused by a BGP misconfig during an attempt to ban YouTube in Pakistan. Included is a screenshot similar to what we've seeing with this outage. Possibly related?

ki85squared··on YouTube Go: YouTube reimagined for the next generation of YouTube viewers
While I agree, renting access often comes with the trade-off of losing control of your content. Netflix's content licensing agreements are finite, and your favorite movie or show could be gone next week. When you own the files, you own them for however long you desire.

Maybe on paper, but the FEC makes it easy to get on that list without any proof of identity. There are tons of joke candidates, like Crawfish Crawfish.
