khrbrt··on Stop irreversible damage to the Amazon
And Mossy Earth: https://www.mossy.earth/

I'm a big fan of their YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@MossyEarth for well produced videos on their various restoration projects across Europe. Very inspiring for things I'd love to start where I live.

We need to reform zoning to reduce suburban and exurban sprawl and there is no shortage of disturbed land that needs to be rehabilitated.

khrbrt··on The New Super Commute
Maybe it wasn't as bad as last year, but it snowed in Dallas last month and still shut down the city for a week.
khrbrt··on Music Programming for Java and JVM Languages
Very cool! Thanks
khrbrt··on Music Programming for Java and JVM Languages
Very neat. The first thing that comes to mind is combining this with Processing. I'd like to try making some kind of interactive generative art + music toy.
khrbrt··on Ask HN: Grants that ACTUALLY pay you to pursue your passion?
Matthew Lesko (the FREE MONEY FROM THE GOVT guy with the ? suit) is very active on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/@MatthewLesko

Maybe there's something in his recent videos that can help? He also does streams with live QA sessions.

khrbrt··on ‘We’re Robbing Fucking Idiots’: Twitter Influencers Laughed While Pumping Stocks
Glad the SEC and DoJ are cracking down on this scum but when are they going after Elon Musk for blatant stock manipulation via tweets?
khrbrt··on Jakarta EE 10
Quarkus uses the Eclipse Microprofile API, a subset of Jakarkta EE API optimized for microservices. It uses Smallrye for the implementation of the API.
khrbrt··on For centuries, English bakers’ biggest customers were horses
> Was it ever, in history?

Mayan city states were limited in size to how far warriors and their servants could march carrying their own food. No pack animals.

khrbrt··on We’re mostly living better than our parents
Those charts praising truck and SUV sales should be juxtaposed with charts showing the increase in road fatalities for cyclists and pedestrians or the rise in CO2 concentration and average temperatures.
khrbrt··on Ask HN: Books like “Crafting interpreters” or “The ray tracer challenge”?
Seconding this book. The section on closures helped me solve a tricky parsing problem for a research project.
khrbrt··on The long strange trip to Java (1996)
What would take the place for something like this today? Meetups?
khrbrt··on CIA Implant: Green Lambert for OS X
This is news to me. Do you know of a good article that summarizes Vault 7?
khrbrt··on “Does induced demand apply to bike lanes?” and other questions
It increases the number of people getting treated for their sickness, who otherwise would not be.
khrbrt··on California becomes first state to pass a guaranteed income plan
> “Guaranteed income doesn’t provide the job training and skills needed for upward mobility.”

To contrary, it pays for rent and food and the fees needed for job training and higher education. Without it, young people leaving foster care need to take the most immediate minimum wage job they can find to survive. And with the high cost of living in CA, it's difficult to invest the money and time to get something better.

If the GOP is serious about job training for upward mobility, they should be pushing for bills to make such training free and with enough of a stipend to pay for rent, food, and transportation.

khrbrt··on Apple Has a Growing Homeless Encampment on Its Property
Then make room for 5000 in every city, and do it with a federal program so individual cities don't have the incentive to cut back on it. Homelessness is a national problem and demands a national solution. The federal government has no problem creating trillions of dollars to prop up the financial system and fight endless wars. It can spare a few billion to get people off the streets and under roofs.
khrbrt··on Steam required additional 57.51 GB download for a review
Nice. I've been thinking of switching to the KDE spin. My bad experience is with dnfdragora that comes with the default Gnome and XFCE spins.
khrbrt··on Steam required additional 57.51 GB download for a review
It's broader than that. Fedora's package manager, dnf, is quick and snappy but it's GUI counterpart is sluggish and always hangs mid update.
khrbrt··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
Density brings in more tax revenue to pay for expanding the sewers and can support more mass transit to reduce traffic -- no street widening needed.

In many cities, it's the poorer denser neighborhoods that subsidize the more affluent less dense neighborhoods.

khrbrt··on Show HN: Baldur's Gate 2 online demo reimplemented in WASM
For me it froze when selecting "Custom" on the character image. Firefox 88.0.1 on Lenovo T480s running Fedora.
khrbrt··on Django 3.2 – News on compressed fixtures and fixtures compression
I've never used Django, but is it really that much easier to manage than a modern Java framework like SpringBoot or Quarkus? It's pretty fast to throw up a REST endpoint, and annotations have replaced much of the old boilerplate.
khrbrt··on On the Decline of Perl – external factors
That's very interesting. I thought it was odd that so many writing systems for indigenous languages[0] use invented alphabets instead of adapting Latin letters but this makes total sense when the written form is a source of pride and identity.

khrbrt··on The Era of the Wood Skyscraper Is Arriving
Was it balloon timbered with plywood walls? I've seen those popping up quickly, and they look very flammable, with thin support frames and walls, and a high surface area to volume ratio.

The wooden building in this article looks different, with much thicker wooden posts and flooring. The article said a test structure lasted four hours at 1000C temperature flames.

khrbrt··on Akira Kurosawa’s List of His 100 Favorite Movies (2015)
I've been surprised how many (copywrited) old movies I can find on YouTube. Individuals upload whole movies in lower resolutions and YouTube Movies itself has full length films in 720p and 1080p, many free with (easily blocked) ads.

You can also find full length public domain movies on archive.org.

khrbrt··on Student passes 3 classes in 4 years, ranks near top half of class with 0.13 GPA
Way off topic for a discussion about schools, but your comment reminds and enrages me about Abu Graib and how they court marshaled a few low level enlisted soldiers and nothing happened to the colonels, generals, and high level DoD officials who were responsible for, and well aware of, the conditions at that prison.
khrbrt··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
Being fired or resigning in disgrace.

If my bad advice cost thousands of lives, I would at least retire from public life.

khrbrt··on Ask HN: Who is working on fully decentralized social networking?
Something Awful solved this problem twenty years ago by charging a small fee ($5) to register an account. "Banned" users could re-activate their account by paying the fee again. "Permabanned" users would have to jump through more steps like different email addresses and payment methods. This upped the investment required for casual toxic trolling.

But this was for an old school "centralized" forum. Not sure what "paying for an account" would entail for a decentralized network.

khrbrt··on What’s Entering Public Domain in 2021: The Great Gatsby, Music by Duke Ellington
A benefit if it being in public domain is a variety of new editions to teach from.

Cheap paperbacks containing just the story and which cost just above the cost of its paper and ink. Slightly fancier versions with introductions by literary scholars. Thick annotated editions with every allusion and reference explained with lengthy footnotes.

khrbrt··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
Agreed. This will only make clickbait and sensationalism worse, and starve boring but vital reporting on local government.
khrbrt··on It's a Wonderful Life
How did It's a Wonderful Life fall into the public domain when so many other movies of that era haven't? I often wonder how many other buried gems we're missing out on.
khrbrt··on Ask HN: How to effectively communicate results of my work to non-engineers?
It seems to me that they were looking for any excuse to cut OP out of any equity to keep more for themselves.
