kharms··on How did we create a society where we can’t afford to live in our own country?
Most immigrants I know, including myself, get sent "shopping lists" by our families abroad because the US is a notoriously cheap place to be a consumer. Especially compared to poor countries.

kharms··on Wolf Puppies Are Adorable, Then Comes the Call of the Wild
http://www.radiolab.org/story/91696-new-nice/

This episode of radiolab goes into some theories about the process of fox domestication and hypothesizes that something similar might have occurred in humans.

I don't remember it in enough detail to summarize, but it's a fascinating listen.

kharms··on Israel Hacked Kaspersky, Then Tipped NSA Its Tools Had Been Breached
I read that in the WSJ article that first revealed the security breach.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/russian-hackers-stole-nsa-data-...

>The hackers appear to have targeted the contractor after identifying the files through the contractor’s use of a popular antivirus software made by Russia-based Kaspersky Lab, these people said.

kharms··on Israel Hacked Kaspersky, Then Tipped NSA Its Tools Had Been Breached
"Everything else is speculation" ignores the well sourced "speculation" about Kaspersky's next step: letting the FSB know about this contractor so they could target and breach his machine.

It's speculative in the sense that we weren't there, but the information comes from the same source as all of those facts.

Good to know! :)
kharms··on I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise
Car insurance is also a mandate. It works well. The healthcare situation isn't because it's a mandate, it's because of inelastic demand. A situation that's not comparable to gun ownership.
kharms··on I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise
>That would just be a way to make people who are young, not white, live in higher crime areas, etc, etc pay more.

Except for the racial discrimination that all sounds reasonable, and racial discrimination is avoidable[0]. Car insurance costs more depending on where you live, what kind of car you have, your age, your education, your driving history, etc. I recently looked into getting a car and decided against it because cost of parking + insurance + depreciation was greater than renting every other weekend. I don't believe driving is less essential a right than gun ownership.

> Shooting something/someone you shouldn't be shooting is incredibly rare

A large portion of violent crime is committed with stolen weapons.[1] I believe the original owner should be liable if the weapon wasn't properly secured.

From the OP: "Two-thirds of gun deaths in the United States every year are suicides. Almost no proposed restriction would make it meaningfully harder for people with guns on hand to use them." Key phrase - guns on hand. Guns are a highly effective and impulse-friendly suicide method.

"Various studies of survivors of suicide have calculated that as many as two-thirds of those who reported suicidal behavior did not plan their attempt...About half of those did so within 20 minutes, and three-quarters of suicide attempts occurred within an hour."[2]

Also from OP: "And the last notable group of similar deaths was the 1,700 women murdered per year, usually as the result of domestic violence." A world where a woman is beaten instead of shot because there isn't a gun in the house, or the gun isn't easily accessible is a world where that woman survives and can seek help. It's not a good world, but it's better.

Imagine a gun safe that opens one hour after you put in the code. Still accessible for deliberate action, while drastically reducing the cost of impulsive violence.

P.S. The racial discrimination link is a good read, check it out.

kharms··on I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise
I don't think the title represents the content very well. "Gun control" is a rather broad topic and her research is clearly narrowly focused on item-specific sales restrictions.

Personally I'm a proponent of mandatory gun insurance and owner liability. This would align incentives to reduce gun violence: safe storage, less lethal rounds & weapons, mental health checks, trainings, age-tied pricing, etc.

It won't stop all gun violence, but nothing short of a constitutional amendment can even get us close to stopping all gun violence.

kharms··on Apple does right by users and advertisers are displeased
>We should keep in sight what's the goal of targeted advertising - is to deliver relevant a message to the right users.

No, the goal is to make more money. Relevant is a sometimes side effect. The "right users" might also be the ones that are drunk, or emotionally vulnerable, or just got paid, or won at blackjack, or etc.

kharms··on Most Female and Male Occupations Since 1950
Interesting. One of the theories I've heard regarding a possible decline in educational quality in the US was that in the 50s, the most qualified women became educators due to a lack of other jobs, while today they become CEOs, etc. On the surface this data seems to contradict that.

I'm quite sure that the US goal was not to arm Islamic extremists and topple the Afghan government, but rather to arm the resistance against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. That they ended up being Islamic extremists was besides the point.
kharms··on Education Startups Court Brand-Name Teachers, Raising Ethics Issues
Those salaries don't look unreasonable to me, but suppose one finds them high - according to this[0] study, NJ has the second best public schools in the nation. This support the theory that higher teacher salaries lead to better outcomes.

kharms··on Redefine statistical significance
I've not spent much time in academia, but it was my impression that p-hacking is driven primarily by ignorance rather than willful deceit. If that is indeed the case, it would indeed limit p-hacking as there's usually a finite number of variables being looked at.

Edit: or rather, it would limit false positives that show up as a result of accidental p-value hacking, if not the process itself.

kharms··on Read This Before You Build Uber for X
Vet bills can easily go up to tens of thousands of dollars, but that's not the point. The point is that I could be away on a mountain backpacking trip for two weeks, and I need to know that the dog sitter has that money easily accessible, because I'm not going to be around to pay for it. Most folks that dog sit don't have huge savings.
kharms··on Read This Before You Build Uber for X
>But for Uber for local babysitting, why would the buyer and seller not just leave the platform permanently after meeting, and transact directly, saving both the fee?

Insurance. Uber/airbnb/rover/etc. provide insurance for both parties. To me that's a critical value add - I want to know that if my dog sitter leaves some chocolate around I won't be out a few grand. The more important the task, the more likely I am to stick with an insured party.
