kghose··on Bangladesh blogger Ananta Bijoy Das hacked to death
Hey angrybits! My original plan was to spin my HN score counter down to zero by making true and blunt statements about the drivel posted on this site (which would, natch, be down voted).

Communication to me from a person identifying as a moderator suggests to me that the deplorable tone and content of this forum is managed and encouraged by moderators.

I have now lost interest in this site. I'm now hanging out lobste.rs which I find much more meaningful.

Aww, you took a news item about Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh and put in a comment about gender politics in the US south. This is sure to get up-voted, because you know, Amerika is bad. But just to be sure, you put in 'I may get downvoted'. That was a cute touch. No one on HN can resist that combination.
kghose··on The World Religions Tree (huge visualization)
I always thought Buddhism was an off-shoot of Hinduism - a kind of cleaned up version by the Buddha, who was born Hindu.
kghose··on [dead]
But it serves to show Amerika in a bad light, which pays the bills. The rest is just detail.
kghose··on Germans, still outraged by NSA spying, learn their country may have helped
They are all at least a generation behind the US technologies.
kghose··on Germans, still outraged by NSA spying, learn their country may have helped
Are there any French companies worth spying on?

1. Grandma's funeral. You stole her glasses. Tee Hee. Boy was she cold.

2. Soccer. But you bit the other guy too.

3. That sandwich in the rucksack, left over the weekend. Eww.

kghose··on USCIS Completes the H-1B Cap Random Selection Process for FY 2016
Yes, as far as I know the lottery is independent of anything else, but you should check the USCIS website and consult an immigration lawyer.

Be careful with the lawyer: try and get one through a recommendation of someone you trust who has used their services. Because of the high demand for immigration into the United States, there are many unscrupulous people involved in such matters.

1. You can apply for permanent residency under the extraordinary individual or highly qualified individual (if you have a specialty profession e.g. STEM)

2. Academic and non-profit jobs don't have a cap. You could take such a position and then apply for permanent residency.

3. You can apply for the green card lottery (I'm assuming you are born in France).

kghose··on Why the sun is a poor dumping ground for nuclear waste (2010)
Superman can do it.
kghose··on Ask HN: Is this a good package for an Engineering Manager in Seattle?
I think it is too low, for a person of your experience and past salary history and the responsibilities that you will be taking on.
kghose··on Tim Cook: Pro-discrimination ‘religious freedom’ laws are dangerous
I doubt all Europeans are as sanctimonious.
kghose··on EFF's “Yellow Dots of Mystery” (2008)
Use FedEx Kinko's. Wear a baseball cap and sunglasses when you go in.
kghose··on Reminder: Oh, Won't You Please Shut Up? (2011)
If you have a competent lawyer, not even a high powered one, a jury of your peers will be convinced that is indeed bullshit. The problem, of course, is all the other shit you've done, which HN types think is ok, like running a drug site on the dark web, which is the actual problem ...
kghose··on Academia's 1%
Because, as we all know, politics plays no part in faculty hiring, and who you know, who your advisor was, who your drinking buddies were, have no bearing on those decisions, and it is all dependent solely on the objective merits of your work and expertise.

kghose··on Confessions of a Congressman
We have those in the US. They are called good school districts.

kghose··on Science’s Biggest Fail
My view would be to tone down the media hype. To get the message out in proportion to the evidence for it rather than in proportion to the size of the PR department of the university.
kghose··on Croatia just canceled the debts of its poorest citizens
Welcome to Democracy! :) As long as you can make fun of the politicians and not go to jail, things are nominal.
kghose··on For alleged Russian hacker, a visit to Amsterdam is a costly trip
Please don't feed the trolls.
kghose··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
So, my solution to this has been to go back to paper. I switched to a text file for a few years thinking that it would be more convenient, backup-able and I would be encouraged to write more. After I switched to the paper journal I remembered how satisfying seeing my handwriting on paper was and how motivating the sight of the journal filling up was. I've managed to discipline myself to spend a few nights each week writing in it.

kghose··on Why You Should Tell Your Children How Much You Make
> I can't think of a single argument as to why you would want to hide this valuable learning experience from your kids.

To avoid financial information being compared between families. This already happens via secondary signals, like clothes and possessions, adding direct financial comparison makes the poison stronger.

A better way is to make a toy budget based on allowances.

kghose··on They Live
And I made the same argument as you! :)

Practically speaking, whenever communism or some flavor of it was tried in scale they ended up running a large monopolar corporation, which they called "the state". It was state capitalism because the state owned all the capital.

Capitalism, is short for "private capital" a strange form of communism where anyone can own the means of production if they figure out how to.

The United States, for all its flaws, is really the only country where ANYBODY, and I mean ANYBODY, with enough gumption can become a major owner of capital.

kghose··on Canada Casts Global Surveillance Dragnet Over File Downloads
That, sir, is a grown up attitude, and has no place here on Hackernews.
kghose··on They Live
I'm not sure anyone tried a really Marxist society on any scale. I think the hippie communes were getting there. Any communist/marxist country (basically any country with the word "Democratic" in its name) was basically state capitalist. The state (a small number of elites) owned the means of production with the people as inefficient, unmotivated labor.
