kfriede··on Swedish Police Set to Take Over Pirate Bay Domains
I'd imagine they bought as many as possible several years ago, and only release 3-4 at a time.

At this point, I doubt there are very many TLD's left that don't have a TPB domain, whether bought by TPB or by a reseller.

kfriede··on Blink has been acquired by Amazon
Same here. Thought it was a bit odd of a technology for Amazon to want to buy.

Wiring the interior of your house to a network connected device, whether cloud or not, sounds crazy to me anyways. I realize 95% of the "hacked" webstreams are due to people not changing the default password and forwarding the port, but there are enough security vulnerabilities aside from that where I wouldn't feel comfortable with them installed indoors.
kfriede··on Universities spend millions on accessing results of publicly funded research
Can the funder make a stipulation that private journals are authorized, but not to be paid for with funded money?
kfriede··on Video Startup Can’t Outspend YouTube, So It Created New Currency to Pay Creators
Instead of using money that a government created out of thin air?
kfriede··on A Guide to Not Getting Hacked
I printed a blank strip of "White on Black" label tape and stuck it over on my MBP. I only see it when I'm in a super bright environment, such as in sunlight. Otherwise I forget its there.
kfriede··on FCC plans to vote to overturn U.S. net neutrality rules in December
Ah, I thought they were referring to buying a song-ringtone. Still, it's not the government's business to be telling Verizon they must sell for $1 or allow competition into their ecosystem.
kfriede··on FCC plans to vote to overturn U.S. net neutrality rules in December
Are you suggesting that Verizon should have given you that feature for "free"? In that case, they would have either passed that cost on to every customer, or not had that feature at all, taking it away from those who were willing to pay for it.
kfriede··on FCC plans to vote to overturn U.S. net neutrality rules in December
I have no problem with any of the above, IF and ONLY IF the barriers to entry for competition weren't so high. I feel that the only reason we are discussing NN right now is because government regulation has effectively given major telcos a safety net wherein they can make small competition jump through an infinite amount of hoops to service an area.

Free up the protectionism we're granting to major telcos and let the consumer choose what they are willing to pay for.

Edit: Ultimately the consumer must own the "last mile" that is feeding their residence. In that way, ISPs would lease space in the residential IDF to tie willing customers in that neighborhood in.

kfriede··on Voters say “yes” to city-run broadband in Colorado
Competing in an open market would mean they actually need to be competitive. Why be competitive when you can shell out cash to the vending machine, get guaranteed business, and not break a sweat doing it?
kfriede··on Against an Increasingly User-Hostile Web
I often feel this way about podcasts. Many great podcasts have a 0:30 intro, 1:30 of ads then 08:00 of random babble before getting into 5:00 of the meat of the podcast. The most recent one I can think of is 99% Invisible, though they're not even close to the only ones that do it.
kfriede··on Netflix Employees Are Happier with Their Job Than Facebook or Google Employees
I'd be curious to see how the data changes if the question is changed to "Do you think you are compensated enough". I personally know people who think they make too much, and may actually answer "No" to the question "Do you think you are compensated fairly?"
kfriede··on Company gives non-smokers six days holiday to compensate for cigarette breaks
Most coffee shops have tea and bottled drinks as well.
kfriede··on TwilioQuest, a new way to learn Twilio
I believe that it's because of efforts like this that you don't see the need for "Twilio Engineer." When you make integration easy for the everyday developer, they're able to spend more time focusing on the other parts of their project.
kfriede··on Bay Area hammered by loss of jobs: Lack of affordable housing strangles hiring
> and I now have nothing to show for the $thousands I paid him

You had a roof over your head while you paid him. That's not nothing.

> my rent certainly went to pay his mortgage on the property

Whereas the alternative is for him to not have the property at all because he can't afford it, and you're stuck finding somewhere else to live?

kfriede··on Smartphones Are Killing Americans, but Nobody’s Counting
But suicide is important too!
kfriede··on Hey Siri: An On-Device DNN-Powered Voice Trigger for Apple’s Personal Assistant
I'd imagine it's to give the product/voice a more human-like feel to it. "Echo" sounds like I'm talking to a robot, or a dog (or a robot dog). "Alexa" could be a human.
kfriede··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
It's more than a hidden feature though. Pressing the wifi button (where you would normally expect it to turn the radio off) literally brings up a text saying "Disconnected from {SSID}"
kfriede··on Dumb Things Camera Companies are Still Doing
I personally wouldn't care as much about that being on the camera if there was an instant and automatic way to transfer it to my phone (e.g. via bluetooth). I'd find it to be more useful that way.
kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
I think I've mostly decided that with ThingsOnReddit's new found success, and my loss of interest in my project, I may throw in the towel on it. We'll see if I still feel the same in a few weeks to revamp it in a different manner.
kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
I'd looked into it as an expansion in the future. Currently my data set was built strictly on Amazon links, so expansion would mean a rebuild/reindex of all reddit posts.
kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
The keyword searching was really bad, agreed. Akin to trying to search on Craigslist with ads having a giant list of keywords in them.
kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
That was on my to-do list for future features. I shipped it very early, and Amazon demonetized me pretty soon after that, so lots of things I wanted to do became useless.

Another for books: http://hackernewsbooks.com/

(Not affiliated, just where I took some pointers from)

kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
A product can still be copied in functionality without being copied in design. The general premise (product recommendations from Reddit) is the same. I also agree my UX is bad. I have been meaning to pivot with all the data I already have but haven't gotten there yet.

Not complaining, competition is good. Just giving warning and bringing up discussion.

kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
Their wording is "lack of original content." Affiliates is geared towards bloggers who write posts (such as reviews) about linked products. Mine was nowhere close to that. Some sites skate by with alternatives, but I can see how I need to revise in order to comply with the program.

Edit: for example, http://hackernewsbooks.com/ is a site that has been successful with Affiliates. Amazon tends to be a bit moody with that program.

kfriede··on Show HN: ThingsOnReddit – Products linked to on Reddit
I'd be curious to see the success of this with Amazon Affiliates, since it is nearly a direct copy of a site I made 2 months ago (that Amazon shut down due to lack of original content). The site is https://fastandes.com (currently at limited functionality).
kfriede··on Gitlab 10.0 released
Hglab doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
kfriede··on Face ID, Touch ID, No ID, PINs and Pragmatic Security
I think he's requesting it on the system level. For example, if iOS allowed you to force PIN+TID when opening a specific (not necessarily secure) app for the first time after an unlock. Intended for apps that don't necessarily have security built in already.
kfriede··on Apple starts cutting the bloat from iTunes by removing iOS App Store
> write software for a living

Haven't we all thought this at least once in our careers?
