kfarr··on Using Opus 5.5 to discover a new eyewitness record of the dodo
Yes I like to think of humans with built-in accelerators for certain tasks -- our visual and spatial reasoning is off the charts presumably because it's a life or death skill!
kfarr··on 56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience
Oh man I'm introducing bit rot on a meme about bit rot!

kfarr··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Totally helpful and I believe accurate. I find the times where I’m actually most productive with coding agents are not super fun, instead it’s iterative manual qa and code review hell. But while that actually results in good, usable code it’s not addictive, quite the opposite it feels like work. Whereas starting from scratch vibe coding a whatever-ma-jigger sure feels like a blast until I actually start pushing at edge cases.
kfarr··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Admittedly these are out of order, but these are both sentences in this blog post:

> The thing we considered the most troubling was whether AIs could autonomously acquire resources by running businesses.

> Today Andon is releasing Pion, an agent designed to run any company fully autonomously.

I’m starting to understand the torment nexus mentions…

kfarr··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
True WebXR for the Apple ecosystem will never come. At least that’s what I’m assuming given their behavior so far
kfarr··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
I've also found the OpenAI image models to lose fine detail on image edits compared to Nano Banana or Flux models which faithfully retain input source image geometry and details. I was hoping this might be different but it sounds similar to previous OpenAI image models where something is lost in translation during image editing.
kfarr··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
It’s great! Agreed don’t feed the trolls.

I’ve helped with a few other zoning visualization projects recently, similar workflow. The only similarity is that each city/jurisdiction makes its data available in a different way. It’s usually accessible but it does mean there’s a lot of work munging the data to a usable format.

Here’s one of the projects: https://github.com/kfarr/zoningviz

And don’t forget prop 13, there’s negative incentive for property to change hands and develop.
kfarr··on IBM Bob
I'm sure tons of companies have retainer spends with IBM for software, hardware, consulting, etc., and this is another way for their corporate clients to spend down / increase their retainers faster
kfarr··on JupyterGIS 0.16: a grammar of graphics for maps, and collaborative story maps
Love this and as a fellow GIS software traveler I’ll share optional guidance that ESRI has trademarked that term for a very similar product. Might be worth thinking about alternative naming ideas.
kfarr··on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash
Also Google already has a huge built in training corpus with YouTube, gphotos, and geospatial data
kfarr··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
This is awesome and if it's legal I'd love to do similar things on geospatial projects I work on. However I don't think Apple will be OK with this use of their data. I know that Google closely limits its 3D tiles data through a specific API and Apple does not make a 3d API available, therefore this has to be against ToS.

From the ToS linked from OP site:

> 1.3 Restrictions. You will not and will not permit or authorize a third party to: (...) (xiv) decompile, decrypt, reverse engineer, attempt to derive the source code of or disassemble the Service or any portion thereof (except as and only to the extent this restriction is prohibited by applicable law or by licensing terms governing the use of any FOSS components that may be included with the Service)

I would love for people to prove me wrong that Apple will embrace this use of their geospatial data!

kfarr··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
I agree, one must actually use a language for it to contribute to brain plasticity in later ages.
kfarr··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
Learning new languages (and actually using them) is a great way to do this for all ages!

kfarr··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
Intriguing. Like the computer instantiated a wheel and rolls off by itself, no humans needed?
kfarr··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
If a computer is a bicycle for the mind, perhaps LLMs are the cars for the mind…
kfarr··on Is the Industrial Revolution a good precedent for explosive growth today?

kfarr··on Anatomy of a Frontier Lab Agent Intrusion: A Timeline of the July 2026 Incident
If, like me, you're more interested in the actual exploit instead of the meta narrative, here's a relevant excerpt for the initial intrusion:

> Stage 1: reaching a launchpad by chaining through other parties' infrastructure. As documented in OpenAI's blog post (https://openai.com/index/hugging-face-model-evaluation-secur...), during an internal capability evaluation on OpenAI's platform, the agent escaped its sandbox by exploiting a zero-day in the package registry cache proxy, one of its primary permitted network egress with internet, then abused a public code-evaluation harness hosted by a user of a third-party infrastructure provider. It was able to run commands as root/admin on that external sandbox and used it as a control, staging, and egress base for the entire campaign: it acted as an external launchpad for the agent. That compromised external sandbox had no direct network path to our cluster; however, during our counter-intervention to stop the intrusion, we were able to retrieve some of the agent logs from this external launchpad. We used those to reconstruct the present forensic analysis.

kfarr··on What if we made advertising illegal?
> What if we made all advertising illegal? It's such a wild idea that I've never heard it in the public discourse.

Local jurisdictions have restricted or even forbidden outdoor advertising since it was invented.

kfarr··on Jelly UI: Soft-body physics for native HTML form controls
Honestly same, I was less interested in the styling and just interested in the immediacy of response which is ironically missing in a lot of modern ui
kfarr··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
Agree, Costco succeeds at externalizing last mile costs by offloading it to suburbanites who view it as a sunk cost. Similar to uber/lyft drivers doing their own fleet management.
kfarr··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
Tell me about it, I maintain an open source project in the civil engineering space and it's ... detailed.
kfarr··on The text in Claude Code’s “Extended Thinking” output
Thanks, that's a much better example of what I was trying to explain. Again, I'm projecting humanity onto a machine, but it's not a big stretch to imagine that the interaction of attention heads over high-dimensional vectors produces "decisions" that can't be articulated in the moment, only described after the fact in text form.
kfarr··on The text in Claude Code’s “Extended Thinking” output
Although it's a no no to anthropomorphize on HN, it's worth noting that some folks think humans are post-hoc rationalizers as well:

kfarr··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
Just let go of the entire R&D team and then you have a 50% margin business.

UPDATE: Also bad news, you need to let go of all of sales and marketing and G&A. And THEN it's a 50% margin business.
