keytweetlouie··on Exception Safety, Garbage Collection etc. (a.k.a. Why Does Java Suck So Bad?)
This fact has lead to the popularity of the springframework in Java. They use the template design pattern to hide all of the resource acquisition and release. This makes it much easier to code as you don't have to "remember" to close your db connections. The remember argument is somewhat weak because you still need to remember to write your destructor. I do buy that it's easier to remember it in one place than all over the code.
keytweetlouie··on How rich kids already won the career game
Do you have any evidence or case studies to back up your claim? That rich kids earn more than middle class kids on average?
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: What are Unit Tests and Why are they important?
A test that isolates a unit of work from the main program. It can be many functions or one. The idea is to "exercise" your code. That way when it's used in a full integrated flow there are no surprises. Check out TestDrivenDevelopment methodology.
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: Is there a good website to hire cheap freelancers for basic data entry?
thx
keytweetlouie··on Why They Were Able To Raise Money
It's about the journey also. You may not hit it big but you can damn sure try. I bet all the lessons you learn will help you succeed in whatever you try next
keytweetlouie··on Eric Schmidt On Google Wave's Death Video
The audio quality was pretty bad. The content was good.
keytweetlouie··on Rate my startup: KeyTweet, a Twitter client that learns what you like
Thanks for sharing your top words. We are looking into using bi-grams for the top words. When you say "look at multiple words" are you referring to how google and wave are not together?

It's back up
keytweetlouie··on Python has a GIL, and lots of complainers
Thanks for pushing to get python in a more competitive position. Even if you don't like threads it's a bad idea to not let anyone use them. With growing multi-core machines developers want all the options available to them. I don't want my language to tell me what I can't do. Running python on other vm's is a fine idea but the most effort goes into cpython NOT jython or others. I wouldn't want great features on a VM that gets little attention from the python core developers. Ironically I'm complaining and not helping.sorry. I would love to tackle these issue's if I had the time.
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: What are you working on today?
I've been working on improving keytweet.com's algorithm. I develop our python code in idle on windows. The goal is increase the number of relevant results that are related to the popular topics in your feed.
keytweetlouie··on Redis weekly update #6 - 2.2 and VM
Please bring support for windows. @ keytweet.com we are compiling the source against cgwin. I have been using redis in place of mysql for certain tasks. I don't think I would go full redis unless the virtual memory could write keys to the filesystem as well. Hard disks are always going to be bigger than ram and machines with gigs of ram are expensive. Thanks for the hard work. We're making good use of redis
keytweetlouie··on If you can't buy your investor a beer, don't take their money
Thanks for the advice. In your section about getting to know vc's you mention a few methods. What method have you found to be most successful? Do you believe coming out of ycombinator gave you an instant "in" with VC's?
keytweetlouie··on 300 actions a minute? Truly mastering StarCraft
Simply put. the most useful article on hacker news...ever. I bow in envy to the 300+ apm people.
keytweetlouie··on PyPy 1.3 released
Great work! I can't wait till the day this becomes a drop in replacement for cpython. C extensions go a long way towards that goal.
keytweetlouie··on Steve Jobs email reply generator
1 minute of time to use it and i can't even copy and paste my email..dogh!
keytweetlouie··on Credit card company rejects customers with too-good credit scores
Good customers are the ones who pay the minimum
keytweetlouie··on Java 4-ever
It doesn't work at all you are right. That is why twitter is moving away from ruby and towards scala for reliability...sarcasm
keytweetlouie··on Java 4-ever
Java is everywhere. You wouldn't see it on hacker news but rest assured major corporations around the world are still using java and will still be using java for years to come. I do acknowledge some may switch to dot net.
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: Why should I switch from php to django or rails?
Django is a pure pleasure. You get all the power of python. The documentation is great and the google user group is even better. Django gives you a bunch of stuff for free ORM, admin interface, and authentication. Of course freedom comes with a cost but their built in tools cover 90% of the common use cases. Syntax in my opinion is much better in python.
keytweetlouie··on The biggest bet on longbets.com: $1,000,000
What if you die before then does the money come out of the loser's estate?
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: PHP or Ruby on Rails
PHP vs ruby is not like going from java to ruby. You may see productivity gains. However, PHP is so well established you may even save time by taking advantage of all the open source code written. PHP has done wonders for the devs at facebook and digg. I feel the need for "nerd cred" is too high these days. Using older tech that has a proven track record is still a good idea. Your start-up may not be the cool kid on the block but once you're making money nobody cares. I do use python and django myself and LOVE IT! Can add that to your list?
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: Is there currently a problem?
Will hacker news be creating a fail whale page?
keytweetlouie··on Ask HN: PHP or Ruby on Rails
Keep in mind it will be easier to hire PHP dev's than ruby developers. If you find a good ruby dev you will have to pay $$$$.
