keyme··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
Chat gpt will never get smarter though (learn anything new), unless actual people use stack overflow to provide the training data.

The most important comment on SO is the one where the OP says "I did this and that, and can confirm it's working". There is no such data when you only use the chat bot. It's a major problem. Perhaps the solution is a more tailored "stack gpt", where the "conversations" are published along with the human responses.

keyme··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
Another reason to root your phone first thing before you use it for anything.

Was in a similar situation, having a real backup of every apps data (including the "secret" data) saved me a couple of times.

keyme··on What’s going on in the world of extensions
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/collections/

You can create your own "extension collection", and change the default one used by FF on Android. I use the Fennec build of FF from F-droid (Playstore build doesn't support this).

The smartphone: A Spy in Your Pocket Threatens the End of Privacy

Pegasus was just a way of some governments to get their hands on a small part of the action GOOG & FB are swimming in.

keyme··on Show HN: Quick tunnels to localhost with one command and no binary download
Add a mode to share a file, again using SSH alone. Works together with "python3 -m http.server", obviously, but should be possible with SSH alone. This would be the first time since the invention of NATs one can share a file over the internet without uploading it anywhere or downloading any executable!
keyme··on Show HN: Quick tunnels to localhost with one command and no binary download
Very clever! This is the most hacky and elegant solution to this problem I've seen.

Yes. Or, in other words, maintaining morality despite laws.
keyme··on Ask HN: Starlink Signup failed, no recourse
A lot of east Africa has surprisingly good LTE coverage. I assume you know this. Of course, starlink will have higher speeds.

Anyway, here's an idea: livestreamed self drive safaris!

Unfeasible against SpaceX who have a higher mass to orbit capability than the rest of the world combined, soon many times over.

IMHO connectivity to the global internet is less important than local communication between protesters in geographic proximity.

Having these pirate base stations mesh together is also achieveable. Freeing end user equipment from the requirement to mesh (not achieveable).

keyme··on The Iran Firewall: A preliminary report
Another idea: create an easy way to set up pirate LTE base stations.

Hacked femtocells? SDR? Something more clever?

Distribute eSIMs to everyday people.

The pirate operator takes all the risk and technical difficulties.

keyme··on The Iran Firewall: A preliminary report
TV dishes transmit very clearly in the visible light spectrum :)

As for TX detection, you'd be surprised. Directional signals like starlink uplink are fairly hard to detect.

keyme··on The Iran Firewall: A preliminary report
Half the households in Iran have an illegal satellite dish on the roof to receive disallowed TV from abroad.

This is punishable and does get punished (rarely, I hear). Doesn't deter anyone.

Edit: it will also be quite difficult to detect electronically, judging by the fact that even Russia fails to jam these signals on the battlefield.

keyme··on The Iran Firewall: A preliminary report
Indeed. You would need a starlink competitor from another jurisdiction to fight US censorship if that comes to be.
keyme··on The Iran Firewall: A preliminary report
Air dropping starlink terminals onto protesters is the solution.

In fact, if you live anywhere outside of the US, owning one "just in case" is good for future proofing your freedom, IMHO. Kind of like being armed.

Edit: in fact, starlink v2 global LTE-from-space coverage will be a true game changer for world freedom. We can only hope this comes to be sooner rather than later.

keyme··on Meta has banned the personal Facebook accounts for everyone on our team
So a Newpipe for Facebook? Finally. For sure more difficult to pull off, but good luck!
keyme··on Ask HN: Ads triggered by WhatsApp “end to end encrypted” messages?
For a few years, WhatsApp "e2ee" messages were stored in plain text on your Google drive backup (that's how it worked on Android. Don't know about apple). This was even stated in their FAQ.

This was as part of a FB/GOOG deal where the storage for WhatsApp backups did not count for your Google drive quota.

Recently the backups did finally become encrypted as well. With a key known to the WhatsApp app. (On Android, stored in a file called "key" in the apps local storage)

However, when you restore the backup, where does the key come from? From the WhatsApp servers, obviously.

So still, FB and GOOG together still have full access to your daily backed up messages.

And the free storage deal is still there, of course.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong and you know better.

Right.. Are cloudflare CDN nodes "the network"? Or a computer?

Because they're "stopping me" already, as of late.

keyme··on Cops wanted to keep mass surveillance app secret; privacy advocates refused
You have no power. The moment you'll come close to regainig it in any way, it'll be called an "insurrection" and you'll be neutralized and disgraced.
keyme··on You're not the only one whos confused about the economy. Experts are baffled too
Everybody is trying to explain this away with Russia, Covid... I'm not even following the excuses anymore. It'll be climate change soon. But that's ridiculous.

Literally the only way to have inflation is if the Fed chooses to cause inflation, or not to resist inflation, of which it has done both in the last few years.

keyme··on FCC: TikTok is unacceptable security risk and should be removed from app stores
Genuine LOL.

Uncle Sam asking the 2 great censors of the west to get rid of the most popular app in their stores, so that the east will cease competing with said Uncle on who gets to brainwash their citizens. Gold.

Whichever way this goes, one of these parties loses big, which is a good thing for us humans.

keyme··on My journey through the American immigration system as a computer engineer
Even with a tourist visa that I got years back it isn't smooth going into the USA anymore (as a shithole-country passport holder). I went many times, but last time I got "the room", for absolutely no reason, and nothing was asked of me but the standard questions. It only took hours in an intimidating setting.

USA, you're just another country. Next time I'll take my tourist money elsewhere.

I really don't wanna argue covid stuff online ever again, but let's have one final comment.

It is insane, because unless you plan to become a hermit kingdom forever, you can never keep something like the omicron strain out as long as the rest of the world exists. It will eventually get in. You will eventually lose control. The death toll will eventually be the same regardless.

All you do is delay the inevitable, while your policies are additionally causing internal societal damage (economical, psychological, political, etc) that rivals any reduced death toll you managed to avoid .

keyme··on My Taipei Quarantine
Cool level of insanity.

I've traveled the world this last year, and have certainly experienced all sorts of stupidity, ridiculous bureaucracy and corruption in this regard. Like OP I discovered that I enjoy going through these Kafkaesque mazes, and found it pretty fun. Literally never knowing if I'm passing a border post or having to turn back (spoiler: I never turned back).

That said, I didn't go to any of the east Asian countries, because it would have been "too much" (as is clear from this post).

In Latin America and Africa, all the "covid policy" was just a clear corruption opportunity being taken advantage of. More things you could "do wrong" is a big boon for every corrupt official. In Africa, border personnel were happy to take a bribe as your "PCR test" (and the one time I actually did a PCR test, they did not accept it, they only wanted the bribe). Police were happy to enforce the mask rules (on white tourists only, in the middle of the night). Businesses were happy to convert to a "PCR testing clinic" by painting the walls white, sticking something in your nose, and giving you a piece of paper for money (even if you wanted a real PCR test, you couldn't know it's real). You see the picture.

Thing is, I've learned that the overt corruption in these "developing" countries is just less sophisticated version of what's going on in the rest of the world. So, the next time you encounter bullshit like this, just try to ask yourself why are they doing this? Who gains from this? Etc. It's a fun game, and sometimes you come to interesting realizations.

Not OP, but probably Russia. Not that there are no other examples in the last 20 years, it's just that some are more controversial to call out.
