kercker··on Users Abandon Facebook After Cambridge Analytica Findings
"The hashtag #DeleteFacebook appeared more than 10,000 times on Twitter within a two-hour period on Wednesday, according to the analytics service ExportTweet. On Tuesday, it was mentioned 40,398 times, according to the analytics service Digimind."

Is this really such a big deal for Facebook?

Suppose 50000 persons delete their Facebook everyday, then it will just lose 1,825,0000 users one year, not counting new users joining Facebook every year. And Facebook has 2 billion users.

Edit: The number lost in one year is 1,825,0000, not 1,825,000.

Xi's name "Xi Jinping" will appear in the Constitution, whereas Hu just gets his "thought" without his name into the Constitution.

Besides, Hu's thought is to be put into Constitution after he had stepped down for 5 years. Xi's thought will appear in the Constitution when he is in the middle of paramount power.

kercker··on Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore
Ofo offered monthly pass of 1 yuan per month in Beijing for some time last year and even if you don't have a monthly pass, you can ride at a fee of 1 yuan per hour.

Mobike offers seasonly pass of 5 yuan per 3 months in Beijing.

Both of them are heavily subsided by investment. Sooner or later, people will get used to low price or no price, and I don't think they will finally generate profits after the fierce competition between them ends.

Everything can happen to anyone.

I think stickfigure is trying to say that, with cameras above head, which will result in higher probability of being caught if someone commits a crime, the one who would commit a crime if there was no camera will refrain from committing a crime.

With cameras, the probability of losing life will be smaller than without them.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
Maybe you should not use anything Made in China, 'a country with lower values of ethic', because anything Made in China you consumed contribute to the economy of the China.

If you continue to use made in China, your criticizing Google setting up an AI lab in China is just hypocrisy.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
Can you give some credible sources on "Tibetan and Uighur genocides that are ongoing"?
kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
Maybe that Google sets up an AI lab is not in the interest of the US, but it is in the interest of Google.

Google is a multinational company and its employees come from diverse countries. Although it is headquartered in the US and its founders are American citizens, its core interests may not fully align with the core interests of the US.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
I think Google just wants to recruit AI talents from China and uses research from the AI center in China in markets it is not banned.

If so, they don't need to interact with the government that much like when they offered a search service to Chinese netizens.

I can think some companies that just do this. Hulu has an office in Beijing, although it doesn't offer video streaming service in China. And Grab has an office in Beijing too, although it only targets Southeast Asia market.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
Isn't something published available to all the world?

If Google first publishes some result X, and Chinese researchers find this result, they are free to use this result to publish some result Y, regardless of whether Google opens an AI center in China.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
An AI center is not a product like a search engine or Windows, or an e-commerce site.

It helps China cultivate talents, why would China limit its influence.

MSRA accomplishes many things worthwhile such as ResNet in China, and it prospers now. Some researchers enter MSRA, and some leave. They enter or leave not because the government force them to do so, they enter or leave because they can tell where opportunity resides.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
Once www.people.cn (the website of People's Daily) built a search engine and failed. If Chinese government stole search technology from Google, why would it give it to Baidu not to a search engine set up by its mouthpiece?

Baidu had already been popular in China before Google officially entered China, so there is no 'this is how Baidu got started' thing.

kercker··on Google to open artificial intelligence centre in China
I find your argument rather lame.

First, Chinese government is not Nazi and Google is not IBM. You can't just say that a government is Nazi just because you hate that government.

Second, even if Google openly broke with Chinese government, it still has offices in China. I doubt that Google opens an AI center in China to "allow its DeepMind technology to be used to spy on Chinese citizens and dissidents", and I do think that Google has a big ambition than you can think in China. And I think that ambition is to advance AI with the help of local talents.

kercker··on TP-Link firmware sends six DNS requests and one NTP query every 5 seconds
Update: According to ktta (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15912467), there is mistake in my calculation too.

"138KB * 24 * 3600 / 5" should be 2.3287GB per day. And it's 2.3287GB * 30 per month.

Update 2: "For comparison, a 5-minute check would be considered a pretty aggressive checking interval, and would only consume 1,37 MB per month. Instead, TP-Link goes through the same amount of data in just 82 minutes."

This assertion from the article has multiple errors too.

-----------------------------------------------------

The whole argument of the author is built on a flawed calculation by the author and the author exaggerated the number by a factor of 10.

715MB/month in the title and the article should be 71.5MB/month according to other information provided by the author.

According to the author, "TP-Link product is using about 138 KB every 5 seconds — or 23,85 MBs per day — on timekeeping."

23,85 MBs per day is not right, because 138KB * 24*3600/5 is about 2.328 MBs not 23,85 MBs.

kercker··on Jailed for a Text: China’s Censors Are Spying on Mobile Chat Groups
In a democratic country like U.S., they will not jail you for your tweets that try to sabotage the government, besides closing your account.

You can say anything in a democratic country, except when you are forced to shut up.

kercker··on Jailed for a Text: China’s Censors Are Spying on Mobile Chat Groups
You can share the articles to your friends in China, and they surely will not be jailed.

And I think you can talk with them about China's internal politics through WeChat if they are interested in these talks, if there is not a third person will report your conversations to the authority.

The person in the article is 'jailed', because someone publicizes his comment or reports it to authority.

kercker··on Jailed for a Text: China’s Censors Are Spying on Mobile Chat Groups
This is totally nonsense.

kercker··on Apple CEO backs China’s ‘open’ Internet vision as censorship reaches new heights
What do you mean by 'leave China'?

Do you mean it stops selling its products in China? Or stop assembling iPhones in China? Or both?

According to this page (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/apple/where-are-apple-pro...), 'the assembly of Apple's devices is for the most part done in China'.

If Apple leaves China suddenly, I don't think it can build that large an assembly line quickly to satisfy the global demand of iPhones.

And according this document (https://www.apple.com/newsroom/pdfs/fy17-q4/Q4FY17DataSummar...), half of Apple's Q4 2017 revenue come from iPhone. So, if the supply of iPhones is greatly reduced, the cash Apple sits on will quickly run out. Then Apple will be in great trouble.

kercker··on Apple CEO backs China’s ‘open’ Internet vision as censorship reaches new heights
If Apple doesn't manufacture iPhones in China, can the combined manufacture capacities in these countries satisfy the demand of iPhones globally?

What I want to say is that Apple does not only sell products in China, it also manufactures its products in China.

kercker··on “Beautiful” in the Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party
http://language.chinadaily.com.cn/19thcpcnationalcongress/20...

This is the speech Xi delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It contains this sentence. If you skim the speech, you will find multiple mentions of '美丽', all of them environment related.

The other four words are related to other aspects of policies of China.

富强(prosperous) is related to economy.

民主(democratic) is related to politics.

文明(culturally advanced) is related to culture.

和谐(harmonious) which was added to the constitution by Xi's predecessor Hu Jintao, is related to society.

And 美丽(beautiful) is related to ecology or environment.

------

富强, 民主, 文明 and 和谐 are the first words of the 'core socialist values' which contain 12 such words and which were laid out at the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, when Hu stepped down and Xi become the paramount leader of Communist Party of China.

'Core socialist values' are taught to students from kindergarten to college. And these words of 'core socialist values' are plastered over walls, buildings and flyovers at every cities in China.

kercker··on “Beautiful” in the Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party
'美丽' is used to describe 'ecological civilization', not to describe beautiful cities. It is used against the backdrop that pollution (of water, air, soil, etc.) is very serious across China, and there are many complaints from ordinary people.

You can see the meaning of '美丽' from this sentence '生态环境根本好转,美丽中国目标基本实现' (the ecological environment has fundamentally improved, and the goal of a beautiful China has basically been achieved).

kercker··on “Beautiful” in the Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party
These five words in the constitution of the CCP describe the five aspects of policies in China: economy(富强), politics(民主), culture(文明), society(和谐), and ecological civilization(美丽).

美丽 is used to describe a China that has clear water, clear sky, green fields ...

It is not that abstract as described in the article.
