kennydude··on Rust cross-platform GPUI components
Looks great for those using Rust - however I do wonder how well this works, if at all, under screen readers and other accessible tech?
kennydude··on Show HN: Chili3d – A open-source, browser-based 3D CAD application
For some users, they're perfect (not all - schools etc need Win/Linux/Mac). I have family members who should just have a Chromebook as all they do is browse the internet - copy and paste is a stretch for them!
kennydude··on I still like Sublime Text in 2025
Sublime Text has always been great and reliable.

But like with everything, having a great choice of fantastic text editors is always good so everyone finds something they enjoy using.

kennydude··on I tried every top email marketing tool
https://www.mailcoach.app/ Mailcoach by Spatie (who work on a lot of really good Laravel open source stuff) seems decent at this. You can either pay for a self-hosted license, or use their cloud.
kennydude··on Incident: Wordpress.org has blocked WP Engine customers from registry
Not out of the box really. It's incredibly frustrating where everyone "rolls their own solution" for commercial plugins
kennydude··on Yaak is now open source
I've not heard of this before and upon looking this looks fantastic! Cross Platform and sticking to being good at requests!

Postman really grinds on me as to how it's gone down a path of forcing "collaboration" when sometimes I just want to ping some requests and test things!

kennydude··on Welcome to the Login.gov Developer Guide
Looks to be the USA equivalent to the GOV.UK One Login system which is also being pushed. Good to see goverments trying to working across departments to make things, eventually, easier https://www.sign-in.service.gov.uk/
kennydude··on Can a product with "0g sugar" contain lactose?
Lacto free milk only works for when you are making stuff from scratch and not buying pre-made stuff. For whenever I use milk, I buy almond these days as it's marginally cheaper and I think it tastes nicer on a personal preference.
kennydude··on Can a product with "0g sugar" contain lactose?
Sadly is the case for me as well. A friend of mine went vegan just for the sake of at least it eliminated any possibility of diary products in their food.

At least in the UK the enzyme pills can add up quite quickly in cost.

kennydude··on Ask HN: Why Google shut down business.site website feature?
Google likes to shutter things all of the time which is a bit of a shame. It does show that having a website which shows your business is a good thing.

Sadly while not free, having your own site could help plug the gap from the service (happy to discuss this on email/call)

kennydude··on Kivy – a cross platform Python UI framework
Yeah the stock photography feels really off to me as well and not really helping show off what the project is. Strange vibes
kennydude··on Show HN: I created an After Effects alternative
ah nice :) will have to give it a go someday when i need to deal with an illustrator file
kennydude··on Show HN: I created an After Effects alternative
Looks fantastic, and the comment about Photopea. Photopea is such a gem, and can't wait for their Vectorpea to launch as it's got me out of trouble so many times when I don't need an Adobe license for opening a file once a month or so (I just wish Photopea was OpenSource)
kennydude··on How to make a great government website
The UK Government's efforts to make their services digital, easy to understand and workable is such a great effort. The digital department also has many common tools to help such as notifications, forms, payments as integratable APIs instead of each government unit needing to procure this (at great cost) themselves!
kennydude··on Spotify won't open-source Car Thing, but starts refund process
This would be great if it were easier to do as it would make for quite a nifty, if not very weird Android device by the looks of things!
kennydude··on Cobalt – lightweight HTML5 application container from YouTube
I saw this when looking at how the terrible Virgin Media TV dongle has a YouTube app! Nice to see it being open source!
kennydude··on Iconv, set the charset to RCE: Exploiting the glibc to hack the PHP engine
Might be a little naive but this looks to be mostly exploited by blindly trusting user input which pretty much always should be avoided
kennydude··on CSS Text Box Trim
That JS hack looks perfect. Except it shows up just how bad a font I've had to deal with is - Bebas Neue where the dimensions are just completely out of wack on it's little chart.
kennydude··on Map Machine: Python renderer for OpenStreetMap with custom icons
This is absolutely perfect! For a couple years now I've been looking for (and badly trying myself) to have a good way without paying quite a lot of money to create SVGs out of OpenStreetMap data!
kennydude··on CSS Text Box Trim
How strange after seeing this after pulling my hair out the other day about this exact issue. If only it was implemented today!
kennydude··on Ask HN: Is iCloud a viable alternative to Dropbox? Any other alternatives?
Personally I use my own NAS drive with Syncthing under TrueNAS for my bulk of files so that I phyiscally own everything. My NAS then has an off-site backup to Backblaze S3

Other stuff, especially if I want sharing of files with realtime editing I use Zoho WorkDrive which is pretty affordable (along with their other suite) https://go.zoho.com/lAl (full transparency - affiliate link)

kennydude··on Client libraries are better when they have no API?
> That barely qualifies as an API, it's just HTTP. So what possible use could a client library be?

Wikipedia: API stands for Application Programming Interface. In the context of APIs, the word Application refers to any software with a distinct function. Interface can be thought of as a contract of service between two applications.

This is an interface between two applications.

I do like the simplicity of the APIs provided though, but they _are_ APIs

kennydude··on Lago, Open-Source Stripe Alternative, banks $22M in funding
Loads exist in the marketplace just each with pros/cons and a likely harder to work with API
kennydude··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
I just wish Google Scholar would be a bit more open in terms of debugging why a site isn't picked up by the platform
kennydude··on Framework Laptop 16 Review
Yeah I once had my old Macbook Air get insanely hot to the point it felt dangerous. I left it in the sink (dry and in case it blew up it would be somewhere non-flammable) to calm down and it was fine a few hours later.
kennydude··on Darling: Run macOS Software on Linux
Very very unlikely - as far as i know iMessage requires a Mac or iPhone serial number to authenticate :(
kennydude··on Moving from AWS to Bare-Metal saved us $230k per year
AWS does require some expertise to master considering the sheet number of products and options. Tick the wrong box and cost increases by 50% etc.

Different solutions work best for different companies.

kennydude··on We’re opening up access to Gov.uk forms
This is fantastic to see and should hopefully reduce the cost massively for building out, what is effectively forms, for other government services!
kennydude··on StarLite 12.5-inch Linux tablet
Same image as used on their laptop https://starlabs.systems/pages/starbook
kennydude··on StarLite 12.5-inch Linux tablet
Barrel connectors I found always fail within 18 months for a lot of laptops I've known people buy (mostly from cheap brands such as Acer).

While not saying USB-C is a great choice instead. Personally I just wish everyone could have generic magnetic Magsafe style connectors.
