kennydude··on The UK's online ID plans: expensive, intrusive, unnecessary
We really don't.

To prove who you are you need a driving license, or a passport, even if you are not planning on using either for their intended purposes. Both cost money, and if you don't spend extra money (which a lot of people may not have) to get a full driving license, require renewal fees.

Otherwise you need to have x number of documents from 1 list, and y number of documents from another. And hope that you've got them, or bad luck.

It's honestly a nightmare when you get older and places don't even accept a birth certificate and bills going online. A lot of places don't accept PDF printouts of bills too!

kennydude··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
Yup. My uncle worked at a bank and had to deal with this quite often.

Even better, at least in the UK, the bank had tools to find out what the subscription was for and whose name it was in,

kennydude··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
I'm sure I saw somewhere else that these allegations have only ever appeared on that website. Nowhere else has any other sources,
kennydude··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
Apparently now the rules are no adult things, or anything moderately related to adult content now,

Real pain because Stripe are one of the better providers to integrate with :(

kennydude··on YouTube Alternatives at a Glance
It looks like generic filler SEO content 1&1 are trying to do
kennydude··on MGA Entertainment: A privately-owned toy company doing billions in revenue
Yup, they're so expensive and have multiple layers of waste plastic. And I thought twisty ties were bad enough for packaging things
kennydude··on P2 powers internal collaboration at WordPress.com, and is now free
I'm sure this used to be a theme for WordPress at one point? Either way, it's really unusual how Automattic haven't released it to the public
kennydude··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
Some of the arguments here reminds me of "Unauthorized Bread" (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/01/unauthorized-bread-a-...) where, take a fridge. Why would any fridge be allowed to not accept certain brands of milk? But, it is the manufacturer's product and right to do so right?
kennydude··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
Sure, when Apple will just sue any competitor for "infringing" on it's millions of stupid software patents
kennydude··on Show HN: UPUP Simple Credit Card Verification to Reduce Fraud
Especially when the card providers move the risk, and therefore part of the cost of the transaction onto the bank. It's up to the bank to make 3D Secure, secure by authenticating the user in it's own way.
kennydude··on Show HN: Cookie Recipe Generator
Looks really useful, except for people especially in England, Corn Syrup isn't a common ingredient :(
kennydude··on Ask HN: What do I move on to from Django?
Honestly Django is still fine. It works, and if it lets you build products which work properly, and reliably, why not use it?
kennydude··on Apple declined to implement 16 Web APIs in Safari due to privacy concerns
And yet there's still no reason why they won't add Web Notifications to iOS Safari.
kennydude··on Bootstrap 5 alpha
You don't need to use BootstrapVue at all. For things like Modals just add the appropiate divs and change classes in the same order.
kennydude··on Show HN: Bear – Minimal blogging platform
Nice to see a minimal Django-based blog platform!
kennydude··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
The only thing I didn't like was Microsoft adding an annoying banner asking me to install some Points extension :(

Not cool putting adverts on your Github pages like that

kennydude··on GitQlient – a multi-platform GUI-oriented Git client written with Qt
After seeing quite a few new Git clients, Sublime Merge is still, imho, the easiest to use
kennydude··on SmileBASIC 4 for Nintendo Switch
I wonder how tihs compares to FUZE https://www.fuze.co.uk/nintendo-switch.html
kennydude··on Permanent.org – Nonprofit, secure cloud storage
Don't forget B2 involves putting that data onto multiple hard-drives and ensuring it isn't lost. What if that single disk were to be lost? You're paying Backblaze to ensure that GB can be accessed in the future
kennydude··on Plan for 5 Years of Lockdown
> most hospitals are bankrupt for lack of running any profitable procedures

That's a very American problem due to having private hospitals...

kennydude··on Google Duo rolls out realtime AV1
I think their blogs are still based off Blogger which hasn't been updated in quite some time. (which they own so they could fix themsleves..)
kennydude··on Show HN: Gentle is a social app where you give and get kindness
The asthetic sorta reminds me of Animal Crossing with the envelopes and such. Seems kinda neat
kennydude··on Moving from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha
Yup, that's my thing is that they control the entire thing. Although it could be like joke where "AI" ends up being just a bunch of "if statements".
kennydude··on Moving from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha
hCAPTCHA looks interesting, although it seems they use Blockchain for no real reason compared to just storing the payments as rows (i.e what they gain from being chained on top of another)
kennydude··on Ask HN: I need a blog engine, which will be around for 10-15 years
WordPress.

It's open source, easy to use, hostable pretty much everywhere and you can easily export and move your content anywhere.

I'm sure even if Automattic go bust, it'll continue

kennydude··on How Gov.uk Notify reliably sends text messages to users
Yeah, I would have liked to have seen that. Really wish the phone networks were required to blacklist anyone using something similar as the sender though. A few scammers I've seen have been able to use the "GOV_UK" sender string :(
kennydude··on How Gov.uk Notify reliably sends text messages to users
It's better than it used to be. Still, a way off from what it needs to be.

The first version was on Microsoft Dynamics (yes a CRM...) for whatever reason iirc.

kennydude··on Ask HN: What are your favorite low-coding apps / tools as a developer?
Forest Admin looks really nice, but I wish you could host the admin UI yourself. Not a fantastic impression for clients if Forest (for whatever reason) suddenly stops offering it's service and your admin panel vanishes into thin air :(
kennydude··on How to manage HTML DOM with vanilla JavaScript only?
One of the issues here is that the examples don't add any accessibility hints at all. We really should be encouraging people to add as many as possible!
kennydude··on GoWFH: Find and list verified Work From Home and Remote jobs from top companies
Annoyingly quite a few say "Worldwide" until you click into them and then it says "must live within x miles of y"
