kenny_r··on Detecting the use of “curl – bash” server side
For me personally, the security aspect isn't even the reason I dislike curl | bash installers. There's no standard behaviour for curl|sh, and it re-introduces many problems that were solved by package managers decades ago.

Each time I'm about to run `curl https://install.newhotness.io|sudo sh` I'm left with the following questions:

* Will it work? I'm on Arch Linux. This installer was probably tested on OSX and Ubuntu and deemed "portable". I've seen curl|sudo sh installers trying to apt-get installing dependencies.

* Where does it place files? I've got a ~/.meteor folder that's 784MB. Why would you install software libraries and binaries to $HOME? I now have to tell my backup tool to ignore it when backing up my home partition, great. The FHS was established for a reason, people.

* Correlary to the previous question: How do I uninstall it? Maybe all files were installed to a hidden folder in ~/, maybe there's some stuff in /opt, or /usr/local, or who knows where else. If the installer doesn't implement uninstall functionality itself, I now have to go hunt for the stuff it placed in my filesystem.

I understand the need to be able to distribute your software without having to implement native packaging for OSX/Debian/Ubuntu/Red Hat/Fedora/Arch/...

Docker solved this problem. If you're feeling lazy when it comes to distributing your app, just ship a Docker container and be done with it.

kenny_r··on Bash on Ubuntu on Windows
This brings many of the parts that make up Ubuntu to Windows, but the Linux kernel isn't one of them.

That being said, I'm typing this comment my workstation running Linux and I for one am getting very tired of this year of the Linux desktop joke.

What OS you run is an individual choice, stop trying to declare a single winner.

kenny_r··on Show HN: Pipecat – Connect message queues with Unix pipes
This looks really cool. I went ahead and added it to the Arch User Repositories[0].

kenny_r··on Toyota Unintended Acceleration and the Big Bowl of “Spaghetti” Code (2013)
Paul Sebastian Ziegler gave a talk at the HITB security conference in 2012 titled "Hacking in the Far East".

To me it was an eye opener to learn about the different attitudes of tech professionals in countries such as South Korea and particularly Japan.

I highly recommend watching it some time.

kenny_r··on Sonder Keyboard
The Optimus keyboards [1] by Art. Lebedev Studio have been around for a while but they've always been prohibitively expensive. While this keyboard doesn't have color in the displays, it's actually affordable.

Another similar product is the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate [2] keyboard, but only 10 if its buttons have programmable displays.

I wonder why Razer (or anyone else) haven't made a standalone keyboard that followed the approach they took with their Switchblade [3] concept. They put transparent keys over a large lcd panel. It's much cheaper than putting a tiny lcd display inside each key.

kenny_r··on Pantone Color Institute Announces PANTONE Minion Yellow
The minions pictured on the very same page are clearly a darker shade of yellow. When I grap the pantone color with a color picker I get #f8e763, while a minion gives me #fad24e.
kenny_r··on ForerunnerDB – Lightweight JavaScript Database with Persistence and Data-Binding
Is this similar to Meteor.js' minimongo[1]?

kenny_r··on Ask HN: Switching from OS X to Linux
Wow, I had never heard of this but it's really cool. It comes with a couple of commands that are really impressive.

tycat can put an image inline in your terminal. tyls gives you an inline folder view with thumbnails that you can click and preview.

Feels like a thoroughly modern terminal emulator.

kenny_r··on [dead]
If every media outlet shows the uncensored image there isn't a single target for violent reprisals.

Collectively shouting "I'm Spartacus" protects the collective and sends a strong message.

kenny_r··on Stop writing stateful HTML
I stand corrected.
kenny_r··on Stop writing stateful HTML
Compiling to Javascript is the way Dart solves its chicken-or-egg problem.

Chrome ships a Dart VM and hopefully Mozilla, Apple and Microsoft will follow suit one day.

kenny_r··on Use a Fake Location for Cheap Airfare
Wouldn't that essentially be identity theft?
kenny_r··on Introducing a more powerful Dropbox Pro
Helping Dropbox grow is arguably the single greatest achievement of YC to date. I think in that light it makes sense that news about Dropbox gets on the front page of news.ycombinator.com.
kenny_r··on Codefights
I just gave up trying to connect it to Google or Twitter since those don't work. I ended up using the email signup option but neither signing up nor logging in happen over HTTPS.

That's why authentication through reliable big services like Google is a thing guys. At least they get it right.

kenny_r··on Codefights
This looks really cool. Please consider adding a Github signup option.

It's startupschool@ycombinator.com and I believe the deadline is 4pm local time.
kenny_r··on Kindle Unlimited
Very saddened by this:

We're sorry. Kindle Unlimited is currently only available for US customers.

kenny_r··on Exercise to Detect Algorithmically Generated Domain Names
In the output of line 85 there two punycoded[1] domain names: xn--g5t518j which is actually 微風 and xn--42cgk1gc8crdb1htg3d which is actually มอไซค์มือสอง.

As a result of the encoding, the domain names look junky while perhaps they aren't.

kenny_r··on Startup School Europe Warmup
Thanks for taking point on this Daniel, I'll see you there!
kenny_r··on But why can't I send people their passwords?
Which is still true if you don't know their passwords but if you have their email. You can reset the passwords for just about every conceivable account they have.
kenny_r··on Spritz – read 500 words per minute without any training
I found the demo very impressive but I too have a large blue bar persisting in my vision right now. Very peculiar.
kenny_r··on Announcing gitsh: A dedicated shell for git commands
I prefer native system packages to tarballs, so here's a script [1] to generate .deb and .rpm packages using Jordan Sissel's FPM [2] (gem install fpm).

kenny_r··on Linus on "acting professionally"
I looked up the mail you're referring to: https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/7/13/132

My Finnish colleague seems to like it. I'm told shouting "Perkele!" is a great stress-reliever.

kenny_r··on Ubuntu 13.04: Getting Excited About Ubuntu Again
The HUD is activated with the alt key (by default). Holding down the alt key for a while reveals the classical menu. That's what you would do to discover the options available to you.
kenny_r··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HN
I'd love to get an invite, thanks!
kenny_r··on Tesla Motors by the numbers
That's very similar to Slashdot's moderating system, which I think is great.
kenny_r··on Linus as one of the top 14% most vulgar users on GitHub
> I hate to say it but Linus does seem—as one of the top 14% most vulgar users on GitHub—to be a tad foul-mouthed (with a particular affinity for filthy words like 'mick').

Is mick a filthy word? Linus probably often refers to a kernel developer named Mick, which then earned him this spot in the top 14%.

kenny_r··on Girl unaware all her pictures are sent to journalist
Don't Googlers have mailboxes on the google.com domain directly? Gmail has only been around since April 1, 2004.
kenny_r··on Copying is an act of love. Please copy and share
That distinction has been made by the Creative Commons licenses. Copyheart seems like a lovely idea, but it's trying to solve a problem that CC solved a long time ago.
