kenny11··on Polio Detected in US
The inactivated virus variant of the polio vaccine is still in the standard childhood immunization schedule in the US:

kenny11··on SEC issues more than $17M award to a whistleblower
They do:

kenny11··on Ask HN: Why is MS Teams so slow, do devs test Teams on less powerful machines?
I run into the incredibly annoying image not appearing problem dozens of time per day as well.

One interesting thing about being based on Electron is that they've made the bugs cross-platform as well - the image loading bug happens just as often on the Mac version as on the Windows version.

kenny11··on Why don't I have a blog?
There's an extension for Chrome and Firefox called "uBlacklist" that lets you do exactly this - you can maintain a list of domains that you never want to appear in the results of Google searches that you do.
kenny11··on Display-switch: Turn a $30 USB switch into a full-featured multi-monitor KVM
Yes, this is exactly what it is. Basically a KVM switch without the V. I've been using the display-switch software for months and it's fantastic. Using the inputs on the monitors to do the video switching instead of an external KVM switch means that you don't have to worry about finding a KVM switch that can handle the signal bandwidth required (in my case, three 4K60 HDR DisplayPort monitors, which is not a use case for which most KVM switches are designed).

This is the USB switch I use with it: https://www.iogear.com/product/GUS402/

kenny11··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
I get that for general-purpose searches this is a good idea, but it would be nice if there was an easy way to disable this when you know you don't want it - for example, for most programming searches, if I type SomeAPINameHere the most relevant results will always be those that include my search term verbatim. I don't need Google to helpfully suggest "Did you mean Some API Name Here?", which will virtually always return lower-quality search results.

Early Google was a breath of fresh air compared to the stemming that its competitors at the time did, but nowadays even putting search terms in quotes doesn't seem to return the same quality of results for these types of queries that Google used to have.

kenny11··on Brave and Firefox to intercept links that force-open in Microsoft Edge
Go to the Finder and choose "See What's New in macOS" from the help menu. Always opens in Safari regardless of what the default browser is.
kenny11··on Captcha pictures force you to look at the world the way an AI does
I think I got that exact same one, and had the exact same problem with it. Maybe reasoning that it was confusing the mailbox for a parking meter was how I proved that I was a human to it.
kenny11··on Observation-based early-warning signals for a collapse of the Gulf Stream
Banning ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons.

kenny11··on Microsoft Edge Experimenting with a Super Duper Secure Mode
Or maybe instead of trusted websites they'll move to a model where you need digital signatures on your JavaScript code to enable high-performance mode, just like you need to code sign Windows applications to avoid scary warnings about what they might do to your computer.
kenny11··on Everything you need to know about Covid-19 vaccines
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is covered in the article under "Janssen", the J&J subsidiary that developed it.
kenny11··on How You Wound Up Playing ‘The Oregon Trail’ in Computer Class (2016)
Another excellent resource is this presentation from GDC 2017 from one of the Oregon Trail creators: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdGNFhKhoKY
kenny11··on DOJ seizes $2.3M in cryptocurrency paid to the ransomware extortionists Darkside
That might be easier to believe if these ransomware strains didn't do things like automatically disable themselves on computers with Russian language support installed.
kenny11··on First Tasmanian Devils born in the wild of Australia mainland in 3k years
Yes, and there are even vaccines for them:

kenny11··on Compensate for Rockchip calendar deviation on November 31st (2015)
Pretty sure this explains the origins of the seven day week:

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

kenny11··on Commander X16
There are a number of hobby projects that aim to do exactly that (provide the instant-on, boot to BASIC experience of old 8 bit micros) without just being a recreation of an old system.

One that looks particularly interesting is the Color Maximite 2, which meets your specs except for the HDMI out (it uses VGA):

kenny11··on Email read-tracking is not GDPR compliant
But the problem with relying on tracking pixels to flag whether a message is read is that not everyone loads them.

I've had my mail clients (and Gmail) set for years to not load external images, and occasionally get "we notice you haven't been reading our messages so we're going to stop sending them to you" emails from mailing lists that I do actually read.

kenny11··on A billion for every chip-maker who 'makes in India,' sources say
In 10,000 years will it be technologically and/or economically viable to mine landfills for these materials? The elements are still there, potentially in greater concentrations than the ores from which they were originally mined.
kenny11··on Google is testing its new ad targeting tech in millions of browsers
It seems that the same argument could be made about hyper-targeted advertising. In the days where everyone was watching the same network newscasts or reading the same newspapers, they were also all seeing the same advertisements.

The trend towards segmenting people into ever-smaller classes to serve them more targeted ads is another cause of, not a solution to polarization.

kenny11··on The end of TenFourFox and what I've learned from it
Perhaps adding some prose along the lines of "Thanks for spending your time on this, I really enjoy using it" to these bug reports is the payment.
kenny11··on In 2020, two thirds of Google searches ended without a click
Same here. I can remember how refreshing it was when Google was new and you could trust it to give you results for what you actually searched for instead of what it thought you searched for, like AltaVista and the rest of its competitors were doing at the time.

I guess it's time for something new to do the same thing to Google that it did to those companies years ago.

kenny11··on Address Sanitizer for MSVC Now Generally Available
It's actually still sold by Micro Focus, although it's gone all "enterprise" and virtually impossible to buy.

kenny11··on GNU poke 1.0
I spent a long time looking for something similar to sift through binary files and found this:

https://www.sweetscape.com/010editor/

It lets you write "templates" in a weird hybrid syntax that looks a lot like a C header file but also allows control statements that can decode complicated data structures in a few lines of script. It looks to have very similar capabilities to GNU Poke, but with a GUI.

kenny11··on Ask HN: Why are we expected to train Google's NN for free through captchas?
I wonder about the quality of the data they're getting from all the random people training them. A few days ago I had to answer one by "selecting all the parking meters" and it wouldn't let me continue without also selecting a picture of what was clearly a rural mailbox on a post.
kenny11··on ‘Meme stock’ rally rescues AMC theaters from $600M debt
Reports are that Silver Lake sold their stake for $713 million, so they definitely got a decent return.

kenny11··on Ask HN: Why are 5 inch USB floppy drives so uncommon?
Advancement in technology, just like a CD tops out at 650 MB but a Blu-ray disc can store 50 GB on the same-sized plastic disc.
kenny11··on Europe's night trains are on track for a resurgence
I have the same problem with sleeping in over-the-ear headsets. The best I've found for sleeping on long flights are the Bose QC20 - the noise cancelling is as good as their over-the-ear headsets but the in-ear design makes them much more comfortable if you happen to rest your head on one side while sleeping, and doing so doesn't interrupt the noise cancellation.

Since they're cabled to an external battery box they can easily last through any flight, and you can leave the USB charge cable connected to an in-flight power socket while you use them to keep the battery full.
