kendalk··on Ask HN: Open source or closed source (business model)?
You might want to read this thread on HN before you decide:

"I am done with the freemium business model"

kendalk··on Scribble: The Racket Documentation Tool
Maybe I'm just not getting it, but why is this better than going with straight LaTeX? Pandoc can be used to convert LaTeX to HTML. So why the need for an extra layer of complexity? Other than a reason to use a Lisp.
kendalk··on Google is developing cancer and heart attack detector
I am so sorry to hear that! My mother, also, was found with a tumor that we didn't know about for a long time. She fought as long as she could. She never gave up hope.

Doctors don't know everything. There are ways to fight, even natural ones. Fighting with anything is better than giving up. Hope is very powerful. Don't give up. Keep fighting.

Best wishes to you from one who has walked this road with another.

kendalk··on Emacs Lisp's Future
You may be in the minority in terms of the total number of users, but most of the Emacs developers will have the same mindset. Terminal-friendliness is a part of Emacs tradition. The developers would surely keep the ability to run Emacs in a terminal.

kendalk··on StumpWM: A complete window manager in Lisp
Thank you for that file. I have thought about trying StumpWM. Your setup is going to be helpful.
kendalk··on StumpWM: A complete window manager in Lisp
I must admit to having wondered why there is not a greater use of Lisp in window managers. Lisp would seem the ideal language to use for tweaking a desktop. Xmonad (in Haskell) seems to have taken most of the attention of keyboard lovers and tweakers, but Lisp would seem to me to be a better fit.

> "The stigma against seeking help for mental health exists and is real"

Not only is it a societal stigma, but it is nearly a form of accepted discrimination set in concrete.

Within the past year some states have been pushing to start collecting all mental health records. There are people who really who really do need to seek help, but actions like that will only make them afraid to come forward.

kendalk··on Get on the CSS Grid
Prediction: Sometime in 2018 we will have a thread: "Ask HN: Is it finally time to use CSS grids?"
kendalk··on Huginn – Know when the world changes
I have a number of search terms related to a startup I'm working on listed with Google Alerts. I haven't been impressed with the quality of the links. They seem taken almost randomly from blog posts; very few relevant links showing any kind of trend.

This looks much more useful for identifying upward bumps in news cycles.

Thanks for the link!

The latest Ruby Rogues podcast discussed a new "Ergodox" split ergonomic keyboard with open hardware. You can build them yourself and customize them.

kendalk··on Ask HN: How productive are you?

Haskell? :)

Haskell is like a fine wine. It is meant to be sipped.

kendalk··on Taking a second look at free fonts
I used DejaVu Sans Mono until Ubuntu released their Ubuntu Fonts. Ubuntu Mono is a nice programming font! Sorry to tempt you...

The font grass is always greener in the next pasture. :)

kendalk··on Taking a second look at free fonts
I am working on a MVP and am going for an elegant look. I have the <p> in Georgia 22px but would like something a little less common. Georgia is a nice font but it is everywhere.

My current main fonts are:

      p { font-family: Georgia, Palatino, "Palatino Linotype", Times, "Times New Roman", serif;
          font-size: 22px; }

      h2 { font-family: "Open Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
          font-size: 22px; }
Has anyone found a font combination with an elegant, "classical" look?

Edited: for spacing

kendalk··on Ask HN: How productive are you?
Productivity can't be measured by hours because a single thought can change the course of a company, or a life... but that thought can take months or years to develop in order to be "thought."

For example, there is a running joke here on Hacker News about HN being a time-sink. I disagree. Some of the comments here have altered my thinking about startups. A single comment can change the course of a life.

Paul Graham's "Beating the Averages" has influenced how many programmers to pick up Lisp? One essay can change a life, or a company.

Productivity does not accumulate with X hours. It grows in starts, jumps, leaps and crawls. For those who work with their brains, accomplishment is not lines of code written, or the number of pages in your business plan.

Productivity is a result of thought, and thought often comes through a lost art called "leisure."

kendalk··on Show HN: SVG Clocks
Wow, beautiful!

I'm wondering if there are some uses for this, apart from just having a clock in your browser which is cool enough.

kendalk··on My mom is dying, and my bank account is dry. I need help
I lost my Mom to cancer in September. Cancer is a nightmare. My heart goes out to you.

They didn't catch my Mom's cancer until it was already Stage 4 and the size of an orange to grapefruit. She developed massive ascites which caused her to gain 30+lbs of fluid. People don't know how bad cancer is until you live it first-hand.

I was my Mom's full-time caregiver. It was hard. But now that I can look back, I feel privileged to have been able to be with her.

Do you know what the word "diaper" is spelled the other way around? Repaid.

> Here's your homecare

I read on the news this morning that the administration is proposing to cut homecare by 40%. I did a double-take when I read that. Unless the article I read got it wrong, a lot of people are going to be hurt.

I lost my Mom to cancer this past September.

kendalk··on Servo: Inside Mozilla's mission to reinvent the web browser
Ah, good point!

And this is Mozilla. They are used to putting out releases often. Firefox Nightly is at version 30.0 :)

kendalk··on Servo: Inside Mozilla's mission to reinvent the web browser
I am hoping Servo is going to increase the use of Rust. There aren't many resources for it at the moment even though it is at version 0.9. I would think that a language nearing "1.0" would have a wider community by now. Here's hoping!

kendalk··on Mozilla will put ads directly into Firefox
Not always. Steve Jobs was an example. You can have a visionary CEO who really cares about a product.
kendalk··on Mozilla will put ads directly into Firefox
The PRspeak bothered me more than the ads. Did the writer really think anyone will buy the "users at the center" bit?
kendalk··on Did English ever have a formal version of “you”?
Oklahoman here. We say "y'all" as plural. We also say "you all."
