Has anyone heard of the third world squat?

It's a joke from weightlifting forums but also has some truthful parts.

kelukelugames··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
I know lots of people do pot.

Don't forget the alcohol!

What about other kinds off addictions like porn?

kelukelugames··on Google Books wins case against authors over putting works online
If that's the case then maybe we can write a program that scrapes 1% of 100 books every day. After 100 days we will have 100 books!
kelukelugames··on Overconfident Students, Dubious Employers
I did a code review for my manager where I reminded him to punctuate and capitalize every code comment. I wonder what review score I'm going to get this quarter.
kelukelugames··on Worst Roommate Ever
I'm just going to post this quote about going with your gut from Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

"But one example of the unconscious bias that still exists was a Title VII suit brought in the late 70s, and the plaintiffs were women who had not succeeded in getting middle management jobs at AT&T. They did very, very well on all the standard criteria, but they flunked disproportionately at the last stage, and what was that last stage? It was what was called a “total person test.” The “total person test” was an executive interviewing the candidate for promotion. And why were women dropping out disproportionately? It was because of a certain discomfort that the executive had in dealing with someone who is different. If he’s interviewing a man, well, he sort of knows this person is just like me and he’s comfortable. But if it’s a woman, or a member of a minority group, he feels uncomfortable. This person is a stranger to him and that shows up in how he rates the candidate."

The wordpress article says academic meritocracy doesn't exist because teachers are biased. The author is calling it a myth to say it exists in our society. Doesn't seem like they are against an actual meritocracy.

Though I suppose it's easier to dismiss complaints about bias when we pretend those complainers just hate our meritocracy.

kelukelugames··on Depixelizing Pixel Art (2011)
This page is where all the fun is. But it's also very slow.

Do you have any examples where people are criticizing the concept inherently?

The people who write about these things always say they don't like when the word meritocracy is being used to hide bias.

kelukelugames··on Like Peter Thiel, Tech Workers Feel Alienated by Silicon Valley ‘Echo Chamber’
Maybe with even more detail. Can we do a survey like Stack OVerflow? If not officially then can I do one?
kelukelugames··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
It motivated me to make stupid github projects for Internet points. A couple of them got voted to the front page and one even got flagged killed.

When you say conservatives support Meritocracy do you mean like how Ivanka and Jared got jobs with the White House? When people criticize the word "Meritocracy" they are not criticizing the concept but the usage.

Are there user statistics? Would love to see them.
kelukelugames··on Like Peter Thiel, Tech Workers Feel Alienated by Silicon Valley ‘Echo Chamber’
This really should be the top comment. Tim Ferris makes money by staying relevant. And Peter Thiel qualifies as a political figure.

You don't think conservatives treat liberals poorly? Go on r/atheism and see all the complaints about living in a red state.

This is why I'm glad the D's are cleaning house. Sexual assault shouldn't be partisan. F Bill Clinton. Hilary was absolutely complicit too.

hahaha I can't wait for some Valley employee to write a paper on how biological differences between democrats and republicans...sorry, "average biological differences" causes different distributions.
kelukelugames··on The Mess at Meetup
lol, story time!

I joined a new team where the members never eat lunch with each other. I don't like to eat with co workers every single day but I do want to chat with them casually once in a while. So I organized a team lunch.

I'm not sure if anyone enjoyed it. =/

There are also a lot of counter examples eg. Investment banking, Uber.

Babies do smile at birth. It's a reflex smile. They don't start smiling for real until 1+ months.
kelukelugames··on An Interview with Tom Quisel, Former CTO of OkCupid (2017)
That's not true. Online is not infinite. The number of matches I had went from a dozen a week to maybe one every couple of weeks. Lowered my standards every day too. I live in Seattle though. Other cities might have more fish. :*(
kelukelugames··on An Interview with Tom Quisel, Former CTO of OkCupid (2017)
The problem you have to solve is convincing people to invest time in a stranger. And forgo safety. After a few online dates people learn that writing skills don't always translate to personality. Stunning photos don't mean stunning in person.
kelukelugames··on An Interview with Tom Quisel, Former CTO of OkCupid (2017)
I don't know if women value social status as much as they did twenty years ago. And men now care more about earning power of their partners.. In tech, I've met a lot of co-workers with husbands in less prestigious jobs.
kelukelugames··on Cognitive Ability and Vulnerability to Fake News
I apologized in a meeting yesterday when I realized I said something factually incorrect. I actually fact checked myself to discover the error. I wonder if that was a mistake. Given how our leaders act, I think we are more wired to trust people who never acknowledge their mistakes.

It sounds like we need to invest more in mental health.

I think calling Trump supporters dumb is a different problem from a poll being wrong. Rather are polls wrong if they X has a high chance of happening but then x did not happen?
