keithnoizu··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
Meanwhile where I live there is a single active imported case, and contact tracing being done for every he came into contact with directly or indirectly. Thailand and Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea etc. have also done a excellent job at controlling the virus and opening society back up. But all you hear about is Sweden and New Zealand.
keithnoizu··on The Battle over Dyslexia
I find i'm normally a little better at grasping how all of the components work together on large systems than others.
keithnoizu··on The Battle over Dyslexia
And it shouldn't really. Assuming dyslexia is the result of structural differences in how the brain operates and not simply that a person is behind the curve on reading ability.

If say dyslexia behind the scenes looked something like the difference between being left handed or right handed, a persons natural athletic skill (IQ) might improve their odds of throwing a good right handed pass yet regardless of athletic skill their outcomes would be better throwing left handed.

keithnoizu··on The Battle over Dyslexia
I was diagnosed, with dyslexia, dyscalculia and disgraphia, although for better or worse I also tested as profoundly gifted.

I think it boils down to, is there a structural difference in the brain that if studied can give insights into learning differences and optimal approaches to addressing learning differences and potential areas where a person with dyslexia or some underlying structural difference might have natural advantages. Such as the theory that dyslexics tend to think visual-spatially rather than lexically which could be advantageous for various engineering and business disciplines where being able to easily think about complex structures from different angles is beneficial.

Although the remedial approaches to addressing difficulties in reading may work equally well for individuals who experience difficulties for disparate causes, if there is in fact an opportunity to glean information on these types of fundamental difference in how the mind works that would likely pay dividends as the students progress into higher education and their careers.

keithnoizu··on Salaries Get Chopped for Many Americans Who Manage to Keep Jobs
Buying starbucks, etc. People who work at one cafe spending money at another cafe, etc. is the economic version of busy work. It doesn't really impact the countries ability to produce food and goods. Yet with out it the economy grinds to malaise that may last for years. That is pretty fragile.
keithnoizu··on Ask HN: Why isn’t visual programming a bigger thing?
I'd be happy with just being able to color code files, hyperlink inbetween them and insert a few images along side code.

keithnoizu··on A one-line package broke `npm create-react-app`
meanwhile I can regularly override even major release versions of dependencies in elixir with out breaking changes. dependency fickleness has always been a huge issue for me when working with node.
keithnoizu··on Facebook agreed to censor posts after Vietnam slowed traffic – sources
Internet has been all around wonky in the region lately. I'm in Cambodia but opennet routes through vietnam. Things like S3 buckets getting bps download speeds on the regular connection and jumping to mbps on vpn. Hours versus seconds of download time.

It still beats drinking samurai brand soft drinks
keithnoizu··on Oakland shows how to expand housing supply: tell developers they can build homes
Housing is actually a depreciating asset in Tokyo, with a regular cycle of tearing down and rebuilding units every few decades.

But the poor youth don't need to vote, they can just simmer on things long enough until they break out in riots. I mean hey massive social upheaval and unrest nearly got the FAP passed under Nixon.

Let the kids burn down a few small suburbs and the government will figure out something.

keithnoizu··on AMD’s Entire Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core CPU Inventory Sold Out in Japan
Selling out of inventory isn't a bad move if you seeking to raise capital or debt to increase production capability. E.g. were profitable and selling out at this price point and arguably would continue to do so as we ramp up production. Especially if looking down the road long term. In the short term it generates buzz, thus this very post here on hacker news, which isn't necessarily negative unless it is a prolonged inventory shortage.
keithnoizu··on Siberia: 18,000-year-old frozen 'dog' stumps scientists
Forced eugenics is obviously unethical but whats so bad about selective breeding in general as long as your going for intelligence, athleticism, musicality etc. and not country of origin.
keithnoizu··on Why are people getting worse at “The Price Is Right”?
99 cent arizona ice tea cost 2 bucks out here. : /
keithnoizu··on Apple Developer Documentation Is Missing
I had a high level google interviewer throw a tantrum because I didn't know the exact STL threading mechanism when I specifically said I could interview in elixir because it's my day job or C (not c/c++) because I also do embedded assembly. Like dude I can tell you the giest of how to handle concurrency management using multiple paradigms the exact library call on a specific language is just an implementation detail.
