keewee7··on Scala isn't fun anymore
The commercial entity behind the Scala language didn't do enough to make it more usable for Android developers. It has been downhill ever since.
keewee7··on Europe gas storage reserves – by country, updated daily
There is so much wrong in this comment.

>they refused to join the Istanbul Convention

Ukraine has joined the Istanbul Convention.

>because it violates their Christian values

Outside Poland the social conservatism in Eastern Europe has very little to do with religion. Russia and Hungary are full of irreligious/atheist people with some rather controversial views on minorities and LGBT people.

keewee7··on We Are Changing the License for Akka
Isn't Akka an important component in various Scala projects like Apache Spark? What are they supposed to do?
keewee7··on Group-By from Scratch
From embedded C programming to web development in JavaScript (and everything between) I often find myself implementing operations involving multiple data structures that would have been an elegant group-by/join query in SQL.

Are there any standard idioms or design patterns for elegantly/correctly implementing relational operations (like group-by and join) in procedural languages like C?

keewee7··on Sierra Club, environmental groups petition EPA to ban natural gas for heating
Many middle class European families travel to exotic far-away destinations by flight. It would be political suicide in Europe to make flying more expensive than it already is.
keewee7··on Google Pixel 6 still freezes when calling Emergency Services
High-end Samsung phones are the only reason I'm still on Android.

Google (Pixel), One Plus, Huawei, and most other Android phone designers/manufacturers have not been able to reach Samsung/Apple quality for the past five or more years.

keewee7··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
Kiwi Farms and several other Western far-right websites consider Russia to be a safe haven. They're correct in this assumption if they limit themselves to hate speech against LGBT people and non-white minorities.

However these websites are also blatantly anti-semitic and there is a lot of Holocaust denial going on. Russia has laws against both anti-Jewish hate speech and Holocaust denial.

It will be interesting to witness what happens when the Western far-right collides with their Russian buddy's laws against anti-semitism and Holocaust denial.

keewee7··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
Can you expand on this? Does that region and city have some special significance?
keewee7··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
There is no government mandated "sanction all of Russia" law. Most Western companies voluntarily left Russia. But there is nothing stopping you from starting a company and trading with Russian entities.
keewee7··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
Weird, why are they so shy about mentioning they're Russian on their website?

Anyways that Scottish entity will soon have some bad things happening to it. The UK authorities will come down hard on anyone who supports the shitty "Bully LGBT people into suicide" forum.

keewee7··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
They are now using DDoS-Guard.

The contact information for DDoS-Guard show it's based in Edinburg, Scotland.

I think they will have to look for another DDoS protection provider very soon.

keewee7··on FreeBSD on the Framework Laptop
Aren't most Linux drivers closed source binary blobs?
keewee7··on Investors bought a quarter of US homes sold last year
Real estate investors are legally required to rent out their units.
keewee7··on Investors bought a quarter of US homes sold last year
In Denmark housing built before 1992 cannot be rented out for profit. The owner can only demand enough rent to cover for upkeep and maintenance. However it's still a lucrative business to invest in old housing in the bigger towns and cities because the price is only trending upwards.
keewee7··on Lessons I wish I had learned before I started teaching differential equations [pdf] (1997)
How do Electrical Engineering courses in college deal with this? I think differential equations and the Laplace transform is something they learn on the firt semester or year. The dropout rate must be high unless they have found a creative and fun way to teach this stuff.
keewee7··on Serving Netflix Video Traffic at 800Gb/s and Beyond [pdf]
The sysadmin experience on FreeBSD used to be more opinionated than on Linux. This was before most Linux distros adopted systemd.

The reason companies like Sony and Apple pick FreeBSD is because they get an open source POSIX-compliant OS they can drastically modify down to the kernel level without having to open source their modifications.

keewee7··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
>I would have expected .NET's core demographic to be mostly CentOS and RHEL users.

Why? There is nothing "Enterprisey" about .NET Core. It's a perfect fit for both fast-moving startups and big enterprises.

keewee7··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
JetBrains Rider on Ubuntu/Mac is probably a better development experience than Visual Studio on Windows.
keewee7··on .NET 6 is now in Ubuntu 22.04
>Almost all .NET developers I know still use Windows even on cloud

That seems untrue. On the Cloud side every .Net shop I know from startups to government/enterprise are now deploying to Linux or Linux containers.

On the developer side 75% of .Net devs are on Visual Studio on Windows but a big and fast growing segment are using JetBrains Rider on Mac/Ubuntu.

keewee7··on Elements of Programming (2019)
This book proved that C++ code can be elegant and beautiful.

keewee7··on Don’t Blame Dostoyevsky
>This is not the greatest atrocity of our generation. There have been at least three invasions and occupations that are significantly worse crimes: the US invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan

That depends on what numbers you're going to believe about civilian fatalities in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen etc.

It is often claimed that the Iraq War killed anywhere from 0.5 million to over 1.0 million Iraqis.

However these big numbers don't make much sense considering that large scale aerial bombings and artillery strikes stopped after a month into the war and large-scale ground operations stopped after the second battle of Fallujah in 2004. The Iraqis then suffered a horrific decade of weekly and monthly sectarian terror attacks. However adding all the civilian fatalities from the US invasion and the decade of sectarian violence still doesn't add up to ~100,000 and not anywhere near the "millions" range.

Don't get me wrong. The people who started the Iraq War are war criminals. However it doesn't make sense to compare the most widely exaggerated estimates from the 10+ year Iraq War with the current UN confirmed counting of civilian fatalities in the 5 month war in Ukraine. If we go by confirmed civilian fatalities Russia is currently killing Ukrainian civilians at a faster pace than anytime during the Iraq War.

keewee7··on Denmark bans Gmail and Co from schools due to privacy concerns
But they didn't just ban GMail. The banned the entire Google Docs/Workspace portfolio.
keewee7··on Denmark bans Gmail and Co from schools due to privacy concerns
This is about privacy and only privacy. However corporate interests in the US will interpret the EU banning Google Docs/Workspace and Office365 as protectionism and lobby for retaliatory protectionist measures against EU companies.

Which EU company will soon get a multi-billion dollar fine by the US government?

keewee7··on An STM32 emulator written in Rust for 3D printers
I thought MCUs popular in both industry, college, and among hobbyists would be more readily available by now.

What is actually possible to get your hands on now? What about 32-bit ARM Arduinos and ESP32s?

keewee7··on Latest Soundboks firmware cuts the performance of their speakers by half
Soundboks users have turned many parks and beaches in Denmark into a living hell.

There are many other brands of portable speakers but Soundboks seem to attract a very obnoxious and annoying user segment.

keewee7··on Unity merges with IronSource
They also have many hardware companies. It's almost an annual thing that some megacorp buys an Israeli hardware or semiconductor company.

We used to have a good hardware startup ecosystem in Denmark because former Giga employees had more money than they knew what to do with after Intel bought Giga in 2000. However it slowly burned out for some reason. Maybe the 2008 crisis had something to do with it.

keewee7··on Billion-record stolen Chinese database for sale on breach forum
The Shanghai police has a unique role in China and abroad. For example the Shanghai police is tasked with spreading pro-CCP propaganda globally on platforms like twitter and Facebook.

There was an HN post about this a few months ago:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29654137

Someone posted a comment explaining a little more about Shanghai's special relationship with the CCP/PLA:

>Shanghai is a city with a unique role in the progression of the CCP and its global efforts. Also PLA Unit 61398 is in Pudong, the shanghai district mentioned in the article. Overall there's a lot of CCP/PLA-adjacent tech talent in the area, and of course the local police still ultimately report to the CCP.

keewee7··on [dead]
A quick look at international neo-nazi forums show they overwhelmingly support Russia and pretty much all of Russia's own neo-nazi organizations are represented on the Russian front line in Ukraine.
keewee7··on Biden must rally against a Russia-led UN ‘cybercrime treaty’
It's an unfortunate title for something much more serious than your standard geopolitical posturing: Russia and China seek to legitimize authoritarian internet control through a UN treaty.
