keewee7··on Ask HN: What are your best and safest investment options?
When asking these type of questions on HN and reddit you have to take the Doomer factor into consideration. Both places are full of people convinced the economy will soon collapse and we should all go into prepper mode.

World Index Funds are still the way to go n the long term.

keewee7··on Rogue antibody and mystery pathogen behind AstraZeneca blood clots: study
>low income countries have not been "overwhelmed" by Covid

India was completely devastated by COVID-19.

One reason was that India failed to focus their care on actually vulnerable elderly people and they instead had 30-something dudes demanding intensive care and taking up oxygen cylinders for themselves and their families.

keewee7··on [dead]
This is basically the same thing Elon Musk has been claiming for a few weeks now although he is slightly more specific in blaming Democrats/Fauci for creating Covid-19.

Have these tech billionaires always been far-right conspiracy theorists or did something happen in the past few years to radicalize them?

keewee7··on Life Is Short (2016)
Everytime someone posts the correct fact that average lifespan has drastically increased in the past century someone will wrongly claim that it is only because we got better at lowering child morbidity. They might even link to the garbage BBC article that only looks at data for rich privileged people who did indeed live long lives centuries ago. However the rich and privileged of old times were not representative of the general population.

Why do people so aggressively deny that things have been getting better in the past 100 years?

keewee7··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
What services do you use for anonymized phone number?
keewee7··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
>trusted third-party

This is something Signal should look into if they're interested in an alternative revenue stream.

keewee7··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
Snapchat's API call obfuscation:

This one about TikTok was recently on the HN front page:

keewee7··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
>The seller told me they scraped the data using the same set of weaknesses in Birdsite APIs that allowed the scraping (and publishing) early this year of profile data on 5.4M Twitter users.

Sigh... So many of the massive social media leaks are just people taking advantage of their publicly documented APIs.

I fear more services will stop providing public APIs and maybe even use constantly changing obfuscation like Snapchat and TikTok to make it harder to use their internal APIs.

keewee7··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
Discord is the worst offender because it only allows one phone number to validate one account.

Meanwhile I have multiple Google and twitter accounts validated through one phone number.

Is the leaker from India?

The sample includes high profile US accounts (who are globally known) and high profile Indian accounts (that are not globally known).

keewee7··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
It's unfair trade practice that Chinese developers have direct access to Western consumers while Western developers access to Chinese consumers is severely limited by the Chinese regime.
keewee7··on I still use Flash
IIRC many 2D animators considered the old Adobe Flash Professional to be one of the best 2D animation tools ever made.
keewee7··on Jack Ma flees to Tokyo
It's often negatively associated with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher but if you squint your eyes you will notice it's the economic principles followed by every North American and Western European country since the end of the 19th century.
keewee7··on Jack Ma flees to Tokyo
I don't know what you're trying to imply with that link. The vast majority of Taiwanese don't want to be part of China.

One politician's failed attempt at using fear-mongering about imminent Chinese to get elected does not imply the Taiwanese want to become part of China.

keewee7··on JFK Assassination Records – 2022 Additional Documents Release
JFK was a proponent of interventionist foreign policy and neoliberal-ish economics just like every US president after him. The US establishment had no reason to kill him. He was one of them through and through.
keewee7··on SBF scheduled to testify tomorrow at US House hearing on FTX collapse
>He's one of the largest scammers in history, if not the largest, by the amount of appropriated funds.

Not true. There are plenty of bigger scams. Even my tiny country (Denmark) has been involved in bigger scams like when Danske Bank laundered $230 billion out of Russia and into tax havens around the world.

keewee7··on Ask HN: What are your 2023 predictions?
Russia will end up with more land than before the war but it will be so insignificant that the war will be regarded as a failure both inside and outside Russia.
keewee7··on [dead]
According to Elon Musk the US created a virus that killed 17+ million people around the world.

Has he thought out how much he puts Americans in risk of attacks around the world by pushing that lie?

I'm European so I don't expect lynchings of Americans in my country but I doubt the rest of the world will show the same restraint if they end up believing Elon Musk's reckless lies.

keewee7··on Russia’s apparent resilience is being kept up by policy tricks and cash
One reason that sanctions haven't had an apparent immediate effect is that the Russian economy was already in a slow downward spiral. The Russian economy peaked in 2013 and has been going down hill since then. The Russian society has already been hardened by these 9 years of "hard times" and not to forget the much harder times in the 1990s.

Another reason is that Western companies stopped their sales in Russia while the West continues to buy natural gas from Russia. Short-term macroeconomic numbers will regard this as an improvement of Russia's trade balance even slightly boost their GDP.

keewee7··on Iranian Officials Asking Venezuela for Asylum in Case of Regime Change
Kosovo-Albanians (and Ukrainians) are probably the most pro-American people in the world right now.

Just because Kosovo is Muslim-majority does not mean they're friendly to the Iranian regime.

keewee7··on BlackRock 2023 Outlook [pdf]
BlackRock is an investment management firm that sells index funds. They want a bullish market but with just enough uncertainty and doubt that investors pick their index funds instead of hand picking stocks.

Governments and central banks have other incentives than BlackRock. For governments temporary recession is better than a state of long-term high inflation.

keewee7··on Nearly six in 10 US young adults live within 10 miles of where they grew up
Ten miles is huge in an increasingly urbanized world. Within a ten miles radius from where I lived in 2017 there was some of the most expensive housing in the world and ghettos with weekly gang shootings. However the city I lived in is objectively regarded as one of the best places to live in the world: Copenhagen, Denmark.
keewee7··on Fermilab/CERN recommendation for Linux distribution
AlmaLinux is highly compatible with Fedora and CentOS. You should be able to use the same solutions.
keewee7··on Fermilab/CERN recommendation for Linux distribution
How are these long-term support Linux distros able to provide LTS for the thousands of packages they include?

If a security bug is discovered in an old version of RabbitMQ do the distro maintainers learn Erlang/OTP to patch the bug?

keewee7··on Why We’re Suing NSO
What? There are NSO equivalents in many European countries. A certain Italian company was famously counter-hacked and run out of business by vigilant hackers.
keewee7··on FTX’s collapse was a crime, not an accident
@dang this comment is anti-semitic dog whistling.
keewee7··on Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests?
>It was of the order of $100,000

That was just their advertising budget. It doesn't include their hundreds of thousands of sockpuppet accounts operated by their clickfarms.

keewee7··on New GPT-3 model: text-DaVinci-003
"Write an Essay" tools. Some high school kids on reddit are already using it to "cheat" at homework.
keewee7··on [dead]
Yes. The author is blaming vaccines no matter how much he/she is trying to put layers of misdirection on top of it.
keewee7··on [dead]
'The "Died Suddenly" Explosion' is thinly veiled anti-vaxxer propaganda. Anytime anyone under the age of 60 dies these anti-vaxxers come out of their shadows and fill social media with their harmful lies blaming vaccines for the deaths.
