keeran··on Claude can now search the web
This was pretty much my first experience with LLM code generation when these things first came out.

It's still a present issue whenever I go light on prompt details and I _always_ get caught out by it and it _always_ infuriates me.

I'm sure there are endless discussions on front running overconfident false positives and being better at prompting and seeding a project context, but 1-2 years into this world is like 20 in regular space, and it shouldn't be happening any more.

keeran··on The worst programmer I know
I had my highest appraisals and biggest bonuses when I didn't do the job I was hired to do.

I was assigned to help team members on the lowest rungs of "performance" metrics. My stats went to shit.

Some teammates smashed it, others didn't. My influence and pay increased and nothing felt right.

Ended up leaving the best org of the company because I couldn't (at the time) understand what was happening.

IMO, looking back, as amazing and 'right' as this scenario feels (OP and myself), it needs the full support of the entire company to make it work.

keeran··on I Taught ChatGPT to Invent a Language
This is exactly how it does it. The entire conversation (including bot responses) is part of the payload on each new input/message request.
keeran··on Nvidia’s Implicit Warping is a potentially powerful deepfake technique
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cao0oy1CBg / https://lex.page/ :)
keeran··on The Alternative Genesis Block of Bitcoin
Yet there it is at the top of HN.
keeran··on Cryptocurrency scam: Man swindled out of pension and life savings
Ridiculous that this has a crypto label. It's the same game as all of the senior people I know who have been hit with fake anti virus, fake software updates, fake banking apps etc.

Start small and harmless, take a small payment, request higher access, get a screen share or account password. Game over.

keeran··on ZX Spectrum: Q&A with some of the folks who worked on legendary PC
That's weird.. I don't recall feeling like it was a money thing that I had a Spectrum, only that my parents had made the 'wrong' call on a 50/50 decision (though I will forever be grateful for that early exposure to programming!)

Trying to search for local prices back then is tricky, but they look to have been in the same ballpark (£180-200).

keeran··on Fake Amazon reviews 'being sold in bulk' online
Sellers generate fake orders for their products using real identities, actually send the product to those people, but leave a fake review in their name.

I've tried raising the issue repeatedly with Amazon, but I've now given up and look forward to the random crap I get sent almost on a monthly basis.

keeran··on Show HN: Using LDA to suggest GitHub repositories based on what you have starred

For anyone else who didn't know :D

keeran··on Docker Is Raising Funding at $1.3B Valuation
FWIW you can host your own GitHub

keeran··on Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide October 2016
Last time I tried this is it was a complete ballache to get iMessage working - I expect other services are similarly problematic. Is this still a problem?
keeran··on The Anti-Helicopter Parent’s Plea: Let Kids Play
Kinda amusing that it looks like the girl in flight is about to slam hard!
keeran··on Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft Create Partnership on AI
Sad to not see Baidu on there.
keeran··on Oculus Rift: Available for pre-order
That's how I justified the KickStarter.. boy has that paid off! :D
keeran··on Chemicals linked with severe respiratory disease found in e-cigarette flavors
The vaping enthusiast community have known about this for over a year. The popular vendors have pretty much all converted their recipes to avoid being the black sheep who still ship diacetyl.

I'd love to know why this story is being pushed everywhere now - is there a bill / legislation coming up somewhere important?

keeran··on Smoking: Quitting is so hard
I'm always preaching this sentiment - it is far superior, yet it seems like most governments want to stamp it out before the mass market innovation really kicks in.
keeran··on Ham or Spam? Gmail Not to Be Trusted for Important Mail
I can't remember the last time gmail got it wrong. So there's counter-anecdotal evidence for you :)
keeran··on Becoming a contractor programmer in the UK
Your consulting company employs you :)
keeran··on Virgin Media stores user passwords in plaintext?
I have a Virgin Media account authorisation password to identify myself as an account manager over the phone. Has nothing to do with any online login system.
keeran··on Talking About Money
The problem I have with this #talkpay thing is that it assumes everyone I connect with is in our lucrative echo chamber. I'd feel like a asshole talking about my income as a contract developer knowing I have followers who are really struggling to find work / decent pay outside of technology.

Conferences, tech meetups etc I'm usually the first to be championing developer solidarity and pushing the message that we can and should all be demanding more money, everywhere else I try and keep it low profile to not rub peoples noses in it.

keeran··on Retina Macbook 2015 Teardown
I'm not sure why this is an issue any more. It was a nice ideal when laptops were just PCs put into smaller boxes, but as manufacturers put the effort and investment into satisfying our demands for smaller, faster, lighter, I don't think the expectation of poking around inside them is reasonable.

We don't see people complaining about the repairability of their R-Pis, Chromecasts, SoC systems etc. That's the way hardware is going - because that's what we've asked for.

keeran··on Ikea's flat-pack refugee shelter is entering production
Makes me think of the Hexayurt project.

keeran··on Quadriplegic woman flies F-35 simulator with nothing but her thoughts
Firefox, not the browser.
keeran··on The Trans-Pacific Partnership clause everyone should oppose
It's been a surprising ride to see how on-point the story lines have become.

This week they stepped back from the AI briefly to look at how marijuana legalisation affects the criminal underworld and managed to tie in money laundering via online gaming virtual currencies. Love it :)

keeran··on Our first building block in tech for tykes: YouTube Kids
My son (3) became obsessed with watching these Kinder adverts, to the point where I had to delete the YouTube app and put him in cold turkey until he regained interest in the (brilliant) BBC CBeebies content.

If this app/service can strip out all of that crap I'd pay significantly more than I do for most apps. Easily.

keeran··on Don't React (Presentation - Use arrows to navigate)
It's built in some presentation framework that requires you to press spacebar to progress.

Annoying :)

keeran··on Attack Is Suspected as North Korean Internet Collapses
This all stinks (TBP included) of a media blitz to prepare the greater masses for further restrictions to their Internet abilities.

"Sure a content filter makes sense, there's a war going on."

keeran··on You Don't Need JQuery
I thought it was a joke site, I scanned the first example and saw the single jQuery way of doing something followed by n other ways depending on the browser / IE level.
keeran··on A Site That Teaches You to Code Well Enough to Get a Job
Did exactly this and now he's earning market rate as a Rails developer.
keeran··on What I mean when I say "I think VR is bad news"
Author takes a long time to get to the point - (s)he doesn't like advertisers, or advertisement-based business models.
