kediz··on There is no reason to cross the U.S. by train but I did it anyway (2019)
That is amazing! Hope the view didn't distract your ability to focus since it is so gorgeous.

Does the train have WiFi? Or you are just coding offline?

kediz··on Ex-Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz to Work for Tech Billionaire Peter Thiel
can you share some of events/incidents that showed the concerning traits you mentioned? Also, who are the shady characters he had associated himself with?
kediz··on U.S. orders closure of Chinese consulate in Houston, angering Beijing
It might be a common practice for consulate to do that: Russian consulate in SF did it in 2017 in response for an eviction related to "Russian gate" [1]

The U.S used shredder to destroy document in Iran in 70s but Iranians were able to piece back the document to get intel from it so I guess the intelligence community learned a lesson there.

kediz··on Starbucks pauses Advertising on all Social Media
In the U.S the beneficiary might be political ads? If this is the case, would it make social medias more reliant on divisive speeches?
kediz··on Ask HN: What are some good videos on real implementations of distributed systems
Most of the real world distributed systems would have some videos in some conferences: Spanner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfsTINNCooY

Chubby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqItueBaiRg

Anything Leslie Lamport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4Yp3j_jk8Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYX6UrY_ooA

Also the Distributed system course at MIT is fantastic. The labs are also great way to get your hands dirty with distributed system. The link to the class schedule is here: https://pdos.csail.mit.edu/6.824/schedule.html

kediz··on Ask HN: Which books have you read more than once?
If you like the Foundation series, you would probably like the three body problem trilogy. The scale(both in space and time) of the story is as big if not bigger than Foundation and the story is equally fascinating. Really good read!
kediz··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
It would be a case of LDD (Lawsuit driven development). The engineers would need to redo a lot of the infra and products
kediz··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
How do you achieve this technically? Monorepo would be a pain to break.

Or just break up Google into two but let both of them keep the access to the same repo? Then what would this achieve?

kediz··on Lyft cuts internship salaries by 50%
I remember reading my offer and there was a line that goes like this "only the CEO has the power to sign contract". and everybody else's offer are "at-will".
kediz··on Coronavirus: 'Murder threats' to telecoms engineers over 5G
As long as there are knowledge and cognitive gaps between groups and demographic, there will be luddite. This brings up an interesting thought; Is it in the best interest of politicians to keep the divide and gap?
kediz··on Labs for Rust OS – CS-3210 at Georgia Tech
I heard it is amazingly good. Here is another class taught by the same professor about security: https://tc.gts3.org/cs6265/2019/info.html
kediz··on Labs for Rust OS – CS-3210 at Georgia Tech
Actually all the professors in COC can afford them because they got paid very well(Full professors in COC has 200k+)
kediz··on 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests
It's 4/20 so I guess we should expect all kinds of things
kediz··on Google to Slow Hiring for Rest of 2020
Comparing Chinese tech companies with Google here feels like comparing apples and oranges and also "Chinese tech companies" is too big a entity to be compared with a single company. But scenes at Yahoo/Reddit/Baidu and other smaller ads-driven companies aren't pretty
kediz··on Google to Slow Hiring for Rest of 2020
I recently posted a Ask HN asking about the effect of how drop in ads money would affect Google/FB and someone did a quick and dirty analysis for their runway: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22884042
kediz··on Ask HN: What obscure items have you noticed shortages caused by this pandemic?
Human trimming kit is sold out too
kediz··on Ask HN: What obscure items have you noticed shortages caused by this pandemic?
Nitendo Switch is sold out across the world partially thanks to animal crossing.
kediz··on L.A. Times to Furlough Workers as Ad Revenue ‘Nearly Eliminated’
Just curious if Google has suffered similar level of revenue damage. If so it would be really bad since they got a hundred thousand people on paycheck.
kediz··on Google Open Source Code Search
Code search is a great tool! It really helps with productivity! But sometimes it is very easy to go down the rabbit hole.

I wonder if they can open source code search itself.

kediz··on IBM's Lost Decade

background: ChromeOS is hugely popular among high schools in the US

The team you will be joining will make a way bigger impact than the company.
kediz··on Russian Hack of Elections System Was Far-Reaching, Report Finds

kediz··on Russian Hack of Elections System Was Far-Reaching, Report Finds
Then de-legitimization might become a weapon of its own right...
kediz··on Russian Hack of Elections System Was Far-Reaching, Report Finds
If this far-reaching hack succeed, it might be the end of Democracy as we know it: Now the elected official has a vested-interest not to deter foreign hacking and the vicious cycle might go on.
kediz··on ThinkTwice: Stay Mindful about Blowing Money
That is wonderful! Sorry I didn't spot it earlier.
kediz··on Study: Immigrants and their kids founded 45% of U.S. Fortune 500 companies
The publisher of this "Study" is from New American Economy, a think tank "fighting for smart federal, state, and local immigration policies that help grow our economy and create jobs for all Americans."

So I don't think it is 100% neutral in terms of its view on immigrants.

kediz··on ThinkTwice: Stay Mindful about Blowing Money
Maybe add a suggested donation websites so we won't just feel guilty but find a way out.
