kbrwn··on Facebook Transcription Opt-In Says Nothing About Human Listeners
Has there ever been a time in history when a technology was so ubiquitous with so few people knowing how it actually works?

Cars, television, plumbing all come to mind

kbrwn··on Brain Drain Across the United States
It seems like most of the incentives are tax waivers. Georgia also has lots of land for films to work with. Do you think it would work for tech? I'm not sure if Atlanta has the clout to bring skilled engineers from NYC/SF
kbrwn··on 40% of Americans can't cover a $400 emergency expense
No surprise that low income consumers choose to consume rather than save as saving account with a low balance has no direct impact on generating additional wealth.
kbrwn··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers (2015)
There are plenty of mechanisms in the container ecosystem to address each of the problems the author states. Building software isn't all that it is cracked up to be and it isn't very fun. Often times build steps for open source projects are not well documented or the build process is inherently difficult to push a paid product. Example: nginx
kbrwn··on Ask HN: Did Facebook really do something wrong?
They could have banned CA from operating on FB much sooner.

They could have sued the developer in court to send a message to other bad parties.

They could have notified the users that their data was used improperly.

kbrwn··on The Boys Are Not All Right
In my own experience the modern American young adult male is overcome with an intense feeling of powerlessness. Powerless to change the direction of his own life. Powerless to provide for himself and future family. Powerless to effect anything beyond the virtual world without violence.

There's no easy fix. It's the result of a combination of economics, culture, power structures, and parental disinterest in the lives of their young adults.

kbrwn··on U.S. Consumer Bureau Loses Fight to Allow More Class-Action Suits
Democrats passed the law that created the agency Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
kbrwn··on EPA Science Under Scrutiny by Trump Political Staff
It feels like such a strange time to be alive. Even if you disagree with the concept of man-made climate change the distortion of scientific studies seems like something that everybody can agree is wrong. So much of science is funded by govt grants. The idea that everything must conform to the view of the current administration or it is not worth funding seems dangerous and economically limiting.
kbrwn··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
There were many popular netbooks before the MBA came out. Apple showed that there could be a popular high-end version with excellent build quality and now the market is responding with a cheaper model with the similar build quality. This isn't stealing. It is the standard model of almost every popular consumer electronic device since the 1980's.
kbrwn··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
"...I think it’s theft, and it’s lazy."

Not reinventing the wheel is a great business strategy. Everyone copies everyone in the tech space. Apple didn't invent lightweight laptops.

kbrwn··on Smartflix – Access the entire Netflix catalogue, region-free
How could this be considered immoral?
kbrwn··on YouTube Music is here
Google is all over the place with it's music services. There are 3 apps you can use now to play music on your phone Google Play Music All Access, YouTube, and YouTube Music.

It seems like 10 years isn't enough time for Google to figure out how to integrate the YouTube and Google brands together.

kbrwn··on Facebook Bluetooth Beacons
This could be huge for small bands and artists. Yesterday at a show in Berlin the drummer kept talking about the bands Facebook page and handing out paper with the link. If a band could just have a becon that sent out push notifications to the fb app it could increase engagement significantly.
kbrwn··on To Apple, Love Taylor
Can anyone at Apple (or perhaps formally at Apple) explain why this is the case? It seems like a raw deal that no sane musician would ever agree to. Imagine if when the first iPhone came out AT&T told Apple they were giving every customer a free trial with the device for 3 months before they pay for it Apple would have laughed and chose another carrier for its exclusive deal. I don't agree with the model of payment that musicians currently expect (imagine if developers recieved payment everytime a user used and app!) but if that was the norm I don't think many would just agree to put their app on the appstore for 3 months without payment.
kbrwn··on The End of College? Not So Fast
Completion rates don't matter as much when the content is free. I've signed up for 10+ of MOOC courses but only completed 2. I meant to just point out that if you consider a low completion rate a negative factor than the current system of easy debt for low income students has a similar problem.
kbrwn··on The End of College? Not So Fast
The end of this article describes a "future situation" that is actually the current situation exactly:

"Students with means of their own will have the option of attending a four-year institution and obtaining all the benefits that come with it. Poorer students will obtain their postsecondary education from MOOCs and their credentials through badges."

How is this any different than what exists right now? The availability of student loans allows low-income students to attend college but brings with it a lot of the ills of MOOCs. Low completion rates being the most common example.

kbrwn··on Elon Musk: Tesla Will Unveil Major New Product on April 30
“We are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people’s houses or businesses fairly soon,” Musk said during an earning conference call last month.

Why the speculation? It seems like Musk already said exactly what is coming.

kbrwn··on Why My MOOC Is Not Built on Video
Recently completed MITx 600.001 which had a fair share of lectures along with a textbook. The lectures were mostly just a rehashing of what was presented in the book but there was something about watching the code run that really made a difference. I also think that having "finger exercises" after a short video explaining a concept is quite helpful. Although it seems that could easily be achieved in book format as well. The live feedback after submitting code was what helped me the most.

At the same time as this I took another course on a different website (coursera) Cloud Computing Concepts Part 1 which was entirely lecture based. The topic was extremely interesting to me and I have moved on to the next course in the series but I do find the all lecture format with quiz based homework to be less than ideal. I try to make up for the lack of a textbook by reading the documentation of concepts covered each week but often times it is hard to pick the most essential material.

The edx platform is really stunning in terms of engagement and feedback from a student perspective. It is easy to imagine a course presented on it with little to no lecture if a strong companion text was provided.

kbrwn··on ‘Black Mirror’ and the Horrors and Delights of Technology
What did you find to be dumb about the episode?
kbrwn··on The Fire phone debacle
E-ink is what made Amazon a device company. Copying the Yota phone seems like it would have been a better bet then going with the 3D gimmick. Yota has a really interesting product but hasn't really gained support due to a few issues (there isn't really Android SDK support for e-ink screens) that Amazon could have easily solved.
kbrwn··on Putin: A Plea for Caution From Russia
1)The instability of Syria could cause the rebels to gain access to unsecured chemical weapons that the obviously incompetent Assad govt may have.

2) Some rebel groups may have chemical weapons and if they use them Assad might feel like he can use his in defense.
