kbatten··on Kindness, tech staffing and resource allocation
i think it's now "human capital restricted stock unit"
kbatten··on Hacker deleted all of NewsBlur’s Mongo data and is now holding the data hostage
script kiddie is simply a hacker term, it has nothing to do with age or even skill.
kbatten··on A Message to Our Customers
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
kbatten··on Shutting down persona.org in November 2016
It was incredibly easy to implement compared to other options and didn't require giving up a lifes worth of personal information to do so. I do believe that efforts like you are implying and others will push this forward to something that people will adopt.
kbatten··on SF Yellow Cab to file for bankruptcy
I'm not going to contest your experience because my experience with uber in the city was for tourism/getting home after a night of partying, not work. In my experience uber drivers took my word over the GPS every single time when I gave directions. I know that the driver can affect my rating like I can theirs so its in all our best interest to have a good ride.
kbatten··on Economic Inequality
My take away was the discussion about poverty, specifically "I'm sure most of those who want to decrease economic inequality want to do it mainly to help the poor, not to hurt the rich." So I don't think he based it on a false premise.

also

"When the city is turning off your water because you can't pay the bill, it doesn't make any difference what Larry Page's net worth is compared to yours."

kbatten··on The Same Pill That Costs $1,000 in America Sells for $4 in India
After the meth problem in america became rampant (and is still a huge problem in many places) it was hard to get pseudoephedrine so instead there were many drugs that just got me high (in a non fun way) but didn't actually clear my sinuses. Obviously this is anecdote but I think it is not fair to call out other countries without proof.
kbatten··on The Same Pill That Costs $1,000 in America Sells for $4 in India
Alternatively India has a lot of smart people and they can develop drugs if US companies don't. How much are US companies subsidized by both money and Indian scientists, and how would one determine this? Frankly I'm not sure where to go to find out the exact facts. I think you are right, but I'm not so sure anymore.
kbatten··on Lexmark fires Mexico factory workers demanding $0.35 raise
Why should humans exercise morality?
kbatten··on Why Very Low Interest Rates May Stick Around
Why can't everyone afford it, or at least middle class and above? The US is already the "1%" right? So we all can take a hit to solve this problem now. It may be politically unpopular, or even politically nonviable but it can be done.
kbatten··on BrickInstructions.com: Lego booklet site
PLA is easy to recycle, though as I said I mostly print PET. That does seem to be recyclable though I question the cost/benefit of doing so since the recycling itself has cost and it may weaken the plastic.

Personally I have a bucket filled with the scraps till I can figure out what I want to do. But I know I've thrown away far more plastic packaging than I waste printing so I don't stress about it.

Nevertheless your point is valid and needs to be considered as 3d printing becomes mainstream.

kbatten··on Google Begins Rolling Out Google Play Music Family Plan
Why can't you just create another email for these services? The actual email address is irrelevant for something like Google Play Music.
kbatten··on BrickInstructions.com: Lego booklet site
Can you give evidence to it only lasting a year? I print in PETG which is the same plastic used by Coke to create their 2 liter bottles. Even "if" it only lasts a year, the cost of the plastic is cents so I'll just print another.

I'll pass down the schematics which are more durable than even plastic.

kbatten··on BrickInstructions.com: Lego booklet site
With the explosion of 3d printing I would love to see what Lego does to capture this market. I can already print lego clone pieces. My niece doesn't really know about intellectual property, she know about mashing plastic together.

They can be the leader, but the window that they can take advantage of this is closing quickly. A 300 dollar printer id not that big of an investment and once you have it you can print a big item for about a dollar in plastic.

kbatten··on File Says N.S.A. Found Way to Replace Email Surveillance Program
The NSA either fights for the american people or it fights against them. Currently the NSA is fighting against me, an ameician citizen.
kbatten··on The Western diet has nearly killed our ancestral microbiome
Surely there is also instinct at play here. A cat raised in captivity still can hunt mice and if its released into the wild it could survive and reproduce. And of course there is the famous california condor story where they are now all either raise in captivity or decedents of those.
kbatten··on The European Commission is preparing an attack on the hyperlink
I don't know about the EU but in the US politicians to work with field experts, they are called lobbyists. This is why you have the automotive industry writing automotive law, etc.
kbatten··on Is That Really a Cappuccino?
My espresso machine was one of the best purchases I have made. I can have straight espresso or any variation of frothed milk and coffee that I can imagine. I use store brand coffee and milk and it is delicious. Its worth investing in if you care about it and I drink coffee almost every day, so something I think is worth investing in.
kbatten··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
If you are only an occasional user why are you even commenting? I'm only picking on you because you are an easy target, but I have seen a number of HN posts from people who first state that they barely use reddit, then go on to blast all reddit users as vitriol spitting losers. What do you gain from getting on this bandwagon?
kbatten··on Chrome Blocks Major Torrent Sites Over "Harmful Programs"
Shouldn't google block youtube if they care about massive corporate supported copyright infringement?
kbatten··on It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model and build a better web
I don't see this as any different than buying something from amazon though, which anyone can do.

Micropayments are a problem, but as long as you buy a few dollars worth of reddit gold it is more akin to buying a gift card than a micropayment.

The psychological issues are valid, but I'm not seeing technological issues in this specific case.

kbatten··on It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model and build a better web
I've bought reddit gold several times and it was incredibly easy. What specific obstacles are you talking about?
kbatten··on The US Intelligence Community has a Third Leaker
Hero is only as biased as history is and the US has written a lot of history. The US government already considers many military personal heroes today.
kbatten··on Justin.tv has shut down
Data caps seem fine as long as they keep up with technology. The problem is that even 5 years ago 300GB was barely reasonable and it is completely unreasonable today.

What I mean by "fine" is I would rather have a datacap and a higher speed that could potentially exceed the data cap if used 24/7 than a slower speed that creates a soft cap anyway.

kbatten··on Creative Cloud outage leaves Adobe users unable to work
I have a hard time understanding why anyone would lease a service that is vital to their job, or at least without a backup. If your livelihood depends on something then spend your money appropriately. Even if you did sign up for CC you can still have an older version ready to go in a pinch.
kbatten··on Suicide Prevention Sheds a Longstanding Taboo: Talking About Attempts
Prevention efforts could include ways to talk about your problems without being afraid that people would treat you differently or force you to do something you didn't want to do. There would have to be an absolute guarantee of privacy of course.
kbatten··on Gmail Overhaul Has Marketers Saying 'Ack'
I have had a problem where people sign up for stuff using my email address. Yes I can (and do) unsubscribe, but it is really nice that these are now pretty much all filtered out of my inbox automatically.

I've never seen a marketer verify email to make sure it was actually the requester who owns the email like other web services do.

kbatten··on Listen to AOL’s CEO Fire Employee in Conference Call With 1,000 people
Someone like that needs help, not a firing in front of everyone on the planet.
kbatten··on Amazon Services Hackpad
Every time I navigated within the site I got a popup telling me to sign in with facebook or google. Incredibly frustrating and I don't even know why I would care to sign into that site.
kbatten··on Frustrated with iCloud, Apple’s developer community speaks up
Were you using timemachine, and if so did the photographs get removed from there as well? No matter what, that sounds like an incredibly poor user experience.
