Distribution of Culture is way different now that internet enables virtual cultures to exist which have less physical barrier.

When +10-15% of work force is laid off it’s not due to boss key, but idiot bosses who don’t think ahead.

But on the other side Boss key do happen due to demoralized workers realize they are working for idiot bosses making bad decisions or being shitty leaders.

kaveh_h··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
From my reading US sales tax are only state level and usually much lower than 25%. Around 5-10%. Also 5 states have no sales tax at all.
kaveh_h··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
I saw that Claude 3.7 Sonnet both regular and thinking was available for Github Copilot (Pro) 5 hours ago for me, I enabled it and tried it out a couple of times, but for the past hour the option has disappeared.

I'm situated in Europe (Sweden), anyone else having the same experience?

Not a lot of them, but Trump accuse EU of tariffs because it has VAT. That’s not the same thing because VAT apply to domestic companies as well so there’s no real unfair advantage. You could make the claim that it’s still worse for foreign goods as VAT can be offset with VAT from supplier purchases, but that only works if you produce goods in the same country as you sell them. But US companies have even larger advantage already as they don’t have any VAT, so in the end the playing field is kind of level.

This doesn’t stop Trump from pressuring and squeezing and making false claims to justify his standing point. Expect an unstable trade environment due to tariffs and retaliation. This will hurt small businesses that have even more complex environment to operate in.

A lot of there ”investments” are probably in form of a credits to use on training compute from hyperscalars and other GPU compute data centers.

Look at previous such investments Microsoft and AWS have done in OpenAI and Anthropic.

They need use cases and customers for their initial investment for 750 billion dollars. Investing in the best people in the field is then of course a given.

kaveh_h··on Big Tech says AI is booming. Wall Street is starting to see a bubble
Demos Habassis from DeepMind have already spun off a drug discovery company based on AlphaFold v3 which is proprietary.

Others have developed Deep Learning based weather forecast models which much cheaper (orders of magnitude less compute), faster and more accurate than conventional physics simulation based models which costs billions of dollar to run.

There might exists companies which have already enough private, unique and valuable data that if used to develop models that can bring huge benefits.

kaveh_h··on Agricultural drones are transforming rice farming in the Mekong River delta
Why must the device be so cheap? Is the intent to have one serve each plant? Why can’t one serve many plants?
kaveh_h··on Building SimCity: How to put the world in a machine
Do you think people can learn something from simulation games that’s inherently hard to learn from mere language or mathematics?

Is it possible to create good simulation games of substantial global events and the subsequent possible outcomes. Some examples would be a pandemic like Covid and how it shaped societies differently based on preconditions and policies OR a discovery of nuclear fission that sparked building nuclear weapon (I.e the manhattan project) and fueled the cold war OR the realization and threat of man made global warming and the global reaction and policy making and many possible outcomes.

And if not why are they not feasible for games. Is there something that makes these types of events and their outcome hard to simulate?

kaveh_h··on Goodbye, clean code (2020)
As a freelancer and consultant I’ve seen this drive or urge for simplifying coding go to the extreme to become pointless or even very damaging at a larger scale.

An idea that sometimes popup in some ambitious people are usually centered around making programming easier or more foolproof by developing a platform that supposedly would make that easier and safer to build software systems within an enterprise. What these people seldom realize is all the effort that needed to build a good platform from scratch versus finding and contributing to a suitable OSS project.

This is what has happened at a client I’m working for now. An architect thought it would be a great idea to develop such a platform with multiple components like a runtime, a visual designer to create flow diagrams that are finally transformed that into code, integrations with databases and lots of other features based on code generation from configuration files.

After some years of development this platform have only managed to create hurdles for the only project that have tried to adopt it. The documentation is outdated and lacking, the extensibility is lacking, the performance is not great, there is one consultant who is still developing it and charges a fortune and other teams avoid it like the plague. While this has been going on other great open source alternatives have been developed or matured.

kaveh_h··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
That’s assuming frontends need to be ”developed” at all in the future. There’s a possibility intelligent chat bots able to generate microfrontends on the fly is going to eat our lunch, but what is really going to eat the lunches is a failing capitalistic system due too lack of demand for labour. I guess overall society is going to balance things out somehow, curious if it’s going to be a in a civil manner or brutal disruption.
kaveh_h··on Proof-of-Work Defense for Onion Services
My thought exactly. Would be interesting if they shared metric of pre and post level of DDoS attacks so there was some proof this scheme actually has desired effect.
kaveh_h··on OpenFarm – a free and open database and web application for gardening knowledge
This project could perhaps be adopted by Wikimedia foundation. With a good web ui for contributors to add variants and knowledge which could be stored in the wikidata knowledge graph.
kaveh_h··on Creating a search engine with PostgreSQL
Nice article, although the part on fuzzy search not being supported by PostgreSQL is partly incorrect. The pg_trgm extension and an GIN trigram index supports the use case of fuzzy search like in the example in this article:

https://www.postgresonline.com/article_pfriendly/169.html

This could wastly speed up query but with added cost of more memory usage and operation time during updates.

kaveh_h··on Immutable Data (2015)
This would be the case if you’re a purist, but you can be practical and allow physical deletions of certain record just for this reason.
kaveh_h··on Rheinmetall pilot project for curb stone chargers for EVs
In < 10 years or so we’ll have fully self driving cars. After some time there will smaller versions that can run on smaller roads even. By that time robo taxis won’t have to park in the central parts of cities but can simply park in cheaper parking spots further out or automatic garages.
kaveh_h··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
It’s been an amazoing productivity booster. Both in terms of reasoning capability and how it improves my context switching ability from one language and set of problems to another.

I’ve used it as a much smarter SO and Google for understanding existing code and getting suggestion how to solve some low-level problems in code as I’ve mainly working on fixing a lot of bugs (not my own code) and it’s in a programming language and libraries that I’ve got almost no previous experience in. It’s not always accurate but the amazing thing is that it’s somewhat steerable, but you need to have enough experience and understanding to detect subtle errors.

I’m only feeding it small snippets of code and sometimes we only chat about toy examples that are related to what I work on so I don’t have any major concerns about data leaks or hacks.

I’ve also tested it’s ability to do BDD, TDD, CI/CD and some more esoteric things such as formal verification with TLA+. My experience have been it works pretty good for any thing which have good amount of examples and related content. It’s actually a very good tool for learning as you can query it for issues you’re having while learning.

The only issue is it’s not up to date for leading edge stuff because of it’s cutoff time.

kaveh_h··on GPT4 is up to 6 times more expensive than GPT3.5
This is good mostly for improving quality of software and reducing technical debt. But not much good for innovation.
kaveh_h··on How Iceland is using GPT-4 to preserve its language
That’s really interesting as the as the word ’sim’ in modern farsi (persian) also mean cord or line. It seems according to wiktionary (https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/s%C3%ADma#Icelandic) that the Word has Proto-Indo-European roots which is the common ancestor of farsi and European languages.

I wonder if it’s possible to introspect or query the model and find out about the etymologi of words. I suspect more context like the phonetic version of each word is needed to make that final connection not just the semantic embedding.

kaveh_h··on My grandmother died at home, just as she wanted. It cost $145,000
You could also end up with some serious illness when you're young and in need of special care without which you don't have any opportunity to build that income you're talking about. Each additional person being able to contribute means another person has contributed to your economic wellbeing and a egalitarian society where people's opportunity is not lost do to bad luck.

I would argue taxation is only theft if the money is spend on extremely bad, costly and possibly corrupt policy decisions like US wars in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan or even the war on drugs. Probably a lot of these policy decisions are influenced by lobbying from various industries and special interest groups. Follow the money.

kaveh_h··on ChatGPT Plus
If it saved you 4hrs/day you could serve more clients if you we’re working as freelancer and therefor more than offset the cost.

If you’re an employee then use that additional 4hrs to focus on other things.

kaveh_h··on Tell HN: You are not alone this Christmas
A bit of algebra is good to know but more math knowledge is really only required if you want to work in a domain which requires it like Machine Learning, graphics engines, Scientific Computing, algorithm development and some other domains.

So I would explore and see how far you can get in math before investing to heavily into a specific language. If you want to learn one that’s useful in many domains and is easy to learn while focusing your studies on math my suggestion is Python.

It’s called taxation, in the Middle ages peasants we’re taxed by the King and the only thing offered was protection. Government services is a modern world thing.
kaveh_h··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
This is perhaps true of revenue tax. But for VAT You can deduct VAT of sales from VAT of purchases.
kaveh_h··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
You don’t necessarily need to enforcement at the whole region but at the perimeter where heavy machinery and cargo need to pass to reach customers. But since this comes with a big cost still UN should help out with enforcing such laws.
kaveh_h··on America is determined to sink Huawei
I didn’t down vote you.

Multinational companies are not bringing profits home. This was perhaps the best decision Trump made was to even the playing field and brought it down to about the same as most EU countries.

Europe is a much larger population but it’s not as rich as US per capita so don’t expect europeans to buy more US goods. I agree that sometimes the tariffs are too high. But the situation is more complex. VAT in Sweden is 25%, a Tesla Model S cost about 100k$ here because of VAT mainly not just tariffs. Many US products are simply too expensive for the same reasons and a Europea generally lower purchase power. Americans like to buy European luxury goods many europeans themselves can’t buy. Trade is not a single transaction. I would love to own Tesla or buy more american, but I can only afford iPhone not Tesla. And iPhones are made in China...

Nato has protected EU, but not against the refugee crisis which affect EU much more than US. US seems to infact increased the problems and is simply trying to leave now. US cares about mexican immigration but don’t do much to help situation in ME.

kaveh_h··on America is determined to sink Huawei
DJT fucked both US and EU when it started to create a wedge with trade tariffs and other issues. Instead of strengthening EU and US ties he weakened it and gives china more space to operate in.

China can play any games it wants when the rest of us are locked on making cheap political points by pointing finger at eachothers inadequate response to this pandemic.

kaveh_h··on Second Sock Syndrome
The second sock syndrome is perhaps never an issue if you have a real environment of collaboration, comadrerie or even apprenticeship. Just more yarn and code by yourself is not going to cut it for long unless you have an external motivator.

The chemicals which activate our sense of happiness more than anything is the feeling when we see our friends and family have breakthroughs and achieving a goal. It’s probably a bigger factor for the one that is trying to reach that goal.

This is perhaps why twitch is so popular, even in an activity such as gaming which has been made to be fun by itself alone, socialization is a force multiplier.

I can have a sense of this at different work places, people are so focused on result and not on the process that people stop caring of craftmanship and disciplin. In the long term it makes the company rot from the inside with high turn over and lost knowledge and increase of technical debt and finally a losing business.

kaveh_h··on The dystopian world of software engineering interviews
Face it, FANG companies are mega corporations. All that made them good in the eyes of most employees vaporized when they grow much bigger and they lose their culture. That means less autonomy for the new employees (how many remember mythical 20% own time at Google?) and less freedom of expression (James Damore).

If you want to be part of something special join a startup or at least a small or mid size company made up of people that actually values your whole skillset and creativity instead of only one aspect.

kaveh_h··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
One question to those who dislike web scraping as they deem it infringes copyright laws.

Given that Google scrapes LinkedIn public profiles and add data from it to it’d index and when presenting search results, is it then not discrimination that Microsoft tries to block HiQ and not google?
