kartoffelmos··on State of Terminal Emulators in 2025: The Errant Champions
vscode terminal came in at number 32.

kartoffelmos··on An Open File Format for storing the information from a forge such as issues, pu
I could imagine a way to use this to run a forge locally, no running web server needed -- just working with files on my file system.
kartoffelmos··on Less meat is nearly always better than sustainable meat
Animals don't synthesise B12, bacteria does. Animals cumulate it from eating food grown in soil. Industrial farming often require B12 to be added to animal feed as a supplement as they don't graze (as much).

Give this a second thought: humans don't synthesise B12 either.

kartoffelmos··on Deep Learning, Deep Scandal
Considering the capital burn rate here, I suspect that waiting years between iterations will be a hard pill to swallow for investors.
kartoffelmos··on Oxidizing Ubuntu: adopting Rust utilities by default
> Who cares about the licencing.

Well, for one, the author of the Rust based utils cared enough to change it (or rather to not re-adopt GPL, but IMO that's the same ting). Why shouldn't we care about the licencing?

kartoffelmos··on jj: a Git-compatible VCS that is both simple and powerful
We try to have a clean-as-you-go policy. Try to improve bits and bobs while maintaining the code base as a whole. While (IMO) a one-liner here and there is fine, it can quickly spiral out of control.

I usually keep an improvements commit at the start of my branch which I `--amend` to while picking away at the task. If the commit gets too big I submit it separately, to be reviewed in isolation.

kartoffelmos··on jj: a Git-compatible VCS that is both simple and powerful
It was after discovering/learning `git bisect`, I started really understanding the value of using Git "properly". Being able to pinpoint in which commit an error was introduced is really invaluable.

I `git cherry-pick` all the time when I graft a PR. Sometimes I drift and start doing something unrelated to a task, and I often want to push it as a separate thing. Cherry picking it into another branch is most often how I achieve this. This does mean that I have to be structured in how I construct commits while I work though. Drafting, crafting, fixing and maintaining releases is however probably the most common use case for cherry-picking. Some commits needs to be cherry-picked for other release lanes.

`git worktree` is a feature I've often heard being raved about. I've not yet been able to use it for myself, in out code bases, but I imagine it being very nice if you have it work for you.

Aside: suggestion to add `git switch` and `git restore` to your repertoire. I'm guessing you use `git checkout` for these commands, but switching branches and resetting the staging area are two _very_ different tasks and making these two different commands is a wise decision. Lessens the likelihood for errors, at least for me.

kartoffelmos··on Nintendo Switch successor will have backwards compatibility
PS2 backwards compatible with PS1, early models of PS3 was compatible with PS2.

This was achieved by simply cramming the older hardware into the newer. Quite a common strategy, really – I believe Sega did this too with Mega Drive being able to play Master System games (using a physical adapter).

Nintendo did the same for achieving backwards compatibility for Game Boy games on Game Boy Advance. Wii-GC compatibility was however achieved by the consoles using the same (but buffed) chipset. Gonna be interesting to see how they achieve backwards compatibility this time around.

kartoffelmos··on Ask HN: Why is HN often talking about PDF files?
Problem with docx is that there's no real way to _just_ view a file. I don't really want to spin up an entire word processor just to read the meeting minutes. I honestly much prefer a PDF to docx.
kartoffelmos··on Why Dolphin Isn't Coming to the App Store
Sony Interactive Entertainment (which I believe is the "Sony" he's referring to) too is an American company.
kartoffelmos··on Gravatar Is Back
This is making me imagine what a vCard powered profile service could look like… I'm not seeing anything here that vCard doesn't already support.
kartoffelmos··on Terraform makes carbon neutral natural gas
How will this address methane leakage, which is a substantial source of athmospheric greenhouse gas emissions? Converting Co2 to methane is not carbon neutral if/when leaked...
kartoffelmos··on The incredible shrinking podcast industry?
Do you have a source for this?
kartoffelmos··on Email Address Regular Expression That 99.99% Works
Except in this case "good" will fail to deliver emails to perfectly valid email addresses.
kartoffelmos··on New version of Monica, codename Chandler, is available in beta
I considered paying for Monica because to get this feature. Glad I didn't, I suppose. No word from the authors that this is being addressed, and I can't seem to find any mention of CardDAV in the UI...
kartoffelmos··on Transit Is Great – But It’s Not a Public Good
Public healthcare does not pass their "nonrival and nonexcludable" test...
kartoffelmos··on Visual Cheatsheet for CSS Grid Layout
> CSS Grid Layout is currently supported by very few browsers and this page may not display as intended for you.

As of right now, CSS grids is supported by 83%-86% of browsers.

kartoffelmos··on Tackling youth unemployment by growing mushrooms from coffee waste
Very simplified:

1) Make sure that the growth medium is as close you can get to being sterile

2) Make sure that only spores from the desired mushroom is "planted" in the medium

If done properly, the desired mushroom will outcompete the others, deploy its own defence mechanisms to keep others out.

kartoffelmos··on Show HN: Simple CSS Button
Pretty cool! Small thing: you should use button tags for the examples – you're losing a lot of built-in accessibility by using div tags (for instance keyboard navigation).

How does these handle being applied to anchor (a) tags? Some times you want links to appear as buttons :)

kartoffelmos··on Why WebAssembly Is Faster Than Asm.js
Apple has a chair in the community group alongside Microsoft, Mozilla and Google, so it looks like they are on board. Source: https://www.w3.org/community/webassembly/participants
kartoffelmos··on ReMarkable Paper Tablet
As for point C: I fully believe that the opposite will be the case in three years time. Just feels a bit... shortsighted. I mean, even Nintendo is going for USB-C in their upcoming device (and even Apple, in their own hamfisted way :P )
kartoffelmos··on ReMarkable Paper Tablet
I've tried the prototype device, and I'm very excited that this is finally coming to market!

That said, and it might be nitpicky of me, but the choice of micro-USB for charging is a real annoyance. This is a premium device at a premium price point which I'm expecting to keep for many years. USB-C for portable devices is something that I'm considering a must-have at this point. Will probably wait for the first hardware revision.

kartoffelmos··on Google Duo, a simple 1-to-1 video calling app
vector.im looks cool, thanks for that :) Will be following it.

But man, that is one hard-to-use (browser) client.

kartoffelmos··on Lightgallery: Electron and Node.js-based image viewer for Mac, Windows and Linux
The notion that "you could use the same application across the three major OSs" is the feature – the feature is not that it uses Electron. That it uses Electron to accomplish the feature is incidental.
kartoffelmos··on Skype Is Down. What Next?
https://appear.in is free and does not require any installs or account creation.

kartoffelmos··on Flappy48
Fun concept, but the physics is way off.

Edit: I was using space instead of clicking the mouse. The mouse click is way easier than using the space bar.

kartoffelmos··on Strange light on Mars
I misread "This could indicate there there is intelligent life below the ground and uses light as we do," Waring wrote on his website. "This is not a glare from the sun, nor is it an artifact of the photo process." as being a statement from NASA and not from some random UFO web site.
kartoffelmos··on Safari Push Notifications
Arguably, it is because the lack of browser support that makes WebRTC "not matter for everyday use". We would see a lot more use if IE and Safari would implement it. And not only for video conferencing (such as https://appear.in), but also for multiplayer gaming, filesharing, audio recording+++
kartoffelmos··on H2 {position: sticky} [video]
It's already implemented in Chrome (behind a flag, but it is there), and thereby soon in Opera. Perhaps even Safari. As for IE, yeah, you are going to have to resort to alternative solutions.

Then again, if implemented properly, the lack of sticky positioning should not break the usability, only enhance it whenever present.

kartoffelmos··on Valve's solution for Steam Greenlight's noise: A $100 donation to Child's Play
But then again, after the $99 is paid to Apple, you can publish what you make to the App Store (yeah yeah, we are all aware that restrictions apply here). From what I gather, after paying $100 to Steam/Child's Play, you have a _chance_ of having your game/app have a speedier approval process.
