kartD··on Intel Announces Knights Mill: A Xeon Phi for Deep Learning
I agree, AMD is working on making it easy to port CUDA[1], which still doesn't provide a strict alternative, but it's something

kartD··on Intel Announces Knights Mill: A Xeon Phi for Deep Learning
Not a very good one, I feel it covers up too much of Larabee's past. I think it was well established that it would be a GPU, but suffered from Intel getting confused about what it should be.

If anyone would like to know more about Intel, I think this AMA is much better

kartD··on Intel Announces Knights Mill: A Xeon Phi for Deep Learning
Nice, but how is this going to fit with Nervana?

Also more than hardware how do Intel's libraries compare with CuDNN?

At the end of the day ease of use and software support matter along with the hardware.

I love Bloomberg and WSJ!

You've misunderstood my comment, I'm asking for some good examples because I believe they exist and I haven't seen them. I don't follow regional and local language news, but I'm sure they have some good journalists.

And please don't give me this self-introspection crap.

kartD··on Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington to step down
Not to my taste, but I can definitely see why someone would like it. Still pretty good. Thanks!

We found ourselves not guilty.

True, journalism has been democratized, do you have any recommendations?

I seem to have difficulty finding them

kartD··on Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington to step down
All her talk of integrity, and yet HuffPo writes articles on Uber while she sits on their board. Where are the amazing journalists of our day? Where is the modern day Murrow or Cronkite?

On another note does anyone know any good Indian journalists? Or is the term an oxymoron :P ?

kartD··on Airbnb Files to Raise $850M at $30B Valuation
Well, depending on when and if the bubble bursts, we'll figure out who was swimming naked figuratively....

IMHO I agree with you, but if the market will bear it can you blame them? Cheap capital is always appreciated.

kartD··on Criticizing the Rust Language, and Why C/C++ Will Never Die (2015)
If anyone would like to see some Rust deployment, take a look at this page.

kartD··on Salesforce buys word processing app Quip for $750M
Incorrect on the return front. $45M buys a percentage of the company. According to this post (https://www.quora.com/At-what-valuation-did-Quip-raise-their...), Quip's last valuation was ~$376M, so a return of 2X.
kartD··on Coq to Rust Program Extraction
Cool stuff, you're work sounds really cool.
kartD··on Ask HN: Cargo like software for Python and C
These look good, thanks!
kartD··on Coq to Rust Program Extraction
Sounds awesome! What kind of equipment is this done for (if you're comfortable answering) ?
kartD··on Coq to Rust Program Extraction
Excellent idea in theory. Translating a formally verified system to actual application code is possibly the next frontier of system critical programming. A verified system along with a memory safe concurrent language should be able to avoid a significant set of common bugs. I hope to see some industry adoption.

kartD··on Amazon Posts Another Blockbuster Profit
Quick article summary

"For the second quarter, Amazon recorded an $857 million profit, or $1.78 a share, compared with $92 million, or 19 cents, a year earlier, as sales rose to $30.4 billion from $23.19 billion. Analysts were expecting a profit of $1.11 a share, according to the average estimate compiled by Thomson Reuters.

Amazon had forecast sales of between $28 billion and $30.5 billion.

Helping prop up results was the Amazon Web Services cloud computing division, which rents computing power to other companies. AWS increased revenue to $2.89 billion, up from $1.82 billion a year earlier. The unit appears on track to exceed Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos’s goal of reaching $10 billion in sales this year."

kartD··on AMD has put an SSD on a graphics card
Any opinions you'd like to share about using Metal? I can't seem to find much online about developer's experience with Metal, which seems bad...
kartD··on AMD has put an SSD on a graphics card
I think the main advantage is the GPU doesn't have to go through the CPU to get data.

i.e. the transaction goes from this: GPU -> CPU -> HDD -> GPU

to this: GPU -> HDD -> GPU

kartD··on AMD has put an SSD on a graphics card
CUDA mainly. It's fast (faster than OpenCL) and NVIDIA is really good with their software. CuDNN for deep neural networks is almost an industry standard. Nvidia understands software and markets better, while AMD sits on their butts for too long. Granted AMD always come out with a good open source solution that is always just a bit worse and very late. NVIDIA tries to create markets while AMD mess up and end up becoming followers. Shame really.

Edit: this is a good step though. AMD should be pushing the envelope and hopefully with Zen, they can actually realize some of the gains of HSA (which they tried to pioneer but it wasn't so useful since Bulldozer isn't that good)

kartD··on A dynamic window manager for X11 written with Node.js
I think it's great in the sense that you can easily make apps, games etc. which is good for getting kids interested quickly. Once their hooked, we can push them to some of the "better" languages.
kartD··on A dynamic window manager for X11 written with Node.js
I was a little angry with my browser so that was meant to be an insult.

JS (not node) is usable for embedded coding. An example would be http://www.espruino.com/. Newer boards that come on Kickstarter typically support JS since it's a great intro language for coding especially for kids.

kartD··on A dynamic window manager for X11 written with Node.js
The day 60GB of RAM is the norm. Just wait till embedded development shifts to node.

On a slightly related note, has anyone tried Thync (http://www.thync.com/). It uses tDCS. Wanted to know anyone's experience with the device?
kartD··on A Formal Verification of Rust's Binary Search Implementation
All of these look really interesting, I'll take a look at time. Thanks everyone!
kartD··on A Formal Verification of Rust's Binary Search Implementation
I actually wanted to know about the reverse operation. Can we get some formal verification and modeling software to generate Rust(or C) code?

When I used Uppaal in my grad school course, I kept messing up when I tried to hand translating my code from the model.

kartD··on David Chang’s Unified Theory of Deliciousness
It might not be similar but "How To Cook Like Heston" is awesome. It's by Heston Blumenthal who specializes in using science to understand cooking. Give him a shot.
kartD··on Nvidia CEO Reveals New TITAN X at Stanford Deep Learning Meetup
I agree, I think an SMX is the closest to a CPU core - it contains dispatch, cache, schedulers etc. CUDA threads are of course have important differences since all threads in a warp move in lockstep. IMO, all of these contrived definitions are just to ease in programmers into the CUDA/OpenCL model or for bragging rights (like how a Jetson has 192 cores!).
kartD··on Verizon nears deal to acquire Yahoo
Yahoo did serve one purpose, it was the exit system for a lot of almost successful startups. Hope that continues under Verizon, though I doubt it.

On Mayer, well eh she put her hand up and suffered. but then Yahoo was pretty much past saving. Hopefully, she's learned from her mistakes and moves to something more productive.
