karma_vaccum123··on Existential Depression in Gifted Children and Adults (2009) [pdf]
We do but they are awful and flawed...Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk etc...we revere the rich as if they were gods. I would not be surprised if John Gruber has prayed to Steve at least once.
karma_vaccum123··on Introducing Amazon Wind Farm Texas
They mention their existing solar capacity in the article. Presumably this will also grow over time.

Doing anything at sea would surely be 10x as complicated and expensive...Texas has wind and open space and roads.

karma_vaccum123··on Golang landmines
These landmines show that the Go language compatibility guarantee was made too early.
karma_vaccum123··on Having fun with Go's nil, interfaces and errors
I love the idea of a "read only" map (or any other type), but it seems it is just a side-effect landmine in this case. Yuck...almost strikes me as a bug as described in the article
karma_vaccum123··on Golang landmines
If only one could go back in time and fix the weird overloading of nil for pointers and interfaces...it is the one breaking change to the Go1 language guarantee that seems worth it.
karma_vaccum123··on Google's CFO Ruth Porat is pushing “creatives” to bring costs under control
Last I checked the average corporate lifespan in the US is 25 years, so these numbers don't seem abnormal to me. Indeed it is amazing that IBM is even still around.

I find it more peculiar that people think companies "must" (or even should) have long-term survival as a goal.

karma_vaccum123··on Mode Media shuts down, leaves bloggers unpaid
Anyone can call themselves a unicorn
karma_vaccum123··on Old Geek Jobs: fighting against ageism in the industry
Speaking as an "old" (46), most of my colleagues have truly rotted out. The typical HN reader will be given to self-improvement and curiosity...but outside of this bubble many others have to be dragged kicking and screaming.
karma_vaccum123··on Old Geek Jobs: fighting against ageism in the industry
I'm 46 now and holding out until I get to 50, at which point I fully intend to promote myself to employers as a token they can put in their diversity promotional material they promote as an antidote to criticisms.
karma_vaccum123··on Evernote is moving all its data, machine learning to Google Cloud
You don't necessarily sacrifice those when choosing a third party. We all apparently work in related industries...do you and your colleagues sit around and dream up ways to exploit customers? I don't, nor do those I work with.
karma_vaccum123··on Evernote is moving all its data, machine learning to Google Cloud
You are always partially in someone else's hands unless you happen to own a private, dedicated connection to your client.
karma_vaccum123··on Evernote is moving all its data, machine learning to Google Cloud
Agreed. OpenStack is a total dumpster fire, yet still companies like RedHat push it.

I narrowly avoided a long term (career-derailing) OpenStack assignment...four days in...oh, this is all based on OpenStack?...transfer approved

karma_vaccum123··on Trouble in the House of Rothenberg
So what. 95% of the poseurs doing "angel" investing are in it for the scene, the cachet, the parties, the "networking", the name-dropping etc etc. Rothenberg gave people what they wanted....a very exclusive club with ridiculous membership fees and all of the very visible attributes that let the "LPs" signal to their peers that they were "Valley players".
karma_vaccum123··on Soaring Student Debt Prompts Calls for Relief
> university is a place where people should go to learn about things that interest them and inspire them in the company of other like-minded people whilst simultaneously growing as an individual

As long as we continue to believe this, nothing will change.

Universities indoctrinate, lets not be naive. Most schools have little interest in widening the perspectives of students. They are on a mission to unify perspectives. Indeed I would say that universities are more responsible for our Idiocracy than television - graduates really believe they have become enlightened when in fact they have been programmed.

karma_vaccum123··on Soaring Student Debt Prompts Calls for Relief
Not only that, but "tradespeople" start earning right after high school. That four-five year head start is more meaningful than people realize. You could be making a down payment on owning your residence while your friends are still undergrads. Nothing wins in investing like being early.
karma_vaccum123··on Soaring Student Debt Prompts Calls for Relief
It really requires a rethinking of the need for college, how college should work, and how it should be paid for.

Most undergraduates have no real need to obtain a gold-plated degree. Undergraduate education in nearly all fields is well-understood and can be delivered adequately at low cost. This is why foreign countries that aren't wealthy still produce excellent undergrads. Only in the US do we believe you really can't get educated unless you went to an expensive and/or elite school.

karma_vaccum123··on Soaring Student Debt Prompts Calls for Relief
Its nice that you earned your black-belt in self-discipline, but it doesn't benefit society much for you to become a miser to pay for a piece of paper. We are in a consumption economy...we need you spending money on things that create jobs for others, like homes and cars.
karma_vaccum123··on Soaring Student Debt Prompts Calls for Relief
This will impact every other aspect of our consumption economy...home sales and even car sales will be impacted as working adults have to dedicate more and more earning potential to paying off student loans...far in excess of any real economic value these degrees have provided.

I hate to get all "Zero Hedge", but this really does stink of some conspiracy to turn the middle class into lifelong renters instead of owners. The independence the middle class once had by achieving a debt-free existence and owning their own residence is being wiped out, and as a result, the middle class itself will effectively be destroyed.

karma_vaccum123··on FreeBSD – a lesson in poor defaults
My least favorite FreeBSD default: permissions for CD/DVD burning.

I get the high-minded position FreeBSD takes here, but it is also a total PITA and it seems pretty clear that if you are putting a CD/DVD in a host's tray, you have console access.

karma_vaccum123··on North Korea defied world with nuclear test. Now it seeks aid for flood disaster
Problem is...North Korea is a legitimate existential threat to a key US ally (South Korea) and a meaningful threat to others (Japan).

We have fun laughing at North Korea but they are armed to the teeth and are indeed capable of turning Seoul into a cinder.

karma_vaccum123··on Facebook is imposing American censorship on the rest of the world
Why not just tell users that Facebook does not endorse or condone any specific user content? No one blames Verizon if someone uses a racist insult on the phone...there is precedent for users grasping how a common carrier works.

Of course this is all about advertising. Advertisers want to be associated only with dull, bland speech. This is also why network TV is so bland.

karma_vaccum123··on Facebook is imposing American censorship on the rest of the world
Lacking a "public" internet, users are always going to have their expression beholden to the standards of some private entity. Even if you self-host, your ISP reserves the right to define their own idea of "abuse".

Where on the internet can I be assured of protection against censorship? I can't think of anywhere.

The public continues to fund the internet in a variety of ways (not just the original ARPANET, but rights-of-way to fiber etc etc) yet has no guarantees of power of expression.

karma_vaccum123··on Iran’s exceptional reaction to 9/11 attacks (2015)
It is racist and hurtful in the same way calling US Southerners before the Civil War a bunch of slavers...intended to wound, but also based in fact.

Look at what was "Saudi Arabia" prior to the discovery of oil. These people were nomadic herders.

karma_vaccum123··on Iran’s exceptional reaction to 9/11 attacks (2015)
You are correct and this comments section (and it modding) demonstrates a fantastically shallow understanding of the Middle East that is easily addressed by airport bookstores.

Surely some of you know someone who has served in the US armed forces in the Middle East. Ask them who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are...

karma_vaccum123··on Iran’s exceptional reaction to 9/11 attacks (2015)
Please. At the time of the US invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11, it wasn't even a nation state in the modern sense, it was a crater that was periodically claimed by one faction or another. The US entry was as strategically useful to as many of these factions as it was harmful. The enthusiastic support from numerous factions for American intervention is well documented.

Likewise the same can be said for half of the states in the region, you can list the factions just waiting for the US Marines to come in and do their dirty work for them, and sometimes these factions include AQ. Look at Libya...we "liberated" it much to the enthusiastic applause and support of the same people we tried to bomb to perdition after 9/11.

We're in danger of the same mistake in Syria...the world can't abide the Assad regime, yet the rebels draw support from Islamists that are hostile to US interests.

We're not the good guys, but there are also no good guys.

karma_vaccum123··on Iran’s exceptional reaction to 9/11 attacks (2015)
Not necessarily true. The United States was indeed involved, orchestrated in part by the grandson of a former US President.

You're mistaking token affection and photo-ops for a real change in foreign policy. Honestly your comment just seems naive.
karma_vaccum123··on BMW Plans Board Shakeup, Change in Electric Cars Strategy
People buying an electric car are already in a mindset for experimenting, so they are good candidates for design departures.

BMW and Mercedes have lost their edge in styling, any experimentation is a good thing.

karma_vaccum123··on Be Productive Anywhere: Strategies for Better Remote Work
Embrace contrived progress meters.

I put every trivial to-do related to a repo into a github issue.

I commit routinely, even for small changes, with a short message.

These stink of make-work, but they expose my progress to my other remote colleagues.

Slack is an exception...using it as a progress meter just annoys others.

karma_vaccum123··on Apple Is Said to Be Rethinking Strategy on Self-Driving Cars
