kardashian007··on Introducing a new kind of Wi-Fi system
Gotta love easily NSA-dioded consumer gear which falls over under load, reboots randomly and doesn't play nice with standards.
kardashian007··on Linux Kernel Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
There are no unicorn solutions, however being religously blind to potential net value of fallible but potentially better interoperable alternatives would be irrational. Any rewrite cannot likely be accomplished in one pass (without some really smart code transpiler), but would more likely occur on a gradual migration todo list with a bidirectional interoperable language. The evaluation of such languages would likely involve requesting necessary features such as freestanding compilation, performance profiling/tracing tools and debugger integration, proofs of correctness and GC-less operation, among others. It's not impossible but it would need to be demonstrated that the perceived immense cost is significantly offset by the perceived immense value over "doing things as they've always been done."

Delpoyed boxes: ksplice / kpatch or run updates when available.

And consider mitigations at various tech stack layers.

kardashian007··on Linux Kernel Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
I didnt up/down vote, but rewriting in something like a performant, secure subset of Go/Rust/X and formally-proving correctness to remove many classes of errors would arguably have immense net value greater than the pain and cost of progressive/gradual rewriting migration from C to something with fewer dangerous corners and far less code to accomplish the same system behavior.
kardashian007··on Linux Kernel Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Seriously, two things: formal verification of correctness is sorely needed and a language platform which has complete, bidirectional C interoperability in targeting both kernel- and user-land which can be gradually migrated to one compilation unit a time and has much more safety, is more succinct, has C feature parity and no/minimal runtime performance hit would be requirements for candidates to change languages, but only after impressing Linus, lieutenants and contributors of undeniable value.

kardashian007··on Ask HN: How do you get people to use your product when you suck at networking?
TL;DR: mostly pull but with appropriate application of hustling

Networking isn't scalable unless you have something industry/domain specific and can reach influencers (top bloggers, users, etc.). It's probably better to work on appealing SEO, design and succint message in a way which automatically sells potential customers on its value. Let the product sell itself 24x7 so you don't have to do as much work. Then, once profit is coming in, think about a sales team and hustling others whom don't/won't self-discover. At the beginning, focus on schelping to solve real/hard problems, providing fanatical support to early customers and other things that don't scale; and eventually make the product experience so compelling they voluntarily spread the word as well.

kardashian007··on Karabiner – Easy Keyboard Remapping for OS X
Karabiner doesn't work at all with Sierra. There's some "new" project called Karabiner Elements is supposedly half-finished, but yet people keep donating hoping they'll get something usable soon. Not holding my breath and it would be completely new and will likely lack useful features of the abandoned one.

It would be more useful to more people to temporarily fix Karabiner and work on Elements later, but no, gotta ignore paying users and stick to "the plan."

kardashian007··on Netflix catalog size shrinks by 50% since 2012
I cancelled my subscription in 2010: the streaming catalog was pitiful and mailing DVDs to-and-fro was just too inconvenient.

It's worse than a chicken-egg problem because it's a triple-ended market: users, content sellers and content owners.

Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon, TPB, TV, theaters ain't the final word in content monetization (or lack thereof) and distribution (or also lacking). If say Netflix were to split up their business into b2c subscriptions and b2b2c fulfillment platform, more studios and others might opt to build their own marketplaces but use the fulfillment service... which strengthens Netflix's overall position and de-conflicts their interactions with studios because it turns them into potential customers instead of just adversarial vendors whom seem to want to charge too much for their catalogs. Let them find out how much it costs to build and promote a streaming subscription service, and then they may be more receptive to negotiating in reality.

kardashian007··on Never accept a counter-offer
Exactly. It's possible to make many tens of thousands more in mere seconds if couched right in those situations.
kardashian007··on Never accept a counter-offer
To clarify: it may come off as expecting mind-reading if hypothetical employee doesn't raise deal-breaker Problem A through channels first. If all channels are exhausted, then sure, move along away from a shop that can't/won't remedy underlying issue/s to a more civilized place that tries harder to make the work community as enjoyable and productive as reasonably possible.

Finally, two points: both avoid perpetual grass-is-always-greener-itis and there is an always-moving trajectory for both the organization and each contributor, best to leave at the right time to maximize effectiveness and rewards.

kardashian007··on California governor signs major civil asset forfeiture reform
I recall a Palo Alto nearly-always-happy, slightly-overweight, always-with-a-lady, Palestinian, neighborhood guy whom confessed PAPD took (eg legally stole) about $500 from him during an arbitrary traffic stop without a receipt under the guise of CAF. Whether it went into their personal pocket or the department team-building fund was a matter of speculation.

That's not to mention the littany of horror stories of innocent people traveling to purchase big-ticket items in cash or getting paid in cash for professional services rendered only to be legally robbed by cops looking to line their pockets and/or departments and increase stats at any expense.

CAF screams "mission-creep" beyond attacking low-level drug-dealers whom skate beyond the reach of the law by using kids to hold drugs.

kardashian007··on How Giving Up Refined Sugar Changed My Brain
One "shortcut" isn't equivalent or "the answer" to a series of comprehensive, corrective habit adjustments. Perhaps the issue is that it's "weird" in Western countries, apart from high society, physical trades and cardiologists, to favor unhealthy, convenience foods and unspoken disdain of almost all physical effort.

Yet another ungoogable language but seems neat.

kardashian007··on Your new iPhone’s features include oppression, inequality – and vast profit
Apple looks like it cares on the surface but doesn't do deep, effective due-diligence of its suppliers and subcontractors. It's pure cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias if Tim Cook cannot accept the realities of gravity and virtual-slave workers lacking sleep and committing suicide.

Plus, there are the related, complex issues of people risking their health and their lives to mine raw materials for electronics.

It's not just Apple, but industry-wide and each major company must be forced either by customers, unions and/or governments to not make the planet uninhabitable nor egregiously exploit workers.

kardashian007··on YouTube Changes YouTube Heroes Video Stealthily
Possibly as important as subtly-revisionist history, it would be interesting to see thunderf00t and/or Gad Saad reaction videos to the subject matter of the Heroes program, because of the likely obvious empowerment of hyper-oversensitized, arbitrary, de facto censorship this program would enable. Sure YT needs to clean up spam, crap content and figure out how to deal with neo-Nazis, Alex Jones' and perpetual machine "inventors."

kardashian007··on Is having a '.name' email address a good idea?
I used to do .name about 10 years but too many sites didn't allow "unconventional" TLDs and are/were hopelessly pathetic. Given that there are many more gTLDs and still sites can't manage a proper email "validation" regex, it's too hipster to bother with.
kardashian007··on Sugar industry secretly paid for favorable Harvard research
Fat is 9 kcal/g, while protein and simple carbs are about 4 kcal/g. And there is a pathway to absorb complex lipid rather than going through the effort of breaking them down.

The nuances and complexities come in because of individual genetics, state of health and a myriad of interactions between the complexity of foods and their numerous and unpredictable interactions with a constantly changing system.

In order to get a better picture of health and lifestyle consequences will require close to 24x7 monitoring of many parameters (quantified self).

So, for example, it may be possible to find out allergies and almost allergies, interactions before they fully occur and inflammation promotion/reduction properties of lifestyle choices. Add software and deep learning, and there are almost endless possibilities for health and lifestyle micro- and macro-optimizations.

kardashian007··on The OPM Data Breach [pdf]
Sucks. Consider writing a book / get in touch with theintercept on a new machine from public wifi. https://theintercept.com/securedrop/

FWIW: Someone I know whom worked for DIA as a sysadmin about 10-15 years ago recalled multiple instances of TS/SCI folks being fired for surfing for porn over monitored networks... career- & clearance-ending. Maybe that's the only culturally-unacceptable sin in that community, apart from making the org/folks look bad?

kardashian007··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
Rote memorization and low details education is good for creating compliant, easily-fooled suckers whom sign up to the Marines because they enjoyed playing America's Army or Halo.

Instead, we (all of us) havr to do the hard work in instilling courage, mistrust of blind obedience to authority and critical-thinking into those coming up to be less fooled as adults and more likely to become public interest lawyers, more involved in fact-checking and holding people accountable for their duties / behavior.

Standardized testing (NCBLA) is exactly the wrong "medicine." There is no quick/easy fix except spectacular teachers, parents and mentors that care to not spoon-feed, child-proof the world or helicopter parent too much because learning requires someone else doing the thinking to figure out why it's important, not simply being led through random motions aimlessly.

kardashian007··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
We need new ways of valuing, sharing, creating and utilizing human output that isn't solely fixed on the next quarter results.

PS: there is also an inherent risk of large demographics of idle people encouraging both lone wolves and mob mayhem. Busy people with friends, kids and what's inside vlogs generally don't suddenly become terrorists or overthrow the regime.

kardashian007··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
It's another sign of the global oversupply of labor and the inability to harness talents going to waste. Folks under twenty in the US are experiencing some of the very same pressures.
kardashian007··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
Japanese society has mostly memetically accepted the cancerous idea that sex and love are bad or not for them. It's a lack of individual courage and unreasonable standards which result of, or are the consequence of, soft population control, whether intentional/not, collective/individual and necessary/not.
