karcass··on The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1961-1964)
My copy of volume 1 is signed!
karcass··on Estrogen: A Trip Report
I mean, mostly, main counterexample is that Manuel_D guy who is spouting debunked TERF talking points, e.g. he thinks the Cass Report hasn't been shredded. I think it helps that there are a LOT of us trans folks in tech to represent here.
karcass··on Estrogen: A Trip Report
I lost interest in psychedelics after transitioning.
karcass··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
I got my pilot's license in the Bay Area and transited SFO's class bravo frequently. The region has one of the world's most complex airspaces (a B, two Cs, and a crap-ton of Ds), and SFO has a mind-boggling amount of traffic for an airport of its size. Based on my lived experience in that airspace, I think ATC did the best they could in a tough position, and I think that Lufthansa asking for special treatment is the asshole move. If they demand ILS in VFR conditions, they should schedule their arrival times to less-busy times.
karcass··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
IDK if y'all know this, but this is 100% due to kiwifarms/keffals. Of course the doxxing and swatting on kiwifarms is not limited to keffals.
karcass··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
It is not "less clear" how this applies to Kiwifarms. Their TOS says they "may" remove content that:

"Is otherwise illegal, harmful, or violates the rights of others, including content that discloses sensitive personal information, incites or exploits violence against people or animals, or seeks to defraud the public."

Kiwifarms doxxing and swatting is documented six ways from Sunday, and it's hardly just keffals.

karcass··on We’ve got a science opportunity overload: Launching the Wolfram Institute
"Still not sure which will become self-aware first: Wolfram Alpha, or Stephen Wolfram"
karcass··on MBONE: The Multicast Backbone (1994)
I was working on streaming video in QuickTime at Apple, made approximately the same mistake, and got a nastygram from Van as well.

Now I wish I’d kept it.

karcass··on As L.A. plays tech disruptor, Uber fights back
It's more that they don't want to be regulated.
karcass··on Not everyone has an internal monologue
Can confirm, have no internal monologue.
karcass··on We Made Amiga, They Fucked It Up (2015)
Small world. RJ and Dale are friends of mine. I never did get to meet Jay though. I know of Carl through Rebol.
karcass··on Sir Hiram Maxim’s Pipe of Peace
The Maxims were Huguenots (French protestants) who fled the persecution of Catholic King Louis XIV. Hiram's great-grandfather Samuel Maxim emigrated to Massachusetts sometime around 1710. The spellings of the surname bounced around a bit, some preferring Maxam, others Muxham, Moxom, and Maxham. I think roughly half of the modern descendants live in Vermont.

Hiram, his brother Hudson, and son Hiram Percy were prolific inventors, mostly in the field of armaments (sadly). Hiram was born in Maine but moved to England and was later knighted.

I am not a direct descendant but am in the (fairly sparse) family tree under Samuel.

karcass··on Sir Hiram Maxim’s Pipe of Peace
My ancestor!
karcass··on AT&T’s Troubling Plan to Change HBO
I dunno man. The Russians impoverished East Germany.
karcass··on Palliative sedation, an end-of-life practice that is legal everywhere
Michael Pollan just wrote a book about psychedelics, including the studies that show efficacy around reducing the anxiety of terminal illness. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/may/22/how-to-change-...
karcass··on How Wendy Carlos Changed Music
No mention of the Tron soundtrack ... I guess it didn't "change music" but I really liked her compositions.

karcass··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2017 – Show and tell
I wrote an in-browser CAD tool for theater lighting and sound design: https://drafty-app.com/. I have a partner who does that for a living. We've just hired (part time, 5-10h/wk) a tester and a salesperson.
karcass··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
The taxes deferred as a lien, but the lien accrues 8% interest. If there's any value in the house, it would be cheaper (at current rates) to refi and pay out of that.
karcass··on His Doctors Were Stumped, Then He Took Over
My wife had a tumor on her pituitary gland. Four different MDs came up empty on her symptoms. The fourth doctor ran the right endocrine system test, but was only able to conclude "it's not [her] thyroid."

It took me about thirty minutes with the test results and Google to make the diagnosis. I was lucky, in that I had a colleague who was acquainted with the head of Stanford endocrinology, who confirmed the diagnosis and found us a good surgeon. Wife is fine today.

It's anecdotal, but my experience with the medical system is that nearly all doctors see the same handful of things day in and day out, and are not trained to see beyond their expertise.

karcass··on Venezuela’s currency is dying
Just like, say, Norway. Oh wait, Norway has the highest standard of living in the world.
karcass··on Tech Jobs, Cheaper Housing: The New Silicon Cities
I've looked for tech jobs in Eugene and found virtually nothing. The only tech workers I know there have remote-work jobs in bay area companies.
karcass··on Why the Great Divide Is Growing Between Affordable and Expensive U.S. Cities
Rice or UH?
karcass··on Credit-Card Debt Nears $1 Trillion as Banks Push Plastic
Many credit cards have cash-back or other rewards. It's easy to see the dual appeal of the reward, plus a month's worth of float on the payment.
karcass··on Demon in the Freezer
There's no way to eliminate smallpox completely now that it has been sequenced, unless you can also get rid of the digital copies as well. It's getting easier and easier to print DNA and RNA. We might not be able to print a full virus yet but it's only a matter of time.
karcass··on Gentoo Tesla – T2 Edition
she is running in a chroot
karcass··on An integer formula for Fibonacci numbers
Hmm, I think there's an edge-condition bug. Starting with fib(0), its values are (0,1,2,3,5,8...) instead of (1,1,2,3,5,8...).
karcass··on Life at Low Reynolds Number (1976) [pdf]

karcass··on Dr. Memory: A Memory Checker Faster Than Valgrind
+1 for the Firesign Theater reference. Anybody else catch that?
