kaonashi··on China blacklists millions from booking flights as 'social credit' introduced
I think I’d rather live under something like this than the opaque, private fico system.
kaonashi··on Leaked Emails Show Google Expected Military Drone AI Work to Grow Exponentially
China doesn’t have the same (recent) history of ‘military adventurism’.
kaonashi··on Is Facebook Really Scarier Than Google?
Not at all; Google is every bit as scary. Together the two companies have sucked all the profit out of publishing.
kaonashi··on Amazon will launch its own delivery service to compete with FedEx, UPS
Won't use it unless it's unionized.
kaonashi··on U.S. consumer protection official puts Equifax probe on ice
Ah Republicans, they want you to believe the government can't do anything well, and then they set out to prove it to you. Remarkably consistent.
kaonashi··on Trade school, not 4-year college, is a better bet to solve the US income gap
Income gap has nothing to do with education, it has everything to do with power differentials. Education isn't going to counter the musical-chairs nature of the economy nor the outsized influence of a handful of ultra-wealthy.
kaonashi··on Why I left
If you're going to go to work on a ponzi scheme, don't be surprised when you end up working with entirely unscrupulous people.
kaonashi··on Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index
Bitcoin is the very essence of the free rider problem, it derives its value from illicit goods and money laundering and uses real resources at an incredibly inefficient rate to do so.
kaonashi··on Antisocial Coding: My Year at GitHub
I don't think it's about labeling people as being good or bad, but more about not letting things stand.

If you encounter attitudes from people that are hostile towards you, you can either speak up and allow them to correct themselves (or double-down) or be silent and give your tacit approval.

kaonashi··on Etihad allows flyers to bid to keep adjacent seats empty
Don't think there's anything wrong with markets per se, but implementation details are important.

Markets where some players have considerably more coercive power than others don't tend to produce good outcomes.

kaonashi··on Etihad allows flyers to bid to keep adjacent seats empty
That's how the financial arrangements work out, but those are quite malleable.

Planes are perfectly capable of flying without first class sections.

kaonashi··on Etihad allows flyers to bid to keep adjacent seats empty
Yes. Markets are a means, not an ends. When markets undermine basic fairness, they are gross.
kaonashi··on Why Grenfell Tower Burned: Regulators Put Cost Before Safety
Paying in financial terms is just scorekeeping. Paying in real terms is raw materials, labor, etc.

What you're saying becomes true when the latter is in short supply, but when the former is in short supply, something else is happening.

kaonashi··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2014)
That depends entirely on the level of understanding.

Recognizing the harmony underneath a line isn't something a casual listener is going to do, but is essential for a musician who is trying to communicate with other musicians in real-time.

kaonashi··on Developers who use spaces make more money than those who use tabs
Anything more than two spaces is a waste of precious screen real-estate.
kaonashi··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2014)
Music is language.

Music 'theory' is somewhat akin to linguistics (or language subjects). It can help you dissect and understand how things work in an abstract sense, but when it comes to actually talking (or playing music), you're operating in a different mindset.

The people who rely on music theory are non-experts in the same way that the people who rely on language class to speak are non-native speakers.

kaonashi··on The Old Are Eating the Young
I liked this piece which touches on many of these issues: http://www.ianwelsh.net/the-basic-psychological-structure-of...
kaonashi··on The Old Are Eating the Young
More like the rich are eating the poor.
kaonashi··on Learning Node.js and React while building a product
bind is useful as a curry that's built-in, but I always pass `null` as the first argument.

not a huge fan of the `new` keyword in js; it's difficult to mock and there are better options (Object.create/freeze e.g.)

kaonashi··on Why Aren’t American Teenagers Working Anymore?
If you acknowledge a political problem, the next logical step is proposing a political solution.

If you are ideologically incapable of agreeing with the latter, it will affect your ability to recognize the former.

kaonashi··on Moom removed from sale due to patent violation claim
A person who wants to make money.
kaonashi··on Student Debt Giant Navient to Borrowers: You’re on Your Own
They presumably have a charter to operate from a government that is supposedly by and of the people (all chuckling aside). That type of ideology is cancerous (it uses the resources of a host to replicate itself without regard to the host's well-being) to a social system.
kaonashi··on A Few Billionaires Are Turning Medical Philanthropy on Its Head
This seems incredibly inefficient. Medical research should not be driven this much by people who got lucky in unrelated fields.
kaonashi··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
I guess throwing a million kids in prison is cool then.
kaonashi··on Ask HN: Tired of trying to catch the JavaScript train
Know enough about programming that learning the n+1th framework isn't a particularly high bar to cross.
kaonashi··on Music Theory: An Education from First Principles
Tension & resolution a much better framework to understand. But not all music takes advantage.
kaonashi··on The CIA Is Preparing for a Major Cyberattack Against Russia
This is what happens when you believe your own bullshit.
kaonashi··on Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf Steps Down
I'll save my you go girl for when he's in jail.
kaonashi··on N.S.A. Contractor Arrested in Possible New Theft of Secrets
Different set of rules.
kaonashi··on Why do private military contractors stay in politically-unstable places?
Because those are the areas they want to destabilize to drum up work.
