kant_adorn_arts··on Ask HN: Is anyone working on anything cool in remote schooling/learning?
I think the technology is there to facilitate online learning. The teacher training and practices are another thing altogether. So a big need for basic computing education for all!
kant_adorn_arts··on How Great Is the Great Resignation? A Primer on Labor Turnover Data Sources
Thank you for the numbers. To me it looks that there is not really a 'great resignation'.
kant_adorn_arts··on TikTok shares your data more than any other app and it’s unclear where it goes
I've seen more advertisments for major brand products, targetted at kids through Tik Tok than I have seen political propoganda. If anything, Tik Tok just reinforces the current "western" status quo than anything else. It probably reinforces what ever the advertisers in any country can pay for.
kant_adorn_arts··on TikTok shares your data more than any other app and it’s unclear where it goes
And this is where the conversation derails - when someone asks for evidence.
kant_adorn_arts··on A personal policy to treat all email responses like SMS text messages
I've developed a new policy of emailing companies from a "no-reply" email address.
kant_adorn_arts··on Ask HN: Does Anyone else working in a crypto company feel this is all a scam?
It's a serious question. Many people question whether their industry is 'good'. People such as accountants and some lawyers. But that doesn't make them 'bad people'. I am saying that how they spend their money is important.
kant_adorn_arts··on Ask HN: Does Anyone else working in a crypto company feel this is all a scam?
The ting is, money is all a scam. This is just new money. So what else do your work friends / bosses do? Are they into hookers and crack? Or do they help out in the soup kitchen on weekends and read to their grandmothers?
kant_adorn_arts··on Starlink lost 40 satellites to a geomagnetic storm
or is it not a biofuel? are they using the Sabatier reaction so they just need energy input (could be solar)?
kant_adorn_arts··on Phenethylamines I have feared and loathed (2020)
There is, its the first half of PIHKaL. It about the experiences and the society, not the chemistry. The second half of the book is the chemistry. Often in free dls they dont include the first half.
kant_adorn_arts··on Why is the Zoom app listening on my microphone when not in a meeting?
My practice is that if I'm paid, I'll use company software. In the real world (my own time)... not a chance
kant_adorn_arts··on Starlink lost 40 satellites to a geomagnetic storm
Is the manufacture of biofuels actually carbon neutral? What about the massive deforestation of Indonesia - caused by Germany's biofuel mandate?
kant_adorn_arts··on Starlink lost 40 satellites to a geomagnetic storm
I think it is worth having a conversation about the actual numbers for carbon cost for launches, vs cost of other internet deployment technologies. Starlink is really cool but I want to know if I'm a fanatic or making rational decisions.
kant_adorn_arts··on The EARN IT act will ban LGBT-related content and discussions on the internet
Though it purports to address some of society’s worst crimes, in reality, the EARN It Act will do far more harm than good. It will jeopardize the privacy of every American, fundamentally alter the freedom of our online communications, and, potentially, undermine the very prosecutions it seeks to enable. https://www.aclu.org/letter/aclu-opposition-s-3398-earn-it-a...

>"Upgrade Treadmill" is a very nice way to put it

I think "Red Queen Race" is the term from philosophy I'd use - the faster you run (from the Red Queen in Alice) the more you stay in the same place

"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else—if you run very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."
"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" https://www.gutenberg.org/files/12/12-h/12-h.htm via https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Queen%27s_race
kant_adorn_arts··on My bank asks me whereabouts of Syrian Refugees to release my funds
> fault is it? Bad software that lacks basic NLP? Compliance officers who don't understand English? Isn't this a bit discriminatory?

It is the fault of an AI doing its job, and a bank saving money rather than providing customer service.

kant_adorn_arts··on Ask HN: Is mental illness an ad-targeting category?
> * credit card billed for telehealth * short text journal on dropbox * friends may have discussed me/topic in their chats * a friend asked on Messenger why I disappeared, I said something like "I might have schizophrenia. Some violent situations happened and I'm struggling now."

All are potential sources of 'ad revenue'. When I was having a long distance relationship, every site tried to sell me 'Russian Brides' etc, it was highly offensive but it went away - I also quit certain sites and mail/messenger and now always UBlock everything

kant_adorn_arts··on Cassowary – Run Windows Apps on Linux using a VM as if they were native apps
MIGHT kill you, if it has its babies with it. But lets hope they don't get a load of Jet Li movies to practice with.
kant_adorn_arts··on Forget about teaching kids to code
They talk al ot about "coding" at primary school, but what they mean is making the turtle follow simple instructions - inputed via tablet. These lessons are teaching children how to use technology, not how to be coders, makers or engineers. We will end up with a lot of kids pushing buttons, not with a lot of engineers. IMHO teach kids to use a keyboard first and get them out of these walled garden button pressing labyrinths.
kant_adorn_arts··on Show HN: I developed a website to find books similar to my kid's favorite
great idea - but I think there needs to be much more refinement. On the front page when I landed there were all kinds of books, like "Trumped" which is not a kids book. So maybe look at the landing page to fit your genre. Then on a search for "Tintin" I get "Television as an Instrument of Terror" which in this case is probably not relevant. Relevant content did come up also "Rick Steins Belgium", Tintin books and a biography of Herge.

I like the ability to read the book in the pop up.

So great idea, but is this a allbooksearch engine for anybody, or a kids book site?

kant_adorn_arts··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
What a great website. I'd been thinking of how to find such info. We buy lots of kids games, and this is a great 'cheat sheet'. It is great that you spell out the dark patterns.

Who reviews the games? Upfront, it seems like they have done an excellent job.
