kangnkodos··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
No matter how you word it, your manager will be justifiably upset. There's really nothing you can do, except explain why this next move is better for you personally, and keep it to a minimum.

You should expect this move may damage your relationship with your manager permanently, but that's life in the big city. You have to do what's right for you, not what's best for your manager.

kangnkodos··on Ask HN: Is it okay to resign in six months?
I would personally never do this. If you stay, it will be different. Everyone, especially your boss will think of you as someone who is about to leave. That's not a good thing.

It's ironic, because anyone could leave for a better job at any time. But actually going through the negotiation/threatening to leave makes it more real.

kangnkodos··on My Reverse College Application
Did he really put "Stanford" into his common app essay? If so, that explains why all the other top colleges rejected him.
kangnkodos··on Compile-Time DI vs. Run-Time DI
DI is Dependency Injection.
kangnkodos··on Do people become happier after 40?
Maybe unhappy people who are 40 and older are more likely to die?
kangnkodos··on The Saltiest Users on HN
Defining saltiest by counting salty words has some serious limitations. #2 on the "Total Overall Score" list, merricksb, only points out reposts, and politely points users to the original post. merricksb's only sin is using the words "discuss" and "discussed". Maybe those are considered salty because "discussed" sounds like "disgust"?
kangnkodos··on Lessons from the Long Depression
I agree that if the government only discouraged rent seeking, that would be an improvement. The article shows how the government is encouraging rent seeking.
kangnkodos··on Lessons from the Long Depression
The author refers to creating economic opportunities as making watering holes. In the Florida everglades, each alligator makes a watering hole in the flat, hard limestone ground. I don't know how big the holes are. About 20 feet across and 6 feet deep? The alligator mostly lives in it for several years. The hole fills with water when it rains, and tends to stay full of water during the dry season. This is a huge benefit to all animals around it. And of course, the alligator benefits by occasionally eating one of the visitors, but fewer than you might think. But even with the alligator eating, making the watering hole is a huge net benefit to the ecosystem as a whole.

I think the question boils down to, "How can the government encourage the creation of new job-creating watering holes, instead of pushing policies which increase the rent of existing watering holes?"

kangnkodos··on Death by PowerPoint: The slide that killed seven people
During that final Columbia flight, I remember reading a short news story on the internet on the foam falling off. It even had a short video of the foam falling off. (Somewhat of a novelty way back in 2003.) I watched that video several times.

I remember being concerned, but confident that NASA would figure it out.

Then when I saw the headline that Columbia didn't land, I remember immediately thinking, "On no! The foam!". I also remember being puzzled that none of the news stories after the crash mentioned the foam for a long time.

I've tried to go back and find that news story, but I have never been able to find it.

kangnkodos··on A surprisingly arcane little Unix shell pipeline example
Here's a cheat sheet which should cover the most common situations.

Send stdout to a file.

ls myFileWhichExists > myStdLog

- or -

ls myFileWhichExists 1> myStdLog

Send stderr to a file.

ls myFileWhichDoesNotExist 2> myErrLog

Send stdout to one file and stderr to a different file.

ls myFileWhichExists myFileWhichDoesNotExist 1> myStdLog 2> myErrLog

Send stdout and stderr to the same file

ls myFileWhichExists myFileWhichDoesNotExist 1> myBothLog 2>&1

I read that last part "2>&1" as "Send stderr (2) to the same place as stdout (1) is already going to".

Notice that if you send stdout and stderr to the same file, because of caching and other issues, the output from stdout and stderr will overlap in unpredictable ways.

kangnkodos··on The Future of Computing Is Analog
Yes. Concentrating on error correction reveals the difference between digital and analog computing.

Digital computers have error correction. Analog computers don't.

Some small number of problems might be solved efficiently using analog computers, but they will never take over the role of general purpose computers because of error correction issues.

kangnkodos··on Ask HN: Before We Spend Millions, What Do You Think of This Blockchain Use Case?
Or... What if @root_axis has not uploaded their content to LBRY yet, and I post it to LBRY first? How does @root_axis claim their proper money?

What stops an evil squatter from claiming URL's that do not belong to them?

How much tax income would be gained by eliminating 100% of the current loopholes and deductions?

It's because of loopholes and deductions that Buffet has a lower tax rate than his secretary. Let's get rid of those.

kangnkodos··on Ask HN: Developers aged 50, how have you gotten around age discrimination?
Late 50's. React/Redux developer. Always learn new things. Simply ask other developers if a company has a reputation to hire people my age. Most have a reputation to only hire people out of college or a few years older. I just don't waste my time with those companies. Look for small companies which have several people who look like me.
kangnkodos··on Train ferry
Maybe add these entries? Train holds car: auto train -> cartrain. Train holds house: sleeper car -> housetrain. Train holds boat: boat carriage -> boattrain. Car holds train: heavy train trailer -> traincar. House holds train: engine shed -> trainhouse. Boat holds train: train ferry -> trainboat. Train holds train: transporter wagon -> traintrain.

kangnkodos··on What Minimum-Wage Foes Got Wrong About Seattle
"Now of course, we should consider the argument that Seattle’s economic growth has been so strong that it overwhelms any negative effects from the higher minimum wage."

It's possible that without the minimum wage hike, there would have been even more than 150K jobs, and the minimum wage hike limited the number of jobs to only 150K.

kangnkodos··on RPG.net bans posts in support of Trump
I conclude from that, that you do not welcome Scott Bowen, the Bi/Gay man in this video, to participate in conversations with you.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/i-shouldnt-exist-1540823580

I'm disappointed in you, @danaris.

kangnkodos··on RPG.net bans posts in support of Trump
@danaris - Thank you for stating out loud what many people think a Trump supporter is. You summed up the stereotype very well. That's important.

Now please take a few minutes and look at the people in the videos (see my previous comment) who are Trump supporters. Those are real people who support Trump. Please let me know specifically which ones are bad enough that they should not be welcomed.

kangnkodos··on RPG.net bans posts in support of Trump
The title is a little misleading. RPG.net is banning PEOPLE who publicly support Trump on their forum.

Look at these 5 videos. People on the left are allowed to bring their whole selves to RPG.net. People on the right are not welcomed to do the same.

kangnkodos··on Why did HN's traffic tank so hard recently?
Alexa says the number of visits from web searches hasn't changes that much.
kangnkodos··on Why did HN's traffic tank so hard recently?
I don't think the number of visits has dipped that much.

Only the rank relative to other web sites has dipped,

kangnkodos··on Why did HN's traffic tank so hard recently?
The Alexa chart is rank among other web sites. The Similarweb chart shows number of visits. Apples and oranges. It's possible that they are both correct. Similarweb shows a small decrease in number of visits.

It could be that there are thousands of sites with a similar number of visits. A small drop in number of visits might cause a huge drop in rank.

kangnkodos··on Why did HN's traffic tank so hard recently?
Alexa says that percentage of visits from a search engine has not dipped significantly. Maybe 15% to 13%.
kangnkodos··on Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies (BEZOS) Act

I think the ad is just taking too long to load. So the web site assumes you are using an ad blocker, and doesn't let you see the article. Just keep trying again and again, and eventually, the slow ad will load.
