kamakazizuru··on Peter Thiel’s Embrace of Trump Has Silicon Valley Squirming
That actually does make sense, negative signalling is powerful, there are many blaming silicon valley for all sorts of problems in society (AI killing jobs, rents in the bay area rising etc) and it would be easy to then take the views of a prominent valley figure and superimpose them onto all of the valley, even if <0,01% support trump.
kamakazizuru··on India’s Reusable Launch Vehicle Demonstrator Successfully Flight Tested
"self-respect" is a bit misplaced here.

None of the countries you named were ruled or for that matter created by a colonial ruler with another language. India in its current form never existed, its like the EU, there are several states with their own languages, and English is the common one.

As for Aliexpress offering several languages - its just the google translate plugin ;).

kamakazizuru··on Announcing Google Research, Europe
1) Why do you think Google needs EU funding for their research ? Last I checked they had one of the largest cash reserves outside the US - which means a lot of it is in the EU, if anything this is a way to smartly spend that cash rather than get taxed repatriating it.

2) The lobbyists can be based in Brussels, Zurich isn't that close to Brussels anyways!

kamakazizuru··on AlphaGo Can't Beat Me, Says Chinese Go Grandmaster Ke Jie
"8:2 implies the difference between them isn't so large. (If someone only beat me 8:2, I'd expect a professional to beat them 10:0.)" Not sure I follow the logic here. They're both professionals, and one was much better than the other in the 10 games they played!
kamakazizuru··on Twitter announces layoffs
how would you have phrased it?
kamakazizuru··on Startup Chile's Successful Companies
the intern group is a joke at best. getting rich kids to pay for internships to make their CVs look more international. There isnt any innovation or disruption or even value creation involved. I'm not sure its something SUP Chile needs to be proud of.
kamakazizuru··on Let’s all laugh at my horrible 2006 post: “YouTube is not a real business”
I think you're mixing up what YouTube does and what Wikipedia does..
kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: I got rejected from Facebook, Dropbox, Microsoft, Quora, What's Wrong?
try looking for internships in Europe, they're a lot better at getting foreigners in as Interns. Germany especially, and since you have experience there before it may not be a bad idea. There are several good startups in Berlin looking for people with your skillset. Leave a comment if you're interested and I'll drop you a mail with some leads in Berlin.
kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: I got rejected from Facebook, Dropbox, Microsoft, Quora, What's Wrong?
my best guess, is that it has (very unfortunately) to do with Visas :/

kamakazizuru··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
I think each one has their own mileage - I was just refuting the parent's claim that you "should" do x or y - I think if you've considered it for a while and think you can stick through it - there's no harm in trying a 10 day retreat. Just as there's no harm in trying a marathon if you're generally fit. Worst case you drop out / slow down.
kamakazizuru··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
I got kind of out of the practice after a few months post the 10-day workshop (life), and this is really encouraging me to get back into it. "The end of the ball of yarn" - really hits the nail on the head. I feel like there's some deeper reason for a lot of the stupid thought patterns I know I have that don't help me - but never managed to get deep enough to find the root-cause. Maybe sitting again will take me there, or at least let me realize its impermanance and move on. It's weird how I can discuss this but feeling it is a whole other thing. :) Metta to you!
kamakazizuru··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
Has Vipassana helped you further?
kamakazizuru··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
Don't see why this should be the case. I got into MM through a similar Vipassana Course and there couldn't have been a better start for me. Only meditating in this style for 10 days did a few things for me that 20-30 minutes a day would not have helped with : 1 - It helped me understand the power of this sort of meditation 2 - It REALLY motivated me to keep at it ever after I left 3 - I got to learn how to meditate properly as opposed to trying something on my own for 30 minutes a day without someone to guide me through it

Honestly it wasn't as brutal as people would like to think - all you need is an open mind.

kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: How do I get my team to write better code?
Thanks - while a lot of the other advice on this thread is helpful in terms of being a better team lead in general - I think the stuff you mentioned is really what I can apply almost immediately - especially the last bit about makign things maintainable.
kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: How do I get my team to write better code?
Right, well it's one thing when posting on HN - I'm not really running a spelling and grammar check. That said - my complaints are not around their writing style. Many of them are non-native speakers and I can live with bad grammar & spelling in comments. The pain-point is really the coding style that leads to bugs where they could have easily been avoided.

I do get your general point of leading by example though - and like the idea of "show them whats wrong instead of just telling them by fixing it in real time".

kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: How do I get my team to write better code?
this is great - I love coding in Python and would definitely use this in the future. Currently we're doing everything in Node.JS though - do you know of any tools for that ? We do use Jslint etc - but landscape certainly seems to go a step further..
kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: How do I get my team to write better code?
The logic of "spend time now because otherwise you'll spend 10x later" - really resonates with me. I guess I need to see it as an investment rather than a waste of time - that really turns the entire thing around quite a bit! Thanks :) - I also completely agree with number 9 - it is easier said than done though in some companies :/
kamakazizuru··on Ask HN: How do I get my team to write better code?
You're very right about the coders bit - I guess it was more an issue of framing it. I've corrected it now.

I do bring the issues up - but usually end up being really frustrated because I assume that these things should be obvious. A lot of the comments in this thread are forcing me to reflect though, and realize that I didnt "know" those things out of the box either - but learned them by seeing others' good code and learning from that or because someone was patient enough to walk my through my mistakes (of which I certainly still make many).

While a pull-request based system would be ideal - it's the timeline and the scope of work that has us a little bit stuck with setting up such a new process.

My key takeaways from this thread would be though that I should certainly do more of the code-reviewing & maybe even get some of the team more involved in code-reviews.

Really appreciate the tremendous feedback here and it makes me realize again why I end up spending so much time on HN - there's just so much to be learned here from some truly helpful folks!

kamakazizuru··on American scientists unearth lost 1960s polar satellite images
the reference to dark data is interesting - I didn't know there was still so much data out there that hadn't been digitized! This kind of stuff would be great for a kickstarter campaign though..
kamakazizuru··on Plastc Card
no sure why this is getting downvoted? It's right off of their website's fineprint... There was a time when an attempt to be helpful comment like this stayed at 0 in the worst case..
kamakazizuru··on Plastc Card
here's an explanation: *Plastc card will be available to use across all participating locations and with all participating payments types following an over-the-air firmware update in 2015 to enable Chip and PIN and contactless payments.

kamakazizuru··on 'One million babies' created by EU student exchanges
the difference is knowing a statistic and generalizing it to each and every citizen of a country. Especially the "lazy" part - that has even been proven to be completely untrue if you look at hours worked etc.
kamakazizuru··on 'One million babies' created by EU student exchanges
intra european nationalism is alive and kicking. Just ask Germans what they think of "lazy" spanish, "corrupt" italians etc.. but it is moving in a better direction - also thanks to programs like the Erasmus exchange.

very cool - finally an app thats for people who dont want to put their entire life on instagram / fb - but still want to share it with loved ones. The UI is also pretty impressive - 5* from me !
kamakazizuru··on A look at Assembly, the community that founds companies
am I the only one who is confused by the way ownership works here? The article itself is more of a dreamy PR piece. However, looking at the website and the FAQ itself - I cannot really figure out how "app coins" work. Who creates them? I understand that they are distributed by bounties, but how many app coins exist? Who creates / mints them? How does the originator of the idea get his share? Would be great to understand this!
