kahlonel··on When static makes your C code 10 times faster
I think a simple “const” would have also done the trick. Sometimes -O3 is clever enough to figure out that the value is never written, so it makes it an asm constant.
kahlonel··on I can't stand developing for Safari anymore
I, on the other hand, appreciate Safari not being an utter resource-hog and a battery drainer. I don't need all these shiny features. I'm ok with "dumbed down" static sites.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
Not exactly what you asked, but a few squats, just once per day, really help with blood circulation to legs. Not having enough blood circulation results in leg discomfort no matter how comfortable your chair is.
kahlonel··on Althttpd: Simple webserver in a single C file
People need to stop assuming that memory safety == functional safety. They are two very different things. Rust ensures memory safety, but it won't stop you from making logical mistakes. You can't be "sure about correctness" unless proven mathematically.
kahlonel··on NordVPN disables features when you turn off auto-renew
And now their login page is "crashing". They knew I was coming to uncheck that crap.
kahlonel··on Google, Apple cave to Pakistan pressure to take down apps by Ahmadiyya Muslims
To get an idea how rampant Islamism is in Pakistan when it comes to Ahmadis, read this: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-pakistan-politics-idUSKCN...

Pakistan will literally sacrifice its economy for the sake of keeping Mullahs happy. It's sad and despicable.

kahlonel··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2020 – Show and tell
Built https://bufr.sh for some existing clients who wanted the functionality. Haven’t been able to sell outside much.
kahlonel··on The Era of Visual Studio Code
This trend of taking StackOverflow polls as global facts has to stop. It is so misleading. Not everyone is on StackOverflow, and not everyone on StackOverflow participates in the polls.
kahlonel··on Statement Regarding the Zen Programming Language
I'd never pay for your compiler. I don't care what features it has over Zig.
kahlonel··on Is the web getting slower?
Why can't we have a direct statement like "The web isn't getting slower", instead of click-baity question titles?
kahlonel··on Modern C
I don’t self-promote usually, but I asked some people on Reddit[1] if they would like an educational stream on embedded systems, and a lot of people said yes. I’m doing one on Sunday most probably. Feel free to join in because that’s one of the things I will be talking about.

kahlonel··on As above, so below, part 2. Bare metal Rust generics
It is not a standard practice. You do want to verify your write though by reading the written blocks back.
kahlonel··on Is Rust Used Safely by Software Developers?

kahlonel··on Toddlers who use touchscreens show attention differences
I personally know kids that don't eat their food unless they are in front of a screen (touch or not), because the only thing that captures their attention are colorful blobs. I find it very detrimental to the kids' mental growth because they don't observe things outside of a screen.
kahlonel··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
This is good, even though it could be a possible result of VW/BMW/Mercedes lobbying efforts. Human life safety is the top priority in any industry in Germany. Regulations are keeping Germany a little behind in the innovation race but, at the end, it is all worth it if people are not dying everyday because of failed tech.
kahlonel··on Grant Imahara Has Died
Grant was my childhood hero, and one of a few people who inspired me to pursue robotics. RIP Grant. 2020 fucking sucks.
kahlonel··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Slack
kahlonel··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
Just another reason why I am never going to touch the new reddit with a 10-foot pole. If they phase out the “old” design, I’m done with it.
kahlonel··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
Problematic for whom? The average citizen doesn't realize the threats and has no idea of safe/unsafe, so there must be someone to decide for them. People who are aware of threats, and are willing to accept the risks can surely find their way around the bans.
kahlonel··on Zoom to bring end-to-end encryption to all users, including non-paying
I can't wait for the quarantine to be over. I'm tired of this Zoom-mania.
kahlonel··on A gentle introduction to pointers using C (2019)
I agree that it is confusing. Here [1] is something that can help new C programmers to understand these kind of declarations. It gets easier after a while.

kahlonel··on Microsoft: Rust Is the Industry’s ‘Best Chance’ at Safe Systems Programming
You can leak memory in Rust too.
kahlonel··on Embedded Rules of Thumb (2018)
> not a predictably small enough workload

Which means ISRs can grow too big. And that’s the reason keeping ISRs as small as possible should be your goal.

kahlonel··on Embedded Rules of Thumb (2018)
Why didn’t they move the command processing into the ISR too then?
kahlonel··on Embedded Rules of Thumb (2018)
> You split the radio task into two tasks: a low priority task for processing commands and the ISR task which does the acknowledgements.

You contradicted yourself here. You moved the code out of radio ISR to application code, thus keeping the radio ISR small.

kahlonel··on Apple Mail randomly becomes the frontmost application in macOS
I was a long time Gmail user, on the verge of leaving Gmail due to a long list of reasons. This bug was the final straw for me (I know it’s not Gmail’s fault). Got rid of Gmail completely. Haven’t seen this bug since.
kahlonel··on Magic Leap has apparently raised another $350M
> Magic Leap cited COVID-19 as a key reason for April’s news.

Riiiigghhhht.

kahlonel··on Ask HN: How can I run a program for 1 month against my will?
A low power device, powered by a battery, and put into a safe. Tell a friend to lock the safe with a code, go somewhere unknown to you, and block you from all kinds of contact for a month.
kahlonel··on Show HN: Raspberry Pi garage door opener
Calm down, please. It's "experimental". No sane person is actually going to use this.
kahlonel··on Stack Overflow reduces global workforce by approximately 15%
That's a whole lot of bullshit for a proactive backlash protection.
