kaelwd··on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next
https://openrouter.ai/deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash-0731?endpoi...

8t/s though apparently and their cache hit rate is terrible so I don't think it's worth it over Relace.

kaelwd··on Show HN: Run an 80B Qwen in 4.3 GB of RAM on a Mac, and a 35B on an iPhone
Only 8B currently but it's been done: https://taalas.com/products/
kaelwd··on Should you wash your solar panels?
Panels are so cheap now you're better off just installing twice as many without tracking.
kaelwd··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
Are there even any OLED commercial panels with HDR and VRR?
kaelwd··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
And buy what? Smasnug? Sony? They're all uniquely shit.
kaelwd··on Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol on an NP-Hard Problem: Does /goal help?
I haven't done a proper benchmark or anything but it isn't noticeably worse at least, and the instant compaction with background processing is nice for slow models.
kaelwd··on Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol on an NP-Hard Problem: Does /goal help?
https://github.com/k0valik/pi-blackhole works pretty well for this, instead of a summary of a summary of a summary it gets a rolling log of important instructions and discoveries, and can /recall exact contents of a previous message or tool call if needed.
kaelwd··on The LLM Critics Are Right. I Use LLMs Anyway
0.25 day flight vs 120+ day walk doesn't really seem like a fair comparison, nobody is hundreds of times more productive from this.
kaelwd··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
No it's optional, the retailers just have to offer it.
kaelwd··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
Yeah just a simplified example, I pay 33/16/10 peak/off-peak/midday.
kaelwd··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
How often do you discharge a car fully?
kaelwd··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
45% of us either rent or live in apartments.
kaelwd··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
Before: 25c/kwh all day

After: 30c/kwh most of the day, 0c from 11-2

It's still worth it if you have a lot of load you can shift to the middle of the day (like a pool heater or battery), but for most 9-5 workers you just end up paying more at the times you're actually home.

Smart meters are free, most people already have one.

kaelwd··on Combustion engine web-based simulator
Some of it is part of claude code's built-in instructions: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/blob/main/plugins/...

"For calibration: AI-generated design right now clusters around three looks: (1) a warm cream background (near #F4F1EA) with a high-contrast serif display and a terracotta accent; (2) a near-black background with a single bright acid-green or vermilion accent; (3) a broadsheet-style layout with hairline rules, zero border-radius, and dense newspaper-like columns."
kaelwd··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
> “Ambulance Victoria,” with unlimited exercise at the cost of about $70 a year

And even if you don't pay this it still isn't that expensive - US$12873 is more than a helicopter transport would cost here. US healthcare companies somehow get away with charging insured patients 10x more than civilised countries charge uninsured ones.

kaelwd··on .self: A new top-level domain designed to support self-hosting
I just use .home, yeah I know it's not reserved but idgaf I'm not writing .arpa.
kaelwd··on Historical memory prices 1960-2026
Only if you're buying DDR3 now, DDR4 and DDR5 are both more expensive than the 2017 peak.
kaelwd··on Car headlights don't have to be this blinding
I have small stick-on convex mirrors that I keep angled to see my back tyres, with the main mirrors adjusted to minimise blind spot.
kaelwd··on I Hate (Most) Keyboard 'Fn' Keys
Traditional keyboards are dead to me, get something programmable with zmk or qmk and a bunch of extra thumb buttons so they can do something more than just the spacebar. I have ctrl and alt in the outer column inline with letters so they're super easy to press without reaching, and shift, return, backspace on thumbs as well as layer switch for function keys, symbols, numpad, and arrows all accessible from the home position. Bonus points for split too so your wrists aren't at a weird angle.
kaelwd··on GitHub Is Down
https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/x69zbgdyfzg0 took three days to resolve and isn't being counted as an outage on the official page.
kaelwd··on WSL 2 is getting faster Windows file system access
Onedrive constantly trying to steal all my files, bing in the start menu, windows update hogging resources then rebooting at the worst time, offline updates taking fking forever even with a fast SSD, layers and layers of bloat and garbage we have to click through or remove on new installs, removing customisation features and taking a decade to half-ass a control panel rewrite, I could go on...
kaelwd··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
`d.add({ days: 100 })` also wraps like you'd expect. `d.with({ day: 208 })` becomes the last day of the month instead but "March 208th" is kinda nonsense anyway so whatever. You could emulate it with `d.add({ days: 208 - d.day })`
kaelwd··on I’ve banned query strings

kaelwd··on Tell HN: An app is silently installing itself on my iPhone every day
iPhone X? That came out this year didn't it?
kaelwd··on A new spam policy for "back button hijacking"
And if the tab was unloaded then you press back it changes the URL but not the actual contents of the page.
kaelwd··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Can I preventDefault on mouse5? What about the physical back button on Android?
kaelwd··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Australia did that but also paid out the telecom companies a gazillion dollars for infrastructure that had only been privatised like a decade earlier.
kaelwd··on The Appalling Stupidity of Spotify's AI DJ
What would you add to MP3 tags? ID3v2 already has separate fields for section/title/performer/conductor/composer/lyricist, it isn't the spec's fault Spotify doesn't use them.
kaelwd··on Mozilla is working on a big Firefox redesign, here is what it looks like
