kablamo··on Our Ridiculous Approach to Retirement
To find out how long you have until retirement try this:

http://networthify.com/earlyretirement

Also, the author's example was a household that makes $100,000 annually and saves 10%. They must work 52 years to save the $2.3 million needed to retire.

If they increased their savings rate to 50% they could retire after 17 years and would only need $1.3 million.

If they increased their savings rate to 80% they could retire after 5.6 years of work and would only need to save $544,000.

kablamo··on Larry Page on Charlie Rose
I have only watched one or two Charlie Rose videos, but I agree that Terry Gross is the best interviewer I have ever heard. By far. Hmm actually I think Adam Carolla is not bad either.
kablamo··on I just open-sourced my iOS password manager with dropbox syncing
Interesting work. I've been thinking about doing something similar for a long time. I'm not on OSX though and I'm a Perl guy.

Someone once suggested to me an encrypted text file + dropbox. You could use pgp or gpg for encryption. Also Vim 7.3 has blowfish encryption: http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Encryption

Obviously an app has the potential to be more convenient and user friendly. But a text file is a very flexible solution.

kablamo··on Log Everything as JSON. Make Your Life Easier.
I've been thinking about this recently as well. I wrote a simple JSON logger for Perl recently. It will probably be on CPAN this weekend. Until then you can see it on prepan and github.

kablamo··on Dear Github, please fix the Watch-Button
Thanks for mentioning dotjs! I didn't know about that project. Basically its greasemonkey but easier to use.
kablamo··on Python and Perl project support on Travis CI
Whoops I missed that. Thanks for explaining the difference. That feature is pretty cool.
kablamo··on Python and Perl project support on Travis CI
Wow, great service. The integration is very smooth. Looks like it has a lot of potential.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see many Perl users adopting this. Perl has had a similar service built into CPAN for many years. The big advantage I see in CPAN Testers is that it tests your code on about 50 different versions of Perl on about 20 different operating systems. And the only thing you need to do to use this service is upload your code to CPAN.

kablamo··on Adventures in Aeron Chair Arbitrage
Interesting. But wouldn't it be better to buy on ebay and sell on craigslist? That way you don't have to drive around to pick up stuff and people come to your house to get things so you don't have to mail it out.
kablamo··on No Ice Cream Sandwich For Galaxy S And Galaxy Tab, Says Samsung
I'm very annoyed there is no ICS. Maybe I have to try this out cyanogen stuff.

I was at a tech meeting in Singapore where a Samsung rep introduced their android tablet last year. Someone asked him when Samsung would stop putting touch wiz on the phone just give us the vanilla os. He said that would never happen because phone companies want to 'differentiate' themselves.

Its plain weird to me that these companies can't accept that these horrible customizations are not giving them an advantage. Their differentiation is going to be on price and hardware. I guess they can't let go of the old business model?

kablamo··on Google.pl's crazy doodle
Only Solaris is available for Kindle. I hate when that happens.

Update: Actually Solaris is not available either. I was misled because there is a Solaris 'Study Guide' available for Kindle.

kablamo··on Backbone vs Knockout
Is there a cache of the cache? Is it just me or is this not loading for other people as well?

Update: Click the 'text only' link to avoid page loading forever.

kablamo··on Why Software Projects Are Terrible And How Not To Fix Them
I feel secretly rewriting software from scratch is rarely the right solution. Especially if management has already decided thats not the direction they want to take.

Your job as an employee is to make your boss happy. If you don't have political buy in from your boss then he/she isn't going to be impressed that you have been spending all this time on this project instead of spending that time on whatever it is that is important to them. Even if its overtime.

If you disagree with your boss that radically, then you should find a new boss because you won't be successful in your current position. And also because you won't ever be happy. Find a boss who you get along with. And be happy.

kablamo··on Developers: You are not a Language
Thoughtful and interesting. This post makes me second guess myself.

As a counter point: I wonder if this is a personal decision. Some people are interested in deep mastery and some people are interested in broad mastery.

kablamo··on Why Perl?
There are lots of great languages. I think we can learn from each other. Perl has a lot of problems but also a lot of strengths. CPAN is one of its strengths.

Compare CPAN: https://metacpan.org/module/Moose::Manual

Then compare with other repositories from other languages: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1693529/list-of-top-repos...

CPAN does

* Documentation

* Historical versions of libraries

* Search

* Source code

* Integrated bug tracker

* Integrated review system

* Links to repositories

* Integrated automated tests regularly run against hundreds of machines/operating systems/perl versions.

kablamo··on Spark
Cool. I also like that he set up a wiki where people can contribute interesting spark one liners:

https://github.com/holman/spark/wiki/Wicked-Cool-Usage

kablamo··on Redesigning the country selector
As a vimperator user and command line person this is awesome. But obviously as a tablet or mobile phone user this would be not good.

I think this could be easily fixed by having the drop down menu pop up when you click in the input field (before you have typed anything).

kablamo··on NASA Captures New Images of Large Asteroid Passing Earth
I think they just took a screenshot of some video game from the 90s. Duke Nukem? Doom?

Seriously does this kind of image do anything for the scientists or is this just PR?

kablamo··on Trend implies Chrome to overtake IE in browser share in one year.
Interesting. Firefox is about equal to IE in Europe. While in Germany, Firefox usage is way ahead of IE:

http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-DE-monthly-200809-201107

In antarctica everyone is using safari.

kablamo··on Dark Sky - Weather Prediction, Reinvented
Do they really need $35,000 to do this? It seems like so many people produce apps first and get paid later, I'm not sure what makes their situation different.

Thinking about this more, its brilliant that they put their project on kickstarter. It didn't click for me that people are using kickstarter this way. They get some extra marketing and some extra $. Interesting also that they aren't afraid of someone taking their idea because they have a head start.

Good moves.

kablamo··on Gmail’s new look
You can use a theme thats similar to that video. Its been available in the Themes section of Gmail settings for several months.

I find it a huge improvement.

kablamo··on Google eBookstore seems to have been launched
Google has an android app so you can read the books on your phone. But its not available in the UK.
kablamo··on Immigrant entrepreneur arrested to meet quotas
My understanding also is that its way way way way better to get married overseas and then try to get into the US. Sorry, I don't have any links for you.

It will still probably take a few months to a year. Which is probably going to make it difficult to have a job lined up in advance.

In any case its better because it doesn't require you and your spouse to be separated.

kablamo··on Ubuntu and GNOME jump the shark
For those that don't like it, the alt+tab behavior can be changed back to the traditional style in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. Try using the static workspace switcher.
kablamo··on URL Object Notation: A better JSON for URLs
Why would want json (or html) in your urls? Example?
kablamo··on Microsoft has lost $9 billion on Bing
Thats a lot of money. Is duckduckgo profitable yet? I bet its not losing $1 billion per quarter. But then again I suppose Bing has hugely more market share than duckduckgo.
kablamo··on I moved to Singapore
no gum on the train is a good thing. seems obvious to me?
kablamo··on I moved to Singapore
I'm not a fan of the death penalty. But to be afraid of dying in Singapore is silly. Singapore is probably the safest country on the planet. There is no crime. No natural disasters. A good, cheap medical system. A great transportation system. A booming economy. All things that make you safer and live longer.

I just moved to London from Singapore and I don't understand why westerners put up with such high levels of crime. Its awesome to be able to ride the train at night and walk through any park or dark street anywhere in a major city at 1am and feel completely 100% safe.

Westerners distrust government because government sucks in the West. They tax you at high rates and give you long lines and crappy service. In Singapore government works. It produces jobs, every government form is online and the rules are ALL practical and actually make sense (unlike the west). Policemen are polite and courteous. My Singaporian wife paid 5% in taxes last year btw.

And above all its safe to go for a run at night!

kablamo··on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)
works for me on ubuntu. for 2 different lenovos and a dell.
kablamo··on 1 bitcoin worth more than dollar
I followed all kinds of links and couldn't figure out bitcoins. This link actually answered some questions. Sounds really fascinating. Definitely will look into this more.
kablamo··on We don't need freedom of religion
Interesting.

I think the answer depends on who you are. It is a choice if you don't believe in religion. Its not a choice if you are religious.
