jyunderwood··on 1Password Is Down
I didn't realize `op` was accessing the web service and not a local instance of the app. What is the "integrate with 1Password CLI" option for?
jyunderwood··on Typepad is shutting down
I was thinking the same thing. "Deactivated" is different from "deleted."

I’m not a customer, but in today’s world, I would actually prefer that when the service shuts down, all accounts and published data are destroyed. Just wiped completely. Otherwise, what are the odds that customer PII gets sold off and the service owner licenses the previously hosted posts and comments to an AI company?

jyunderwood··on How to turn off Apple Intelligence
That probably means your iPad doesn’t support it. You need an iPad with an M series chip or the A17 Pro mini.
jyunderwood··on Forge – A Django SaaS Framework
$1000/yr is steep for starting a project from scratch with it. You need to really be sure about needing it and about it paying for itself.

The Rails equivalent (https://jumpstartrails.com/) is $249/year and the Laravel equivalent (https://spark.laravel.com/) is $99/project.

Those seem geared in features and price at hobbyist wanting to monetize a side project. This looks like it would be just as helpful for hobbyists using Django, but it’s not priced right for them.

Maybe it’s more for people who are about to start a second revenue project.

jyunderwood··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2021)
ThirtySixteen | Backend Developers and Data Engineers | Full-time | Dallas, TX or Remote (USA)

We are building software so used car dealerships can streamline the process of qualifying applicants for an auto loan and sell a car with minimal touch points. There is a lot of opportunity for growth at our startup as well as in the industry as the current way to buy a used car online is still in the Stone Age.

We are looking for junior and senior level Rails developers as well as a data engineer to help us process auto loan applicant and banking data to present a new way of determining loan qualification status to dealerships who offer in-house financing options.

Find out more about the positions at https://thirtysixteen.com/careers or email devcareers@thirtysixteen.com

jyunderwood··on Stimulus.js 2.0
I've found it works well with [ViewComponent](https://github.com/github/view_component) if you're in to that.

jyunderwood··on App Store Improvements
You, as a user, will still be able to see the app in your purchased list and download the latest version, according to the FAQ. I think this is only removing them from the app store for new sales.
jyunderwood··on John Gruber Misses the Point About Lightning Headphones
My issue with Lightning as the new audio connector is that it's not going to be a "Standard."

Yes, headphone makers are making lightning cable headphones, but I doubt any device company outside of Apple will use it as audio out. Not only phone and computer makers but makers of AV receivers, amps, mixing boards, etc.

If the 3.5mm jack is the new floppy drive and ADB port, USB will be the standard that kills it, like it killed the others.

jyunderwood··on Hanami – web framework for Ruby
Have you looked in to Padrino? http://padrinorb.com

You can cherry pick parts of it out in to a Sinatra app, or you can swap out `Sinatra::Application` for `Padrino::Application`.

jyunderwood··on Node.js ES2015/ES6 support
I would assume the answer is no. Backporting ES6 features could introduce some breaking changes. You could transpile your code with something like Babel[1].

jyunderwood··on Using Google Cloud Vision OCR to extract text from photos and scanned documents
The accuracy is about the same. We process store circular images which are actually pretty easy to OCR. It helps that we have large images to start with and are converted to grayscale and then edge sharpened in imagemagick before being sent to the OCR process.
jyunderwood··on Using Google Cloud Vision OCR to extract text from photos and scanned documents
At work I replaced a [Tesseract](https://github.com/tesseract-ocr) pipeline with some scripts around the Cloud Vision API. I've been pleased with the speed and accuracy so far considering the low cost and light setup.

Btw, here is a Ruby script that will take an API key and image URL and return the text:

jyunderwood··on The State of Meteor Part 1: What Went Wrong
This explains why MDG left things like file structure, routing and forms to the community. Even though these are key part of nearly every single web app out there, they’re framework-level components, not platform-level.

When I tried out meteor for the first time, the lack of official consensus on things like folder structure, routing, and what is a "model" kept me from considering it further.

The small demo projects were fun though.

jyunderwood··on Node v4.2.0 (Stable)
I don't think that means "we're screwed." Perhaps npm can now use this LTS as a baseline for v3, since you can upgrade npm separately from Node.
jyunderwood··on Node v4.0.0
Excited to see this happen so soon. I was expecting it to take a bit longer.

I see it's still shipping npm v2. Any news on when npm v3 will be "production-ready" and the default version?

jyunderwood··on Create a Heatmap of Geocoded IP Addresses with Rails
Instead of using geocoder and fetching the info from a 3rd party web service, you could use a local installation of the geoip database from maxmind and the geoip-c gem.

jyunderwood··on Introducing Boxen
It's kind of like initializing a fresh OS install to something useable.

Their our-boxen template[1] installs homebrew for you as well as some other software.

jyunderwood··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
I would like to see the subdomain for entries. For example, github.com is used for official blog posts (blog.github.com), blogs from random users (username.github.com), project websites, and project repos (github.com). Having the subdomain displayed would make the distinction easier to make.
jyunderwood··on Introducing Chrome for Android
I wonder if/when the "Browser" app will get the hardware-accelerated canvas support.

Currently, some of the canvas apps I've tried on ICS run worse than on Gingerbread. However, those same apps run acceptable in this Chrome beta.

Mobile was a consideration with this version, and it has a nice responsive layout.
