Never thought a news site can manage to place so many ads on my small iPhone screen. It's unreadable. Do you know what is the original source for this?
Few days back I stumbled upon a video about Ramanujan [0] and the: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 ..(to infinity) = -1/12.(Turns out the proof in the video is incorrect or at least not concise enough, because you can't do that with divergent series). So that got me curious and I wanted to understand what's going on. How can 1 + 2 .. etc equal to -1/12 and not infinity. So I went on small binge watching videos to get an intuition and understanding about this. This led me to Riemann Hypothesis and Euler's identities and complex numbers etc. Now I have a list of books that I want to skim/read to get a historical context around these problems. I don't take any notes just yet, because I don't know what is important and what is not, I just jump into the stuff and hope that when I come out of the other end I will at least have a understanding why it equals -1/12. It's like panning out gold, there might be some gold nuggets. And maybe, just by pure chance, I come up with some ridiculous ideas how to disprove Riemann Hypothesis ;P (I think I have to revisit Gödel, Escher, Bach and Gödel's Incompletness Theorems to prove that it's not provable).
I remember being very meticulous about my learning process and tried to build a sandcastle of knowledge. I had notebooks for every subject, I went over them every so often just to be sure I don't forget stuff etc. I was living in a 19th century time-frame and hoped to be one of those autodidacts, Renaissance men, polymaths who knew everything there was to know about the world they were living in. Romantic and vain dreams, that don't match our times.
I grew out of it and the truth is similar to Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap! So, why waste my time on trying to memorize stuff I don't really need, just to satisfy my own superiority complex and to feel like an erudite man? Now I'm using Just-In-Time approach: If I don't know or can't remember something, I will look it up.
I don't think I could retype the whole novel, maybe short stories would be more suitable. I remember back in the day when I wanted to be a writer I used to retype short stories just to get out of writers block. After rewriting first few paragraphs I started to change things up and transform into my own story, meanwhile mimicking the rythm and the flow of the original author. It's a good exercise just to get the right feeling.
To be fair, I think I submitted this link before the submission you linked to. My submission was buried almost instantly and didn't get any votes. What puzzles me is to understand, how come people are upvoting it now, a day later, when it should be gathering dust already. Go figure.
Is Netbeans still used? I remember it was a thing long time ago. I'm going to install it just out of curiosity and see if it can handle my java project.
Can’t read the article, guess I’m out of free reads this month/week. I wish there was some kind of rule against posting medium.com links on HN. That would incentivise people to use some other tools, for example dev.to or personal blogs.
Agree with you on this. Advice, coming from any billionaire, millionaire or otherwise top percentile person, should be taken with a grain of salt. Main reason in my opinion is that it's ingrained into their personality. A lot of them are not "normal". I don't want to label people, but their brains function differently than mine at least. I remember Nietszche's argument, probably from "Beyon Good and Evil", that philosophy cannot be separated from the philosopher. Stoics were stoics, because their personalities were fitted for this kind of philosophy. You can become "successful" only, when your personality is already predispositioned for this kind of life.
Landing page UI took me by suprise. It's refreshing in some sens, but little bit broken. Can't really click on the items in the navbar. Have to scroll down little bit first, and only then the links are clickable.
Tried Notion for a while, but it just does too much in my opion, it gives me too many choices. I could spend hours trying to get the perfect home screen and arrange pages into a perfect order. But that's all I did. I spent more time worrying about getting the right structure than actually taking the notes.
I don't know what to think about Scribd. I clearly remember all the shady tactics they used with copyrighted pdf's etc, but on the other hand I'm a pretty happy customer of theirs. Where else could I get thousands of ebooks and audiobooks for 7-8 euros per month?
There should be a"Kickstarter" type of platform where small companies can form a ring of defense against big bullies. In case of some absurd legal action everyone can contribute to help with the legal fees etc.
This is great news and inspiring. Must be one of the most popular web applications that is written in clojurescript(at least that's what I assumed it is written in, purely based on how to html looks like)
Not sure about being a founder. I rather be a entrepreneur and if that means that at some point i end up founding a startup, so be it. But the term “founder” seems like a unnecessarily limiting word and i don’t understand why it appeals to some people.
You don’t need electron app. Chrome has built in support for creating apps from webpages. Tools->more tools->create shortcut and it will save the shortcut into your apps folder.
It’s amazing how software engineers can get things done without actually knowing the tools they are using. CSS is one of these tools that i never bothered to learn properly but instead hack it until it works as expected.
