jyounker··on Hard-to-swallow truths they won't tell you about software engineer job
The poster is referring to estimation, which is different than planning. Estimating is hard, and requires a many people working together. It can be done for a group, but not for individuals.

In many places estimates are actually lies. There are even plenty of companies where realistic estimates, and well planned projects will get you sidelined. These are often places that reward for fire-fighting rather than planning, and where your value is judged by how busy you appear to be rather than how efficiently you work.

It's important to understand which kind of company you are working in, and if you understand that, then you can adjust your behavior appropriately, and succeed within the environment.

I'm happy to be working in a place that rewards for planning, but I've worked in places where detailed and accurate planning was punished. Oddly enough, this division is surprisingly disconnected from whether the business is successful or not. A good business model will cover a multitude of technical sins.

After 30 years in the job, I say that the poster you're responding to is just realistic. I love my job. I love what I do, but it's worth remembering that it's just a job. There is so much more to life.
jyounker··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
The poster's entire article is based on a strawman.

The "Defund The Police" movement has very specific and very well documented goals: Use police only for law-enforcement, and use specialized responders for non-law enforcement interactions. For example, you send mental health specialists when someone is threatening suicide. This reallocates funding from the police to more capable responders, but allows the remaining police to actually focus on law enforcement.

The author ignores this completely to make his argument.

jyounker··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
> Redefining words in order to win arguments. Nice. Defunding means exactly

> that. I know this because that is what happened to the police forces that

> were defunded. Not entirely defunded, but they ended up with less money

> in their budget.

The poster is not redefining the term.

The "Defund The Police" movement has very specific and very well documented goals: Use police only for law-enforcement, and use specialized responders for non-law enforcement interactions. For example, you send mental health specialists when someone is threatening suicide. This will reduce funding for the police, but it also reduces the police's workload.

Is the movement poorly named? Yes. Is their goal to eliminate police? Absolutely not.

jyounker··on Ask HN: Looking for DB schema management tool
Thank you! "Data catalog" is indeed the magic phrase I was looking for.
jyounker··on Sam Bankman-Fried testifies, says he "skimmed over" FTX terms of service
Its very easy to look at your own time, and the particular details of your time, and see something unique and special, but it's rarely true. The quick-talking-stream-of-connsciousness bullshitter aptly describes snake oil salesman and evangelists also. It's the bread-and-butter of classic carnival barkers, and the heart of the con.

SBF is the same classic huckster, but wrapped up in a hoodie.

Assassination as a Service?
jyounker··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
Because it's a euphemism for "killing innocent people".
jyounker··on Birds make nests out of anti-bird pins
Pigeons aren't a problem. Killing off pigeon predators is a problem.
jyounker··on Birds make nests out of anti-bird pins
Same thing. Just more colorful. At least to our eyes.
jyounker··on Birds make nests out of anti-bird pins
So true. So sad.
jyounker··on Why it's hard to pay your taxes
Paying our taxes could be easy but Turbo Tax profits from it being difficult, and Grover Norquist wants paying your taxes to be painful.
jyounker··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
It's not done for two reasons:

1) The tax software industry 2) Libertarian/far right groups want to make it hard for you to pay your taxes.

Here's a Planet Money episode talking about this: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2019/04/03/709656642/epis...

jyounker··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
To add to the point above, it's worth understanding that IntelliJ is not an editor. It's a refactoring engine with a very nice structured editor, and the key to using it effectively is to use the higher-level features that it provides.

If you're not using the refactoring tooling then you won't understand why many people love it so much.

[It's worth looking under the hood at the plugin APIs. The editor doesn't work on text files. It works on ASTs.]

P4merge from Perforce works even better. It's just a file merge tool, and doesn't require you to use Perforce.

I've got a git merge/diff wrapper that falls back from p4merge to idea and finally back to stock diff.

jyounker··on Discussion: structured, leveled logging
Or you include the trace ID as one field in the structured log. That ID can be threaded through the log library.
jyounker··on Ask HN: Why are distributed systems so polarizing?
Those seem like extreme positions. Reality is more like this:

1) Real engineers write systems that accomplish the organization's goals.

2) Most people don't need to write large distributed system, but they will end up writing small distributed systems.

3) Small distributed systems can be surprisingly complicated.

jyounker··on Why thinking hard makes us feel tired
Being poor takes a huge amount of mental effort. This would explain in physiological terms why it's hard to make good decisions when you're poor.

Yes, it is just a band-aid for one portion of the problem. It's not any sort of a long-term solution. At some point we have to stop spewing carbon into the atmosphere, and the sooner we do that the better.

The situation is even more dire when you consider that increasing CO2 levels inhibit cognitive function.

jyounker··on I should have loved biology
> In biology the code is the DNA and RNA, whereas the hardware is the proteins.

This distinction isn't as clear as you think. The active parts of ribosomes (the machines that translate mRNA into proteins) are catalytic RNA. There are organisms that use RNA to store templates (RNA viruses).

jyounker··on Why are there different ways of measuring energy?
The ongoing cost of mining sunlight is nearly zero.
jyounker··on Why are there different ways of measuring energy?
Different ares of engineering and science use intersecting sets of terminology. This page is a very clear definition of how these terms are defined and what they mean in a particular context around energy production and utilization.

The number one reason for using a credit-card is that your losses are contractually limited. Not only that, they perform automated fraud detection for you.

And now you want me to give that up, and take on the responsibility myself?

That's not a strong argument in your favor.
