jwhitlark··on Federal Reserve chair says decline in workers' share of profits 'very troubling'
I agree. Salary is paid for work, returns are paid for success (or speculation). But while it is a component, work != success.
jwhitlark··on The Turkish city that lives for breakfast
I'd say people need to recognize that the role of tourist and activist are different, and don't combine well. Know why you're there, and take the appropriate precautions for your role, and you're probably going to be fine. But don't show up as an activist and expect to be treated like a tourist.
jwhitlark··on Ask HN: Is going back to college worth it if you already have experience?
There are lots of good thoughts here. If the only thing is to make you more marketable, then consider if there isn't something else less time and money consuming that would give you more.

I think college has more to offer, but it really depends on what you want out of it and how hard you want to work.

At the moment, the economy is booming. You could always go back to school during the next downturn. When it's raining soup, put out your bowl and all that.

I have seen professional doors shut because of a lack of a degree, or a lack of a masters, or a phd. It all depends on what you want and what tradeoffs you're willing to make.

jwhitlark··on Conduit 0.5.0 and the future of Conduit
Haha, I remember them. (sighs)
jwhitlark··on We're All Subsidizing People Who Use American Express
Well, now that I keep my driver's licence and one credit card in my phone case, and have to make a point of carrying another card, any but a favorite shop loses out to someone who takes amex.
jwhitlark··on Amtrak exploring ending Southwest Chief through service
The Republican party used to have a brain, soul and guts, even if it was wrong on a number of issues. Now it's just mouth and a bad attitude. Both Lincoln and Reagan would be disappointed.
jwhitlark··on Truth First, or Why You Should Mostly Implement Database-First Designs
This has certainly worked for me on smaller scale, but when things get big, it seems to break down. In theory, you should be able to look at subsets, but I've rarely seen things well factored enough that this worked well in practice.
jwhitlark··on Ask HN: Best practices for onboarding new employees?
I like to keep this kind of info on 4x6 index cards. Easy to reorder, toss, review. Group them into a few categories, like how to, questions, that's weird, diagrams of how things fit together, etc.

Then set aside time to go through them on a regular basis. Make scripts from them, checklists, docs...

jwhitlark··on Kubernetes best practices: upgrading your clusters with zero downtime
It's a good series. Too bad people didn't take a look at the others before dragging it down.
jwhitlark··on Why Do Americans Stay When Their Town Has No Future?
I think this thread overestimates how much people care. Social and virtue signaling mean people have to be sympathetic when it's brought up, but I don't think most people actually care. Anyone who struggles wants their struggles to mean something, but the world doesn't care.
jwhitlark··on Why did I spend 1.5 months creating a Gameboy emulator? (2017)
Chip8 is a good one to cut your teeth on. Very simple, good examples, does not take too long, but once you've done it, its much easier to see how more complex ones could work.
jwhitlark··on Ariane chief seems frustrated with SpaceX for driving down launch costs
Absolutely! I'm not said it isn't impressive, and it will have great research value. I'm just wondering what might be achievable with different assumptions. Instead of 1 6.5 meter telescope, how about 20 1 meter telescopes?
jwhitlark··on Ariane chief seems frustrated with SpaceX for driving down launch costs
I think one reason that the Arianne and James Webb are such a good fit are because they are designed on the same model. What would a telescope designed around a SpaceX model look like? Self assembly in orbit? Networked independent telescopes? Ariannes are pets, not cattle. What would it look like if we rethought that?
jwhitlark··on The Entire Economy Is MoviePass Now
It appears that moviepass is mostly an arbitrage play, where amazon is not....
jwhitlark··on What technical recruiters want from engineering candidates
I think advertising "work with X" is usually a problem if people don't care about your domain. Domain first, then the tech can be a nice to have.
jwhitlark··on Ask HN: Why aren’t ‘team retrospectives’ a thing in ‘traditional’ industries?
In the military they are called After Action Reports.
jwhitlark··on 29 Design Features That Increase Your Home’s Value
It is in the bay area.
jwhitlark··on Southwest 1380: think about the flight attendants
I'd always hear it was derived from Save Our Ship, but in reality, it's a backronym, and was chosen simply because it was easy and clear to transmit in Morse Code.

jwhitlark··on What Did Ancient Romans Do Without Toilet Paper?
That's surprising. All the times I've been to Turkey, I've only seen a couple of squat toilets. I saw far more in Japan.
jwhitlark··on Ask HN: What are the best MOOCs you've taken?
This course was excellent. After years of self study it really pulled everything together for me.
jwhitlark··on Ask HN: How do you handle authentication and authorization between microservices

jwhitlark··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
I found kubernetes up and running really helpful. Kubernetes the hard way was really useful, but a painful weekend.
jwhitlark··on Dropbox saved almost $75M over two years by moving out of AWS
Agreed. De-risking non core competencies is very rational, especially while iterating business strategies.
jwhitlark··on Show HN: Tet – A todo app that deletes your tasks at the end of the day
100% use of nearly anything is over use, not just because of peaks in load, but because it must both be done and perfect.

Think of a bookcase. 100% means you can never add more books, and it also makes it very difficult to reorganize anything.

jwhitlark··on Guide to Writing Dockerfiles for Go Web-Apps
Docker Inc. bought a unikernel startup a while back. Presumably they see that as a possible endpoint.
jwhitlark··on 'Fiction is outperforming reality': how YouTube's algorithm distorts truth
Or suddenly the volume jumps.
jwhitlark··on How to write a CHIP-8 interpreter
I wrote a CHIP-8 emulator as a warm up to writing a NES emulator. Then I decided I didn't want to write an NES emulator. I do recommend this as a starting point, though. You'll learn a ton.
jwhitlark··on China’s High-Speed Train Map Puts U.S. Transportation to Shame
A friend of mine, born in Iran, emigrated to England and got citizenship. A few years later, he emigrated to the US and got American citizenship. Genuinely curious, I asked him why he came to the US once he had EU citizenship. His response: "In Europe, you stay where they put you." Of course, this was 15 years ago. Things can change.
jwhitlark··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
I read years ago that outside of inexperience and illness, (being very young or very old), your likelihood of an accident scales linearly with miles driven. So, unlike flying, distance increases risk in statistically meaningful ways.
