Hope crushed…
I've always been a fan of: 1. Skill based system vs. Level/Class based system. 2. Looting Corpses/Houses 3. Player Housing 4. True/Open PvP
Having said that, I'm not going to come near this game if it's going to offer: 1. Trammel 2. Insurance 3. Closed PvP 4. Class/Level System
I don't mind the dated graphic looks. Look forward to more info.
Hopefully they'll bring some old school principles and mechanics back.
It's more likely it's the other link that's posted - the official FB Feed announcement.
Narcissism is getting a more bad rep due to today's over sharing platforms (and for valid reasons), but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss/defend from the label.
You may not notice it, but outsiders can see it more easily (ie: headshot taking half the page). I notice you even took the time to shop in an artificial background for your headshot. Just these lil bits that add up.
As for the article content, I'm surprised you went for a UX breakdown without using the product (or do you have beta access?) Visually I like the redesign, but not knowing how the menus work, actually using the product and knowing that the announcment page is full of carefully curated photos, it's hard for me to comment and compare.
Edit: OP said wasn't shopped - I stand corrected.
Also can't help but visualize how Instagram will come into play, with such a heavy emphasis on photos in this new update.
But It's a beautiful looking game and when the light bulb went off of how the game is played, I will be downloading it.
Perhaps edit the video so it shows more of the core gameplay (like the part in the last 10s in the video).
Noun Project vs Layer Vault vs Flat UI
If anyone notice other similar icons, I can update image with side by side comparison.
*Thanks to fellow HNers for the links to the images. I just stuck it all together side by side.
Edit: Updated with more samples.
TLDR:

Don't know if 'kinda' is being used to soften the accusation or it's not a straight up copy - I can't see the icon they are talking about.

Here's the Flat UI designs: http://designmodo.github.com/Flat-UI/
LV is saying that illustrations/artwork was the reason for the notice so if anyone have artwork on the dashboard they can compare that'd be great (cause I can't find any copied artwork from their main site).
Layervault https://layervault.com/
The issue is artwork/illustration.
'He kinda copied it, so we slapped him with DMCA. We kinda copied a free icon, but it's okay.'
You can't patent Colors / Helvetica Neue / Rounded Corner Squares. It just reeks of tactics similar to patent trolls.
I think a while back there was blog theme used that was similar to Svbtle, but there was no take down notice or such nonsense. It generated a decent discussion and conversations about something that's too close in style.
Look at @layervault on Twitter, they are just getting destroyed right now. Even by designers, their main target audience.
If they went along the lines like 'Hey, this is pretty similar to our design. We think it's cool we inspired you but can you deviate it from us a bit more or re-name the project to like Layervault Bootstrap?' I mean why not - have your name in the same conversation as Twitter Bootstrap!
A total botched and missed opportunity.
Even Apple didn't even go after others when rounded corners, glassy/glossy, gradient buttons was the trend. (Yes, Apple didn't invent those, just as LV didn't invent flat UI or the art work - which btw, is just a flat color. Glad Pantone isn't going around with LV's mentality.)
Just speechless.
What are your thoughts on this?
Didn't know some companies are asking to pay for it yourself upfront first - definitely makes it more risky…
Wouldn't it be better if you put that $5/month and let them know upfront copy/prices are not set - they are meant to communicate what that area is for and how much space is dedicated to it.
What if you had in your mind that the space is for $5/month, but used lorem ipsum and designed around that.
Then the client hands you copy that goes '$5/month, $50/ year, Save $10 if you subscribe annually / 20% off.' This will likely to have an impact on your layout and spacing, since you just used 'lorem ipsum' in the wireframe step.
The most basic wireframes will be just boxes everywhere and I label the boxes, say 'Pricing Plan Feature'.
Next iteration, would be wireframe still but all the copy need to be clear and thought out ie: the tag line would be 'Pricing Plan Feature' with a sentence below it like 'Our Plan fits any budget, from $5/month to $100/month' and be in that wireframe.
When people wireframe with lorem ipsum/line blocks, giving no indication of what would/is there, it can create assumptions and confusion - for your team mates/clients. If you say it's just for layout, then just use boxes with labels - anything else is just distraction.
When I get the copy after the wireframe, it can be frustation to get handed an essay and try to fit it in a space designed for a paragraph.
Always design around the content/copy, even at the wireframe stage. Knowing the exact (or close to it) copy/content the better - allowing you to gauge the layout and spacing more accurately.
I don't mind it, just put it upfront that I'm not getting anything in exchange for my email address. Thought I get to try out the product but I'm just on a waiting list.
Then I'm asked to share/spam it, something that I have not tried/vetted, with my social circle?
I'm very interested in the service, just tell me upfront you're only collecting emails for now.
Guess time to check out IGN unless anyone have other suggestions.
Nice big database of spots. There are certain guidelines and unwritten rules, so try not to spoil it for everyone else.
Personally, the 2 on the top of my need-to-checkout-list for UE is Pripyat and the catacombs beneath Paris.
I've never felt more alone (as if I'm the only person left) when exploring long abandoned locations at night.
In case you're looking for feedback:
1. The location selection is reversed - ie: when I am selecting the city, the State (smaller column showing only 2 letters) should be on the left not right, since you're drilling down. (But for category selection, you have it the 'right' way, with the higher level/smaller column on the left).
2. There's something going on with the top stroke at the top of the app, below the 20px black status bar - it seems to get shorter then longer whenever I tap the search icon top right. I noticed it since it was quite jarring.
Really enjoy the full width pictures in the listings!
When I first started playing, I was reacting to situations - fires, disasters, as they happened, which was already too late.
Or I'd build all the fire stations in a nice row, or police stations all in a ordered block of land, then get frustrated when they all jammed each other trying to get out and answer calls. My tactics from Red Alert isn't going to work here.
Can't wait for the latest SC!
I'd throw money at you.
I don't need/want a mac app for reading stuff that's available on the web. That just makes me bounce between 1 extra app/window if I want to read/learn more about a certain subject.
I agree it's not a good idea for a startup to be as combative as Tesla. But in this case, I think Musk did good for Tesla - ie: Even CNN is riding the wave.
So when I'm saving for a version, I save it as a separate file.
The problem with detecting a save and treating that as a version, is going to net a me a ton of versions that I will not need.
There should be a plugin that has a shortcut key within PS and lets me save it as a version when I dictate it and not every time time I hit Cmd+S. Cause when I Cmd+S != new version.
I've been told to learn Layer Comp in CS6. Apparently it's Adobe's new feature to version control.
It's definitely going to require some practice to fight the urge to simply glance at my watch (than fishing out the phone) when engaged with something/someone else.
Wished they'd ditch iPhone 5 size, but go ahead with the iPhone plus model, this way those that prefer small and nimble devices gets satisfied too (but then not sure how many of us are out there).
