justinlink··on YouTube Class Action: Same IP Address Upload Pirate Movies and File DMCA Notices
Prenda Law used a similar tactic when they uploaded films to pirate bay and then sued anyone who downloaded them.

You can bet if Schneider loses the case, she'll be left holding the bag as Virgin Islands-based Pirate Monitor Ltd disappears.

Creative folks who hire these law firms that specialize in pirate hunters or "monitoring" companies need to realize they have incentives to pirate your content to keep your business. And when you sue people off information they provided you, it's your name on the lawsuit. Sure you can try to sue the companies after you lose, but good luck with that.

justinlink··on FDA authorizes rapid, at-home coronavirus test
$330 million per day or nearly 10 billion per month, not counting distribution costs.

And could we manufacture 10 billion of them a month?

justinlink··on The Polling Crisis Is a Catastrophe for American Democracy
I'm sure there are mistakes and errors during any election. In the end it probably ends up being a non-factor. While wondering about the election results validity is a valid and good question, if you are suggesting maybe the polls are correct but the voting results are wrong, I find that nearly impossible.

There are so many ways a pollster could go wrong. Sample Size, Push Polling, Shy Voters, Poor Question, Poorly Trained Survey Collectors, and on and on.

With voting it's basically did we count it right.

justinlink··on GM, Ford knew about climate change 50 years ago
I remember from that time in school more about global cooling especially aerosols and a lot of concerns about over-population.

Of course smog was a concern too, but the science has definitely evolved since we were in school.

justinlink··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
It is a coronavirus though, it's not an entirely new type of virus that we have never seen before. It has limitations.
justinlink··on FreeCol: Turn-based strategy game based on the old game Colonization
It was playable to the end the last time I played 6 or 7 years ago.

It has been in development since 2002.

justinlink··on Zoom Partial Outages
I've had the same conversations and I've been warning my teacher wife that the path they are going down ignores what people in technology have already lived.

The issue though comes down to each school is mandated to have so many school days and hours of instruction for the year. You can't just have a school year of 1 hour days and call it a year.

If they don't actively teach the students for 900+ hours for the school year, they are in violation of the state mandate. Does giving an assignment online with no instruction count as hours? How many hours?

When in doubt, take what you know, which is in person lectures online and reach the mandates. The children will suffer. The teachers will suffer. Administration/Government will meet their mandates.

justinlink··on Zoom Partial Outages
For many schools, zoom is the backup plan. Covid caused the in-person outage.

This isn't their area of expertise, and asking teachers to migrate to the backup and inform and assist their students to get online during an outage of unknown length isn't reasonable.

Snow days in 2020 will be replaced with Zoom Outage days.

justinlink··on Zoom Partial Outages
Yes, some schools are planning on this. Breaks for lunch / recess.

Too many schools are taking the approach that our learning wasn't structured enough in the spring, so we are going to the opposite extreme.

It's going to have a negative effect on the children and caregivers.

We have non-technical people on tight deadlines trying to reproduce brick and mortar on a computer screen. It's not going to end well. I feel for them, they are trying their best.

justinlink··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
The hospitalization numbers show the majority of them were under 1 year of age, who would not be attending school. This according to your link [2]

>> Among 95 children aged <1 year with known hospitalization status, 59 (62%) were hospitalized, including five who were admitted to an ICU. The percentage of patients hospitalized among those aged 1–17 years was lower (estimated range = 4.1%–14%)

And of course the number of children infected would be much lower than "all 74 million".

justinlink··on Flood of Oil Is Coming, Complicating Efforts to Fight Global Warming
While I agree on the utility that other posts have mentioned, I also must say it also has room for kids in a smaller form factor.

With three kids in car seats, I found the F-150 4-door cab to be a great option. They are designed with enough room for 3 large adults to ride in the back so fitting the car seats is no problem. It's really tough to fit three proper car seats in the back seat of a sedan.

While I could get a large SUV, I don't want to banish one of the kids to two rows deep in the back of a large SUV. We are all together in the cab. Comfortable.

justinlink··on Google Maps shows sunken car where missing man’s body was found
It's Florida though. It's more of a swamp than a pond.

Very likely it does not have fish, but might have snakes and the occasional alligator.

justinlink··on Google Maps shows sunken car where missing man’s body was found
it was a construction site during the time of the accident.

Tire tracks in grass (if he tried to stop at all) wouldn't be as out of place.

justinlink··on One week of empathy training
I believe these have existed for years in the US too. I had a deaf friend in high school and she could call me using a service where they received typed messages from her. It was 20 years ago so I don't remember exactly how it worked on her end but I remember receiving those calls each time from a different voice.
justinlink··on Democrats to push to reinstate repealed 'net neutrality' rules
It's a reference to something Nancy Pelosi said when passing Obamacare.

"We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it”.

justinlink··on Netflix and Alphabet will need to become ISPs, fast

justinlink··on America is moving toward becoming a better version of itself
You are correct. If you switch up the statement:

Then she goes into talking about her daughter who moved back in. Disabled. And when they went to the Social Security office and Welfare office, "those white people always seem to get it". She went off on a soliloquy about 'us poor black and brown people'.

Nobody would consider that statement racist.

justinlink··on Ask HN: Is Comcast having internet problems?
Lot of packet loss. Pennsylvania Comcast Business Class.

Twitter has a lot of people complaining all over the country when searching the tag comcast.

justinlink··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Thanks - your response clears part of that. Our Boston customer was feeling it way before we did and appears much worse for them.
justinlink··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
We're having issues with packet loss between S3 and EC2 (US-EAST) this morning for at least the last hour or so.

It might be someone else in the pipe between our office (pennsylvania, comcast ISP) and AWS because I've only had one customer (Boston) report any problems so far.

justinlink··on Comcast accused of cutting competitor’s wires to put it out of business
Last year a neighbor had a comcast tech who identified a noisy signal somewhere on our block. He proceeded to disconnect every other house on the block and then left.

He never told anyone at Comcast or the other houses. Took hours of battling with phone support and a two day wait to have another tech who came out and identified the problem. He said they do this often to get into houses to find problems but he's supposed to put a note on each door and put a note on our accounts. Whoops.

justinlink··on Association Between Cesarean Birth and Risk of Obesity
Actually, having a c-section would be worse for "career" focused mothers.

Sure, you get to schedule your due date, but you are having a surgery. It takes longer to recover from a c-section then a natural birth. There is driving and lifting restrictions for weeks. FMLA leave is usually extended for those with c-sections by a few weeks.

And as for scheduling, you can define a maximum date, but the baby can still come early. Just because I'm schedule to have a c-section on September 1st, doesn't mean I can't go into labor in August 15th.

justinlink··on Ask HN: I'm considering trying a 4-day work week. How has it worked out for you?
I've tried a few things:

For the first year after my first daughter was born I "worked from home" on Wednesdays so I could stay home with her. Working from home consisted of doing a lot of extra work Tuesday and Thursday and being available by chat/email on Wednesdays. It worked okay, but I felt constantly stressed not knowing what would possibly come up in the office and if I would be able to handle it plus watch my daughter.

After my second daughter was born I spent a year working 12 - 8 so I could watch the children in the morning and they could have their mother in the evening. I didn't see my wife much, but this was a good year with the children. I enjoyed seeing them every morning and having that time. Plus I was able to run some of the regular errands you speak of...

Now I'm on to my third daughter and I'm not sure what I'll do when my wife's maternity leave is over. I am considering going in to the office very early while my wife is on leave so I can be home earlier in the evening.

I often feel that sometimes I'm wasting my time with the 40-hour work week. I could probably accomplish the same in less hours each week but I like my job and we're a small company so we need someone each day.

In a perfect world, I'd work an extra two hours each day early in the morning and take Friday's off. But that wouldn't work with getting the kids to school now (first daughter is now 5yo) and again my employer needs me everyday.

I wish there was a solution.

justinlink··on Question about CS education in high schools
My HS (1998 - 2001) offered one half semester computer science course taught by the AP math teacher. It was using Pascal. I believe 1999 was the first time it was offered.

I don't remember much of the course, I believe it just covered keywords, syntax and control structures. Most of the projects could be completed within minutes for some students.

The school also had mandatory club period that met once a month, so they had a web development club. The club was tasked with developing (html only) the school's website.

Checking the website of the school today, seems like it's still just that one course but now in C++.

This was a rural high school in Pennsylvania.

justinlink··on Apple Confirms Its $3 Billion Deal for Beats Electronics
This could have a mobile angle too. The HTC One was branded with Beats speakers and headphones.

Maybe they'll do an iphone with "Beats Audio" rather than wait for another Android phone to have partnered with Beats.

justinlink··on Microsoft Azure: Cutting prices on compute and storage
I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't drastically reduce the price of their Windows instances.

Microsoft is matching all of AWS prices, which means the Windows servers are more expensive than the Linux servers. Why not set your Windows server prices as the same as your Linux servers since you don't have to pay the licensing to yourself. This would make azure the easy choice for those running Windows servers.

Maybe I'm missing some anti-competition law here or something, but it sounds funny that Microsoft is price matching Amazon's prices on Microsoft Windows Servers.

justinlink··on Judge Wright issues Prenda Law order
They already argued he was biased, and lost.

Source: http://ia601508.us.archive.org/28/items/gov.uscourts.cacd.54...

As for appeal, he set the monetary awards at a figure just below the cost of a successfully appeal. So they may appeal, but they will not reap any benefits.

They can't appeal the fact that he's going to report them to the IRS CID and the feds.

justinlink··on Judge Wright issues Prenda Law order
FYI, Prenda already argued that the Judge was biased in this case. The issue went before another judge, and was denied.

justinlink··on Judge Wright issues Prenda Law order
It's not uncommon, for example here's a recent double-entendre ruling about a strip club:

http://www.woai.com/media/lib/12/5/9/5/59511ba8-415b-4b2e-a7...

The lawyers out there speculated he did it as yet another smack down to Prenda law. This will always be known in law circles as the "Star Trek Order". It'll be more widely read, and the shame will always follow them.

His findings of law are correct, a little toying with them outside of his findings is quite enjoyable.
